Hello ,
I wish to exercise in my home using videos.
There are no men only gyms where I live and it’s getting too cold for me to exercise outside.
Does anybody know of a workout video (online or dvd’s) that doesn’t show any women.
This would be a big help ,
Thank you kol tuv!November 6, 2017 8:40 pm at 8:40 pm #1397126GadolhadorahParticipantNot sure why a “men only” gym is a real issue. In today’s world, you will not see a woman dressed much differently in a gym than you probably see multiple times a day on the street or in the park on a warm summer day (in fact, possibly worse on the street than in the gym). Keeping yourself healthy is more important than possibly someone on the treadmill not being dressed tziniudik. There are plenty of exercise videos on line with men only…we cannot post web links here but just google “men’s fitness” videos and you will get plenty of options. Much hatzlacha with your fitness efforts.
November 6, 2017 8:43 pm at 8:43 pm #1397181☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantNot sure why a “men only” gym is a real issue.
Because of shmiras einayim.
You seem to be oblivious to how the yetzer hora works.
November 6, 2017 9:21 pm at 9:21 pm #1397184GadolhadorahParticipantMy point was simple and I think you know it (especially if you live in BP, Willy or any other major urban area….the way women dress on the street may not be much different than the gym….perhaps your one of the ehrliche yiddne who are like those big tzadikim that YWN ran the story about who wear some sort of bag over their heads when flying on commercial airlines. If you believe that the women at your local gym are dressing especially provactively, than I agree with you 100 percent but a my gym, most of the women are wearing oversized sweats and loose baggy tops that do not challenge the yetzer hora.
November 6, 2017 9:22 pm at 9:22 pm #1397185LightbriteParticipantAjs4: The gym is not the same as being on the street.
At the gym, there is the possibility of sharing fitness equipment before and after women. Working out beside them. Having conversations, or having women speak to him.
I used to work at a gym, and my co-workers had a lot of stories.
November 6, 2017 9:22 pm at 9:22 pm #1397186LightbriteParticipantOOoops sorry ajs4!
My comment wasn’t for you, but for Gadolhadorah.
November 6, 2017 9:22 pm at 9:22 pm #1397187LightbriteParticipantajs4, I commend you!!!
And yes it makes sense for ajs4 to ask about men-only fitness videos because often a male trainer’s video will still have women in the background.
Thank you for asking us here for help 🙂
Sending you blessings… and hopefully someone here will help with answers
November 6, 2017 9:25 pm at 9:25 pm #1397195☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantMy point was simple and I think you know it
So was mine, and so do you.
November 6, 2017 9:48 pm at 9:48 pm #1397202LKParticipantThere is a DVD called FitYid that is frum men doing workouts.
November 6, 2017 10:22 pm at 10:22 pm #1397210yehudayonaParticipantFrum men doing workouts? Where did they find them?
November 6, 2017 10:40 pm at 10:40 pm #1397221DovidBTParticipant“Frum men doing workouts? Where did they find them?”
I found a description of the FitYid DVD that says all the performers are certified Personal Trainers.
November 7, 2017 8:08 am at 8:08 am #1397298TheGoqParticipantYes one can find immodest clothing out in the street but unlike the gym the person wearing them is not in constant movement and gyrating every which way, I concur with DY.
November 7, 2017 8:33 am at 8:33 am #1397304akupermaParticipantActually most women dress much better on the street than in a gym. If you believe otherwise, perhaps you should worry that when you go “outside” you are hading to places where people are especially disreputable.
It would be good if a frum entrepreneur could make a go of single gender gyms, and related videos. Books are less of a problem.
I’m not sure if the rules on underdressed females apply if the pictures show them not only without clothes, but also without skin (in some exercise books this is done to illustrate the muscles).
November 7, 2017 9:45 am at 9:45 am #1397333big dealParticipantAjs4 has a very valid point. You need to focus on the trainer and specific muscle groups to ensure exercise is being done properly. You just need to look where your going when walking on the street and can ignore everything else around you.
November 7, 2017 11:14 am at 11:14 am #1397340zahavasdadParticipantWalking is the best exercise and you can do it on the street without joining any GYM’s
November 7, 2017 11:47 am at 11:47 am #1397448akupermaParticipantWalking is very low intensity. Several forms of aerobic exercise are better (swiming, which requires special facilities – as well as biking and running). Strength training is important, and that can best be done with special equipment.
November 7, 2017 11:58 am at 11:58 am #1397459MenoParticipantJust walk around the block twice
November 7, 2017 12:07 pm at 12:07 pm #1397471GadolhadorahParticipantJust like we have a chavrusah for learning, in some cases it makes sense to have a similar chavrussah for fitness and exercise. Not only will it provide really important incentives to exercise on a regular basis, running or biking with your friends may give you needed chizuk to pursue your fitness goals and share ideas/suggestions on how you might exercise more efficiently. Several of you might also be able to afford (as a group) to hire a trainer one day a week or something like that. Exercising by yourself is good for some men and women but “group” efforts are more likely to keep you committed to your “exercise chevrah” for a longer term.
November 7, 2017 2:42 pm at 2:42 pm #1397718ajs4ParticipantThank you everyone for your help.
LK- I checked out fit yid and it looks great, I am going to try it. Thanks again kol tuv.
November 7, 2017 5:14 pm at 5:14 pm #1398240zahavasdadParticipantYou need to walk more than just around the block twice, you need to walk for at least 30 mins a day
November 7, 2017 9:26 pm at 9:26 pm #1398784Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantMost people I know are very careful about where they walk. Personally, I rarely see anyone dressed untzniusly on the street for that reason.
And most men and boys I know walk with their heads down, or at least they put them down when they see a female approaching.
November 8, 2017 3:39 pm at 3:39 pm #1399211Lilmod UlelamaidParticipant“Keeping yourself healthy is more important than possibly someone on the treadmill not being dressed tziniudik”
Surprised that DY (and anyone else for that matter) didn’t comment on this line.
November 8, 2017 4:39 pm at 4:39 pm #1399233JosephParticipantLilmod, the person who said that isn’t frum so it isn’t surprising enough to be commented on.
November 8, 2017 4:57 pm at 4:57 pm #1399271zahavasdadParticipantLU
I dont know about where you are located, but here in NYC area, most people are not dressed untzniut outside at this time of year, they would freeze. Its cold outside and its going to get colder
November 8, 2017 5:17 pm at 5:17 pm #1399277Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantZD – I’m not sure what your point is. Can you explain?
November 8, 2017 5:25 pm at 5:25 pm #1399278Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantJoseph – I don’t think that was an appropriate (or fair) response.
It’s also irrelevant. You can comment on someone’s post even if it’s not surprising, and even when the person really isn’t Frum.
November 8, 2017 5:25 pm at 5:25 pm #1399286DovidBTParticipantThe OP’s interest seems to be in group exercise, i.e. an aerobics class.
In a mixed gender aerobics class at a gym, there will almost certainly be women in one’s field of view, so you’ll be staring at them for the duration of the class. Wouldn’t this be an issue for a man regardless of how they’re dressed?
November 8, 2017 7:06 pm at 7:06 pm #1399290Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantDovidBT – true. For that matter, the only reason that I know that most men and boys where I live look down when they see a female approaching is because that’s what they do when I’m there, and I think I’m pretty tznius.
November 8, 2017 7:58 pm at 7:58 pm #1399320☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantSurprised that DY (and anyone else for that matter) didn’t comment on this line.
It didn’t strike me. Maybe because she didn’t say “Keeping yourself healthy is more important than looking at someone on the treadmill not dressed tziniudik”.
November 8, 2017 7:58 pm at 7:58 pm #1399323☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantZD – I’m not sure what your point is. Can you explain?
I think he was pointing out another way in which a gym is worse than the street.
November 8, 2017 8:48 pm at 8:48 pm #1399339Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantDY – I had missed that, but anyhow:
1. that would actually be worse, and
2. you know what she meant.November 8, 2017 8:49 pm at 8:49 pm #1399340Lilmod UlelamaidParticipant“ZD – I’m not sure what your point is. Can you explain?”
“I think he was pointing out another way in which a gym is worse than the street.”
Oh. I thought he was arguing with me somehow, but I didn’t get how. But your explanation makes sense. Thanks.
Is that what you meant, ZD?
November 8, 2017 9:12 pm at 9:12 pm #1399352☕ DaasYochid ☕Participant1. That’s the point
2. Cute, but I don’t think she meant it’s okay to look, I think she meant it’s okay to put yourself in that position but just control yourself, which I already disagreed with.November 8, 2017 9:41 pm at 9:41 pm #1399354🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantAnd I thought she meant that it’s okay to put yourself in that position because your health is more important – and an implication that there is nothing wrong with it because we have developed ourselves so efficiently that many of the halachos barely even apply to us anymore. r”l
November 8, 2017 9:41 pm at 9:41 pm #1399357zahavasdadParticipantYou seemed to imply the street is untiznus, but this time of year with everyone wearing jackets and coats, its not really an issue (If there is someone dressed untznius, its an oddity and not regular)
November 9, 2017 5:15 pm at 5:15 pm #1400715Lilmod UlelamaidParticipant“And I thought she meant that it’s okay to put yourself in that position because your health is more important – and an implication that there is nothing wrong with it because we have developed ourselves so efficiently that many of the halachos barely even apply to us anymore. r”l”
Precisely my point. Thank you, SYAG.
She was determining halacha based on her own feelings, so that’s why I would have expected you to say something, DY. And in this case, I would actually have agreed with you, because in this case, that is really what is happening.
November 9, 2017 5:15 pm at 5:15 pm #1400717Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantps: While it is theoretically possible that a specific person in a very specific circumstance MIGHT be given a heter (and I don’t even know if that is possible or not – I’m just saying MAYBE- like if someone is going to die if he doesn’t exercise, and there is no other option but a mixed gym, and he is blind so shmiras ha’ainayim doesn’t apply to him, MAYBE a Poseik would matir it for him), but the issue here, IMHO, is that she seemed to be making a very definite halachic statement based on an assumption.
November 9, 2017 5:15 pm at 5:15 pm #1400718Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantI just looked back at her sentence, and it is clear from the lashon that she meant it the way I understood it. She wrote “than looking at someone”, so she was saying that it’s okay to look.
November 9, 2017 5:15 pm at 5:15 pm #1400721👑RebYidd23ParticipantThis whole thread is an ad.
November 9, 2017 5:16 pm at 5:16 pm #1400724JosephParticipantLilmod, it is his cumulative history of comments here that leads me to so categorize him, not merely this comment in isolation. That history of dismissing and disagreeing with Torah law makes that categorization abundantly clear.
November 9, 2017 6:17 pm at 6:17 pm #1400757Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantJoseph – I understood that that was where this was coming from, but I still think it’s inappropriate and unhelpful.
Also, why do you write “him”? Granted, her name is Gadolhadorah which implies that he’s male, but I always thought she was a girl.November 9, 2017 7:33 pm at 7:33 pm #1400762Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantRY – sorry, but I don’t own a men’s gym, nor do I have any plans of doing so at any point in either this life or any future lives.
ZD – I didn’t say that the street is necessarily untznius. My point was that even if the street is untznius, it’s not as bad as a gym. But if you’re right and it’s not untznius at all, that further proves my point.
Oh and by the way, I just passed two women wearing leggings outside.
November 9, 2017 7:33 pm at 7:33 pm #1400794JosephParticipantI’m quite sure it’s a him.
November 9, 2017 8:12 pm at 8:12 pm #1400828☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantShe wrote “than looking at someone”
No she didn’t.
She did, however, subsequently write,” If you believe that the women at your local gym are dressing especially provactively, than I agree with you 100 percent but a my gym, most of the women are wearing oversized sweats and loose baggy tops that do not challenge the yetzer hora.”
November 10, 2017 3:13 pm at 3:13 pm #1401142👑RebYidd23ParticipantLilmod, ajs4 and LK seem not to have posted except on this thread.
November 12, 2017 5:12 pm at 5:12 pm #1401748Lilmod UlelamaidParticipant”She wrote “than looking at someone”
”No she didn’t.”
You’re right – that was a mistake.
”She did, however, subsequently write,” If you believe that the women at your local gym are dressing especially provactively, than I agree with you 100 percent but a my gym, most of the women are wearing oversized sweats and loose baggy tops that do not challenge the yetzer hora.”
The original sentence is still a problem. (This sentence is also a problem, but that’s a separate issue).
November 12, 2017 5:12 pm at 5:12 pm #1401749Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantRY – I’m trying to limit my usage.
December 16, 2017 11:59 pm at 11:59 pm #1428225Non PoliticalParticipantSorry this Is a bit late but this subject is close to my heart.
For under $700.00 (one time cost) you can get a Oly barbell, iron plates, and a squat rack. Get a competent Strength coach to teach you how to perform the basic barbell lifts safely and put together a simple program built around progressing the basic lifts.
Walk on your non lifting days
No gym required. In fact the above is more effective for your health then most anything else you can do in a gym. Not to mention most efficient from a time management point of you.
December 17, 2017 12:34 am at 12:34 am #1428237LightbriteParticipantJust remembered something…
When I was a kid, I had a Disney workout audio tape… I don’t remember who was speaking… maybe Mickey Mouse.
Anyway, it was a character’s voice telling me what to do with music.
I’m wondering if there is an adult fitness audio track that you can follow for a workout.
Okay… it is not a video, but I wanted to put this idea of having a male audio-recorded fitness routine out there for you as a kosher option.
December 17, 2017 10:11 am at 10:11 am #1428334Non PoliticalParticipantExercise tapes, live aerobics style classes, training on cardio equipment, etc are largly a waste of time. Yes, if you are totally unfit you will see improvement but you could get the same from a consistent walking program. Long term the above cardio based programs will make you weaker and hungrier. Most people use them as a misguided way of purging calories.
