Studies have shown that 90% of statistics are made up.
September 3, 2009 7:52 pm at 7:52 pm #658833mepalMemberames, he’s a boy. Back off. 😉
September 3, 2009 7:55 pm at 7:55 pm #658834mi keamcha yisroelMembermepal: not including novels. even novels are okay!
ames: who said i read so much. I KNOW STASTISTICS.
squeak: Dont give that trash which is TOTALLY FALSE. (Midvar Sheker Tirchak) Stay far from lies. The Torah says stay far from it and you are getting very close to it.
September 3, 2009 7:56 pm at 7:56 pm #658835mepalMemberomg, I never had such a good laugh. Thanks MKY for providing it.
September 3, 2009 7:58 pm at 7:58 pm #658836mi keamcha yisroelMemberListen you people think i’m making things up. Up in shamayim after 120 they will tell you the truth.

September 3, 2009 8:00 pm at 8:00 pm #658838mi keamcha yisroelMemberobviously you people are telling me that it’s okay for children to have all these gadgets DS, PSP, and all the trash. I”M NOT BEING MESHADECH WITH APIKORSIM
September 3, 2009 8:00 pm at 8:00 pm #658839squeakParticipantIt seems I am having a hard time making myself understood today. I don’t suppose you might see the irony in my quoting a “study” that shows statistical evidence is made up? It was purely meant as a humorous comment. However, now that you bring it up – I do believe with certainty that the figure quoted is completely made up.
And, sir, please watch your language, most certainly when you have no leg to stand on. Calling randomly quoted statistics into question is not lying, most of the time it is the statistic that is a lie.
September 3, 2009 8:03 pm at 8:03 pm #658840mi keamcha yisroelMemberThe Torah says “Ushmartem Meod Es Nafshoseichem” Watch your soul very much. Allowing children to play DS and PSP and I-Touch is being over on this issur!! SHOTEH what you people are

September 3, 2009 8:13 pm at 8:13 pm #658850AnonymousInactiveI think it’s time to bring this thread back on topic. We are discussing electronic gadgets and if children need them.
September 3, 2009 8:19 pm at 8:19 pm #658853AnonymousInactiveI’m wondering, what do you folks think of e-book readers? Good for kids or not?
September 3, 2009 8:19 pm at 8:19 pm #658854mi keamcha yisroelMemberwhat is that?
September 3, 2009 8:23 pm at 8:23 pm #658855mepalMemberMKY, let me explain. At first I was just picking at your statistic. Then, you’re response got me loling. Never did I give any sort of hechsher on any electronic game. Got it?
September 3, 2009 8:23 pm at 8:23 pm #658856mi keamcha yisroelMemberif it is exclusively books, i pasken kosher
September 3, 2009 8:23 pm at 8:23 pm #658857mepalMemberSeptember 3, 2009 8:27 pm at 8:27 pm #658858mi keamcha yisroelMemberyeah, but from the fact that your’e making a whole laughing stock out of it and me you seem to be saying it is kosher? AND IT IS TOTALLY TRAFE
September 3, 2009 8:28 pm at 8:28 pm #658859mepalMemberI apologize you implied that from my words with no such intentions.
September 3, 2009 8:29 pm at 8:29 pm #658860mi keamcha yisroelMemberapologies accepted. sorry for my strong language that i had used
September 3, 2009 8:30 pm at 8:30 pm #658861squeakParticipantThe electronic book readers take all the fun out of curling up with an enjoyable book. And if it’s newspaper reading, the versions for the reader leave a lot to be desired. The only value it may have is if you are doing serious reading, such as textbooks or pdf files for elearning. In that case it would be convenient. JMO.
September 3, 2009 8:31 pm at 8:31 pm #658862mi keamcha yisroelMembergood point
September 3, 2009 8:32 pm at 8:32 pm #658864anon for thisParticipantames, I agree that both reading & electronic/ computer games have their place, and that important skills can be learned from each. Both have disadvantages in common though, chiefly that they tend to be isolating & sedentary activities. Regarding the first, it’s not difficult to discuss books & electronic games with your kids, and to talk about their opinions & discuss what they’ve learned. As far as the second point, it’s important to balance reading/ electronic games with physical activity.
September 3, 2009 8:33 pm at 8:33 pm #658865AnonymousInactiveDon’t you think a child would get excited about reading if he/she is using a Kindle or a Reader Touch?
September 3, 2009 8:35 pm at 8:35 pm #658866squeakParticipantA child excited about reading a book that he/she cannot chew up, rip, or turn pages back as you read them to him/her? Excited about a book that, if thrown against the wall, ceases to be a book? Where’s the excitement?
September 3, 2009 8:36 pm at 8:36 pm #658867AnonymousInactivesqueak, you are from another generation!
September 3, 2009 8:37 pm at 8:37 pm #658868squeakParticipantDid you doubt it?
September 3, 2009 8:37 pm at 8:37 pm #658869mepalMemberMKY, thats perfectly alright. I can handle it.
September 3, 2009 8:38 pm at 8:38 pm #658870anon for thisParticipantMod 26, I don’t think that an e-book reader is the best way to engage a reluctant reader. In my opinion, a better way would be to find books about his area of interest, appropriate to his reading level, and mention why he might find the book interesting. Sometimes reading a chapter or two aloud can also help.
September 3, 2009 8:42 pm at 8:42 pm #658871mi keamcha yisroelMemberwhat is perfectly alright, mepal?
mod, as was mentioned before, e-books are good for school, textbooks, but not for reading altz enjoyement.
September 3, 2009 8:47 pm at 8:47 pm #658872mepalMemberMKY, re: sorry for my strong language that i had used
