for the sake of klal i am in forming everybody that from now on there will be a DOT vehicle standing on coney island ave between locust ave and ave L in ftront of mesivta chaim berlin equipped with a camera taking pictures of speeding vehicles going over 35 mph and fining them. we have to put a stop to this.
April 15, 2015 2:33 am at 2:33 am #1072654oomisParticipantYou can easily put a stop to it. Stop speeding. No-brainer.
April 15, 2015 3:45 am at 3:45 am #1072655golferParticipantTrue, oomis.
No-brainer.
But you’d probably be surprised how many brainless people out there wouldn’t have even a fleeting notion of any idea involving easing up on the gas pedal.
We better stop those anti-semites at the DOT trying to stop us from flying down Coney Island Avenue faster than a speeding tow truck on a rain-slicked highway.

April 15, 2015 3:11 pm at 3:11 pm #1072658Yayin Yashan B’Kli ChadashParticipant35 mph isn’t quite speeding like a meshugana. And people shouldn’t be walking in middle of the street. 25 mph is excessively slow. Almost every city in America has local speed limits around 35 mph. So unless you’re calling them all “speeding tow trucks on a rain slicked highway” (Can you imagine someone going so fast on a highway? 35 whole miles per hour?!?!?), calm down the rhetoric.
April 15, 2015 4:38 pm at 4:38 pm #1072659takahmamashParticipantBetter you should NOT inform people about the speed trap; let the fools that insist on speeding get caught. Maybe they’ll learn not to speed.

35 mph isn’t quite speeding like a meshugana.
The posted speed limit is 35mph, according to the OP. Therefore, to be speeding, a car would have to be exceeding 35mph. Usually ticketing is triggered once a vehicle is going 5-10mph over the limit, so we are talking about 40-45mph minimum on a crowded urban thoroughfare.
April 15, 2015 9:56 pm at 9:56 pm #1072661SayIDidIt™ParticipantKol Mevaser is now reporting a person hit by a car on Coney Island and Ave M. Maybe there really is a need for a cop there!

April 16, 2015 1:30 am at 1:30 am #1072665JosephParticipantNYC lowered the speed limit a few months ago from 30 to the current 25.
April 16, 2015 3:09 am at 3:09 am #1072666screwdriverdelightParticipantThis reminds me of a story that happened with the bachurim of Yeshiva R’ Chayyim Berlin. They didn’t like one of the staff there and they somehow had a hydrant. So every day they would find his car and put the hydrant next to it and wait for a cop to come. Once he got the ticket, they would take the hydrant away.
Honestly, as was mentioned a few times, a speed limit of 35 mph on a side street isn’t so unreasonable. Getting a ticket for going above that is unreasonable. If it’s a big street, the speed limit is unreasonable.
Avrom in MD-you misread the OP. He said you get a ticket for going above, not that that’s what the limit is.
They make things to put on your license plates that reflect the light so a camera can’t catch it. Or you could try blocking the DOT car with a dumpster or something.
I always wonder why no politician runs on the platform of minimizing traffic cops and tickets.
April 16, 2015 4:50 am at 4:50 am #1072667JosephParticipantThe default NYC speed limit is 25. The police tend to ticket only when going at least 10 over the speed limit.
April 16, 2015 5:34 am at 5:34 am #1072668–ParticipantAlmost every city in America has local speed limits around 35 mph.
This is no longer the case, The larger cities have mostly lowered their default speed limits to 30 and some (like NYC) to 25.

Are you contending that it is unreasonable to enforce speed limits?

For that sentence to make any sense, the speed limit would have to be 35mph. I do not believe I misread anything.

Because the revenue from tickets helps pay for that office holders staff and perks.

Going 36 mph on a Brooklyn street is very unticketable. A speed limit underneath that is a great suggestion, but it most certainly shouldn’t be enforced. Now, if someone’s going 50, there’s what to talk about.

No, for that to make any sense, it would mean that the camera takes pictures of speeding vehicles going over 35 mph and [the city] fining them.

What would be the point of a speed limit that is not enforced? BTW – speed limits on yellow signs are suggestions, but white signs are the law.

I didn’t realize that the OP was already adding 10mph the speed limit to state the ticketing threshold. Still doesn’t make sense to me, but my mistake.
April 17, 2015 4:27 pm at 4:27 pm #1072674ChortkovParticipantAvram in MD – Have you ever driven 170 kmh/100 mph on a highway before? Many people do, quite often. It is probably perfectly manageable. But imagine everyone was driving that fast… It would be a disaster.
Even if the speed limit wouldn’t be enforced, as long as the “hamon am” keep to the speed limit most of the times, the many exceptions don’t matter.

Yekke2-100 mph sounds like way too fast. You sure it’s manageable?
April 17, 2015 5:24 pm at 5:24 pm #1072677Aseh maat ve emor harbehParticipantBetween thirty and forty thousand people die each year in motor vehicle accidents in the United States alone. In terms of loss of human life, that is the equivalent of ten September 11th attacks every year. And that’s not counting those who are seriously injured, or those in other countries. How many of us don’t know someone who was injured or worse in a car accident? The families of auto accident victims suffer no less and are no less innocent than the families of terror victims but they get a lot less attention. A large percentage of these deaths could be prevented if people would drive calmly and obey the law when it comes to speeding, tailgating, drunk driving, and obeying traffic lights.
Would you feel embarrassed to be seen sending a donation check to Hamas? If so, you should be embarrassed to be seen driving aggressively or speeding. That includes driving 36 mph on a Brooklyn street, where there are inevitably many pedestrians, bicyclists, children, stopped cars, etc., and it certainly includes driving 100 mph or even 60 or 70 mph on a New York highway, where onramps are short, there are no shoulders, and visibility is often limited. Just because you think you are a skilled driver doesn’t mean that speeding won’t reduce your ability to avoid a serious accident if something suddenly happens on the road. Even though your intentions may be less evil than a Hamas terrorist, your actions cause just as much damage and you have just as much blood on your hands if you drive that way. Not to mention chillul Hashem if you are ticketed or get into an accident because of such driving.
April 17, 2015 5:30 pm at 5:30 pm #1072678Aseh maat ve emor harbehParticipantAlso, I once asked a rav a sheila about whether breaking the speed limit is a violation of dina d’malchusa. The answer I received was that violating traffic laws that are commonly enforced is a violation of dina d’malchusa. So driving 2 mph over the speed limit would not be a dina d’malchusa problem, but driving 12 mph over the speed limit probably would be.
So those of you who care about following halacha but like to drive over the speed limit would be advised to consult your Rav before doing so.

Usually to suggest a safe speed along a small distance sharp curve, such as a freeway entrance/exit ramp.

April 17, 2015 7:06 pm at 7:06 pm #1072684Avram in MDParticipantscared driver delight,
But to suggest a safe speed along a street has no point?
I think the yellow signs are primarily intended for short distance situations where the ability to enforce is limited and the speed reduction is temporary. It’s different from a straight thoroughfare.
So, if I understand your argument correctly, a “suggested” speed of 25/35mph is appropriate for Coney Island Ave, but ticketing/fining people is inappropriate unless they are really flying? If you feel that there is a reasonable speed that is in excess of the limit, then why would you consider the limit to be a “great suggestion”?
April 17, 2015 7:20 pm at 7:20 pm #1072685screwdriverdelightParticipantIt’s a great way of telling people how the average person/a person not 100% alert should drive down the street, while keeping everyone alive. That does not say that a better driver and/or an extra-alert driver need to adhere to such a suggestion.
April 17, 2015 7:39 pm at 7:39 pm #1072686Avram in MDParticipantscared driver delight,
That does not say that a better driver and/or an extra-alert driver need to adhere to such a suggestion.
So poor or distracted drivers should adhere to the posted speed limit (e.g., 25mph).
Better drivers or drivers who gulped 15 Starbucks can do 35.
How fast can awesome drivers go?
