So I takes my car in for an inspection.
No, not to my regular palestinian mechanic. To some dank looking gas station 10 miles away.
Because they’re open at night, and who in blazes has time during the day to take your car in for an inspection.
So they fail me. Obviously.
So I pay them and leave.
And a month later get a chance to take my car to my palestinian early in the morning.
And I tell them what happened.
And he says of course I was being ripped off.
But that I really do need new back tires.
And of course I already knew I needed new back tires.
But that I don’t need a new windshield and a new bumper.
So first I thought I would take my car and go to sears and buy the tires I want for the price I want and bring it back and pass.
But then I realized, that’s not how extortion works. If I want to pass, I need to buy the tires from my guy. That’s how the game works.
So I did. And I bought coffee from a donut shop and drank it and did daf yomi meanstwhile.

December 23, 2013 12:33 am at 12:33 am #995896popa_bar_abbaParticipantI don’t know if you do everywhere, but in Wilson county you do.
December 23, 2013 12:43 am at 12:43 am #995897☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThese things usually go by state, so if you have to in Wilson County, then the entire North Carolina, Texas, Louisiana, and Tennessee require it (Wilson County is apparently so large that it occupies at least four states).
December 23, 2013 5:17 pm at 5:17 pm #995899popa_bar_abbaParticipantCould be. But I only know about wilson county in tennessee.
So, should I make a credit card claim against the first one?
December 23, 2013 5:28 pm at 5:28 pm #995900apushatayidParticipantSure. And while your at it, blame him for messing up your learning that days daf.
December 23, 2013 6:03 pm at 6:03 pm #995901☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI’m surprised they took a credit card. I once broke down in yohoopitzville and the ripoff mechanic wouldn’t take my credit card because he knew he was charging way too much (I was stuck early on a Sunday morning). He drove me to an ATM to get cash.

December 26, 2013 11:20 pm at 11:20 pm #995903JacobmaxMemberI haven’t bought new tires since 1992. I buy used tires. They cost $30 each installed, have plenty of tread, and they last just as long (with 20 years of experience). There is no reason to pay retail. Safety is a non-issue in this case (even if the used tire had a flat that was patched, those patches last the lifetime of the tire). If you’re a regular at your mechanic he shouldn’t expect any rewards for passing your vehicle over minor issues. Most mechanics will look the other way over minor failures for regulars.
December 27, 2013 12:17 am at 12:17 am #995904squeakParticipantUsed tires don’t match my ferragamo belt. Next youll tell us to buy only used lambos. No thanks.
December 27, 2013 12:28 am at 12:28 am #995905popa_bar_abbaParticipantJacob,
That’s because they are dishonest. But dishonest mechanics cost way more in the long run.
I have an honest mechanic, and he won’t overlook anything unless you pay him for new tires.
