With all the attention on the internet recently, there is another huge source of information that has been overlooked. The amount of information that can be shared from this thing is staggering. Like the internet, while it can be used for tremendous good such as shiurim, learning from seforim you’ve never used before, and more, it also has the potential for tremendous bad. Immorality, causing pain to others, some would even go so far as to say it can potentially cause murder.

Like the internet, this source is available to almost everyone. Information is accessible at lightning-fast speeds.

So why am I bringing this up? Because people need to filter it! While there are a few who are extremely careful with this, the vast majority are not. They themselves don’t realize the harm they’ve done until it’s too late. We need filters!

So, you’re suggesting that the Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation set up a full website?

    This appears to be letzanus.

DaasYochid: No, but maybe we should have an asifa on filtering our own mouths! I’m sure there are far more people who speak Lashon Hara than there are those using the internet inappropriately!

I think we need to raise millions of dollars to have another asifa!

    Ungefeift,

In our communities there are many many asifas for shmeriars halshon and many classes and initiatives.

Perhaps you are referring to the same people who made leitzonus from the internet asifa are the same who make letzonus of all the established shmiras haloshon asifas and initiatives.

No. I don’t know of anyone using the mouth for Lashon Hara. YOU’RE speaking lashon hara on K’lal Yisroel (actually motzei shem ra). As the gemara (somewhere, I’m told) retorts ??? ????? ?????? (for those that cannot read this Hebrew – ‘hakol blashon hara salka da’atach?!?) No one speaks Lashon Hara!

    This appears to be letzanus.

No, it appears to be a sincere plea to be careful in shmiras halashon.

    Feif,

Every summer, the CCHF makes a whole bunch of mini-asifos on Tisha B’av. (My family, in our small way, helps in the sponsorship and presentation of the videos in one particular venue.)

B”H, I think they’ve done a great job in raising awareness of the issue.

I am m’kanei those who have done so much to raise the awareness of both shmiras halashon and shmiras haeinayim. It’s still up to each individual to fight his yetzer horah, but their z’chus is immense.

chulent- its not letzanus! its the truth! people should watch what they say and type! end of discussion! I’m sure Feif was just showing that we have a lot of other issue that need to be discussed first- if everyone would be working on their tznuis and shmiras ha lashon I think we wouldnt have much of an internet issue at all because everyone would choose on their OWN to filter etc. so by fixing the first 2 the asifa would have been pointless- (not saying that it was!) when you have a leak do you just patch up the ceiling or do you go find the root of the leak and fix it? the asifa was just a patch up- we now have to find our root!

    Syag,

I wasn’t looking for kudos, just to make a point that highlighting the importance of one topic (internet filters) is in no way an indication that another topic (loshon hora) is somehow unimportant.

That was exactly how I understood it. And I wanted to second your message. They gave us table plaques for our bar mitzvah tables asking people to guard their tongues. They are a wonderful organization.

I would but I am really busy now and im trying to layoff the posting- so it would get neglected- that’s why I mentioned the idea- so that maybe someone else will do it- and take initiative!

Feif: CCHF has smaller events every tisha b’av and at other times. They have the potential work a lot better than one major big-tent asifa, IMO because more time, effort, and money are spent on content than on the venue and packing as many people as possible into one place. I’ve noticed that they actually work, at least for a few weeks after. Maybe we should fund them more often.

    Chulent: Grow up.
