I’ll tell you what a rabbi told me a little while ago. (don’t remember his example perfectly and i don’t know – maybe he got it from some sefer or something.)

If i tell you not to think of monkeys making gold powder, what do you think of? you probably now have a million different scenarios of what i just described in four words. isn’t that ridiculous? i’m sure you never thought of such a random thing before. so why are you thinking about it? because i just told you not to.

The harder you try to not think of something, the more it’s in your head. you needa put something else in your head to think about.
