Isn’t is assur?
I am currently eating pareve and just thought about eating both milchigs and fleishigs, separately. I was reading something about menu ideas.
It must at least be assur when I say a bracha, right?

December 12, 2016 3:10 am at 3:10 am #1197963Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantCompletely muttar. Why would you think it’s assur?
December 12, 2016 3:50 am at 3:50 am #1197964LightbriteParticipantBecause I listened to a shiur today and the rabbi talked about how our mitzvot are dependent on our intentions.
So if someone is putting on tefillin because he has to but doesn’t want to, the act itself is less valuable than if someone was super excited to put on tefillin. He gave an example of someone who said he couldn’t wait until putting on tefillin the next day. How nice it would be if everyone [men] thought like that, said the rabbi.
I was thinking about my intentions before saying a bracha AND while eating the food.
What if I said the bracha with proper kavanah, but later was eating the same food but thinking about other food.
Then, what if that other food was assur at the time. Or what if I, like I did while eating tonight, imagined eating both meat and dairy while looking at menu ideas.
Oh. Also the rabbi said that why we are eating matters. If someone eats to be healthy and strong to do more mitzvot, that is greater than someone who is eating because he likes the taste of food.
So I was eating without appreciating the food since I thought of other food at the time. I wasn’t eating mindfully.

Second of all, even on the highest level, there is no problem with thinking about one food while eating another. While making the bracha, one should try not to think about anything else, but it’s a high level that most people are still striving for.
Try to have kavana for one word of each bracha you make. If you can do that, that’s awesome!

It’s totally fine. While it is indeed admirable to have noble intentions in mind while doing seemingly mundane things such as eating or going to sleep, it is not mandatory. And there is certainly no problem of thinking about milchigs and fleishigs food in the same meal.
So I was eating without appreciating the food since I thought of other food at the time. I wasn’t eating mindfully.
I give you a bracha that this should be the greatest of your spiritual struggles 🙂
In last week’s parsha, we read about Yaakov Avinu dreaming of angels climbing up and down a ladder. This ladder represents (among other things) the process of spiritual growth. One must ascend this ladder rung by rung, slowly but surely, to make sure that they end up on the top. To attempt to leap to the top in one jump would be too risky, and probably end in a great fall.
Remember, slow and steady wins the race.

December 12, 2016 6:30 am at 6:30 am #1197968Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantmw13 +1!
December 12, 2016 6:35 am at 6:35 am #1197969Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantLB- in terms of intentions, the main thing is to think in general about how much you love Hashem and how you want to serve Him and how your purpose in life is to serve Him.
If you are generally conscious of the fact that your entire purpose in life is to get close to Hashem, then on some level everything you are doing becomes part of that. Even when you are eating or sleeping it is all for the general purpose of being a healthy, happy person and the reason for being a happy, healthy, person is to serve Hashem.
The point is that you don’t have to worry about what you are thinking about each second. There may be such a level but it’s not one you need to think about right now. As long as you know in general that your purpose in life is to serve Hashem, that is enough to give meaning to everything you do.
December 12, 2016 7:45 am at 7:45 am #1197970WinnieThePoohParticipantThe issue of mixing meat and milk applies to eating, cooking and deriving pleasure/benefit (such as feeding a pet, using a combination in a shampoo, etc) but not to thinking.
December 12, 2016 10:14 am at 10:14 am #1197971Abba_SParticipantThe fact that you wanted to eat milk and dairy and were able to overcome your desires merits you a greater reward. For example how can you get reward for not eating pork? The answer is to think you really want to eat it but you are commanded not to eat it so therefor you aren’t eating it.
