All I said was Era of European Jewry was longer than you indicated. You are counting from the time of Rabbeinu Gershom (followed by Rashi). Truthfully, you can go back much earlier to the time Jews moved to Prague and Spain. Correction:- Did you mean to say pre WW1 Gedolim? Because still several people around from WW2 era.
