September 30, 2016 8:37 pm at 8:37 pm #1186216golferParticipantYou can overdose by taking large quantities of Vitamin D.
Please speak to your MD before taking any vitamins, supplements or medications, even if you can buy them at your local supermarket with no prescription.
I know you say your doctor suggested you can’t take too much vitamin D.
I respectfully beg to differ and suggest people speak to their own doctor.
(Not to the nice lady behind the counter at your local health food place.)
September 30, 2016 9:38 pm at 9:38 pm #1186217SparklyMembergolfer – if you have too much vitamin d then you can get too much melanin which is a pigment in your skin that makes your skin darker and it can damage the dna of your keratinocytes and if your out in the sun for long enough you can get cancer from the vitamin d and that can eventually kill you off chasvichalilla.
October 1, 2016 6:42 pm at 6:42 pm #1186218WinnieThePoohParticipantIt is true that many people, especially tznius women with little sun exposure, are Vitamin D deficient, and that taking vitamin D supplements can help may issues. My Dr advised me to take supplements when I complained about being tired and getting headaches. But you can overdose on vitamin D, since it is not water soluble it can build up in your body and is not excreted.
some quick googling about vitamin D:
from the mayo clinic: “The main consequence of vitamin D toxicity is a buildup of calcium in your blood (hypercalcemia), which can cause poor appetite, nausea and vomiting. Weakness, frequent urination and kidney problems also may occur….taking 50,000 international units (IU) a day of vitamin D for several months has been shown to cause toxicity. This level is many times higher than the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for most adults of 600 IU of vitamin D a day.”
WebMD says that current recommendations are that up to 4,000 IU/day are safe, but some studies suggest that up to 10,000 per day are still safe for a healthy adult. But there is also no proof that megadoses provide any health benefit.
Sparkly, as far as I know, vitamin D does not cause cancer- in fact some studies say that it protects against some kinds of cancer. It is also necessary for keratinocyte development. Exposure to sunlight (UV) can do 2 things- it is a natural source that allows the body to produce vitamin D, which is good, but UV radiation can also damage DNA in skin cells (e.g. melanocytes) thereby causing cancer (melanoma), which is why people prefer to get their needed vitamin D from supplements rather than sun exposure. The vitamin D does not cause the cancer, the UV does. melanin actually absorbs the UV rays; which is why darker people need more UV exposure to make enough vitamin D than fair people, but on the flip side, fairer people are more prone to skin cancer.

October 2, 2016 1:49 am at 1:49 am #1186220👑RebYidd23ParticipantVitamin D toxicity is far rarer than deficiency.
October 2, 2016 3:02 am at 3:02 am #1186221WinnieThePoohParticipantSparkly, I don’t claim to be an expert in physiology or medicine, but I don’t need an A&P textbook in front of me to know that UV radiation causes skin cancer. and that melanin protects from UV.

October 4, 2016 10:49 pm at 10:49 pm #1186226Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantI have spoken to two doctors about the Vitamin D deficiency issue and they both told me that it is a very controversial issue in the medical field. One of them was a doctor (my doctor at the time) who herself was VERY into this idea that Frum people (men as well as women, since Frum men also tend to cover themselves pretty thoroughly) are lacking Vitamin D, but she herself acknowledged that it was a controversial position and that most of her colleagues disagree with her.
The other doctor I spoke to explained the reason why a lot of people nowadays are getting blood tests results that claim they are deficient in Vitamin D. He said that it’s because they have increased the amount that they decided that people need, and there was not necessarily a good reason for this. When I asked him about this idea that Frum people don’t get enough Vitamin D, he also thought that was ridiculous, and he said that you can get enough Vitamin D just by standing at the busstop for 15 minutes on your way to Kollel.
The interesting thing is that the first doctor is herself Frum and the second one isn’t. I know this isn’t a complete proof, but I personally find it hard to believe that Hashem would create a world in which it is necessary to violate Halacha in order to get the Vitamin D we need. That is why I am skeptical about the whole thing.
October 4, 2016 10:51 pm at 10:51 pm #1186227Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantPringles, how are you doing? I thought about you a lot on Rosh Hashana. Did you follow any of the ideas anyone gave here? Has the situation changed at all? I hope you had a good Yomtov and that you have a Gmar Chasima Tova!
Please let us know how you are doing.
October 5, 2016 12:51 am at 12:51 am #1186228SparklyMemberlilmod ulelamaid – me too i hope that he /she is okay as long as i know since it was a similar person of what this pringles was saying maybe he is G-d forbid the guy that im feeling terrible for.
October 5, 2016 1:25 am at 1:25 am #1186229Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantSparkly – I thought you knew the guy? Wouldn’t you be able to tell if they sounded the same? I think Pringles is a girl, anyhow.
October 5, 2016 2:00 am at 2:00 am #1186230SparklyMemberlilmod ulelamaid – i did obviously but i didnt know that pringles was a girl.
October 5, 2016 2:38 am at 2:38 am #1186231Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantSparkly, I don’t know for sure that Pringles is a girl, but that was my impression. In any case, from this thread, we know that we are talking about someone who is a teenager, works at least 8 hours a day, lives somewhere where that is normal, and has younger siblings. So if none of those fits the guy you are talking about, he/she can’t be him. In any case, I really don’t think it’s him, and I don’t think you have to worry about that.
October 9, 2016 4:04 am at 4:04 am #1186233SparklyMemberlilmod ulelamaid – i still havent gotten fully over this but im working on it.
October 10, 2016 10:36 am at 10:36 am #1186234Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantSparkly – can you just call a therapist already???
October 10, 2016 6:53 pm at 6:53 pm #1186235Abba_SParticipantIf you are feeling sad try eating ice cream and listening to music these things usually make you happy. Try to speak to a Rabbi or someone you trust in your community, there is something that is causing you to feel this way find it and remove it and you will be happy. Also try to think about times when you were happy as opposed to dwelling on sad times.
October 11, 2016 2:20 am at 2:20 am #1186236SparklyMemberlilmod ulelamaid – im too busy with college to bother with this. ill just allow it to stay within me until chanukah and my class ends.
October 11, 2016 2:20 am at 2:20 am #1186237SparklyMemberAbba_S – read my posts and you will find the obvious reason why im depressed and even more so now.
October 11, 2016 6:44 am at 6:44 am #1186238Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantWhy more so now Sparkly? Did something else happen?
October 11, 2016 6:25 pm at 6:25 pm #1186239SparklyMemberlilmod ulelamaid – i already told you. but b’h i am happy to say that their are other frum girls that i met at school the other day and the sisters came back so there back at school now too b’h.
October 12, 2016 10:58 pm at 10:58 pm #1186240Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantSparkly – that’s good. I davened for you on Yom Kippur. I hope that you have a really good sweet near year!
October 13, 2016 3:11 am at 3:11 am #1186241SparklyMemberlilmod ulelamaid – you too. i davened for myself as well (lol).
October 13, 2016 8:03 pm at 8:03 pm #1186242Abba_SParticipantSparkly- “Abba_S – read my posts and you will find the obvious reason why im depressed and even more so now.” The advise was for Pringles, I was unaware that you were depressed. I am sorry I offended you. I don’t read every post on this thread so could you tell me when you posted so I could find it. Are you saying that you are eating ice cream and listening to music and it still doesn’t cheer you up? You know King Saul had David, before he became king, play the harp when he was depressed and it helped so music does cure depression. If you are still depressed maybe it’s the type of music you are listening to needs to be changed to a more happier beat. Wishing everybody a Happy & Joyous New Year and may all your depressing thoughts melt away as soon as they occur.
