Anyone who doesn’t wear yak tracks in this snow is an idiot. Anyone who does won’t slip. So only put out salt if you care about idiots.

“Yaktrax” is a brand of “ice-traction devices.”

This is not a joke! Each and every landlord is MECHUYIV to put salt outside their homes to melt the ice!

Time to have the yearly fun… OK, here goes

“MECHUYIV”?!? It’s a nice gesture, maybe one is instructed to by NYC codes, but MECHUYIV? Highly doubt it. Every one is MECHUYIV to watch how he/ she is walking. If it’s slippery and one will or is likely to take a slip, then it’s OSSUR, forbidden, to step outside. ????? ????? ???????. However, the landlord did not put the snow or ice there, and does not own the sidewalk, so it’s not his “bor” and he’s not MECHUYIV for any damages incurred by someone else’s negligence to watch his / her step.

Again, I’m not a landlord, and I do, as a kind gesture, shovel the snow around (for exercise!), but Torah law does not compel one to shovel. NYC law does, and I would suppose one may imply the ???? ??????? on this (open to debate).

Okay so here’s your big chance!!!! Today it warmed up a little in New York, so whoever was not KIND enough to remove their ice , DO IT NOW! Before the next storm hits…..

Froggie, with all due respect, what exactly was the purpose of that? Last time I checked, being a mentch (eg, an able-bodied person shoveling or salting snow) was part of the rulebook of being frum. Has something changed? Unfortunately, the defense of a word (admittedly, an important one) has left me rather unimpressed…

Salt becomes largely ineffective at melting ice once temperatures drop below 20 degrees. At those temperatures, sand is a better bet to provide some traction for walkers and vehicles, but it won’t make things perfect.

Kapusta, I’m just responding that there’s no reason, al pi din Torah, to shovel snow. It’s not a hezek caused by the landowner, and he doesn’t own the property. No “chiyuv” as stated above. Shoveling one’s own “legal” property (that he really doesn’t own) has no basis in Halachah, nor is it “being a mentch”.

Nothing at all to do with being a mentch. Being a mentch would mean to shovel your neighbor’s property too. Shovel the street, so cars would have an easier time.

And btw most people remember the part of “being a mentch is part of the rulebook of being frum. They tend to forget that being frum is also part of the rulebook.

I suggest you read my post above more thoroughly. I did not in the least imply one not to do it. Read again.
