    Last year when I visited E”Y, I saw that most toilets were dual-flush types – two buttons – one for a small flush for liquids and paper, another for a bigger flush for solids. I thought this was a great idea in this water-short country.

    I saw a dual-flush adapter recently at the home improvement store and thought I would try it – you replace the flush valve with this thing, and replace the handle with this dual-button.

    I installed the first one without tools in about 20 minutes, the second one in about five minutes, and after a week, I’m very pleased with it.

    They claim it saves up to 70% of your toilet’s water consumption.

    So far, so good, I’m very pleased with it. It definitely saves water. It cost about $18, and will soon save us more than it cost.

    These toilets are increasing in popularity. Where I live, the government (cannot remember if it was the city council or the provincial gov’t) gave people a real deal to install these. I can’t remember exactly how the promotion worked but all of the home improvement and plumbing supply stores had certain models on sale and then purchasers received a form to send in and receive a rebate. One day the newpaper showed a picture of many old toilets sitting on the curb for trash pickup. It was a very successful campaign.

    the city of NY recently passed a law requiring all (nyc) government and commercial buildings to install dual flush toilets, so those hwo live in NYC and frequent these places, will start seeing them soon.

    Toilets these days dont have a poweful enough flush as it is. It often takes 2 or 3 flushes each time. Until they started forcing these low power units on everyone, one flush always did the job.

    Darchei Noam – like this, “No 1, use the top button. No 2, use the bottom button.” surprisingly, it worked. We have two boys, 17 and 18. They are usually a bit slow to learn conservation methods.

    Someone: it is completely mechanical. No electricity involved. Just a fancy flush valve to replace the flapper in your toilet.

    SeanBenNoach: “If it’s yellow, let it mellow” was our previous policy. The boys didn’t cooperate with that initiative.

    MinyanGal: This is not a whole new toilet, it is an adapter for old toilets. You only replace the flapper and the handle with this device.

    Helpful: We have no problems with insufficient flushing. I did plenty of research before we bought these toilets. There are plenty of good low-flush toilets around. Now, the dual flush uses about .9 gallons for the liquid flush, 1.6 gallons for the solid flush.

    p.s. Our synagogue now has a water-free urinal that seems to work just fine.

    I did want to mention that this adapter works on both old (high-flush) and newer (low-flush) toilets. It’s really quite ingenious.

    Dear helpful and others:

    I just took a quick trip to Home Depot, and noticed that toilets are now rated on conservation AND flushing power. Next time, you may want to oversee your plumber’s selection.

    There were plenty of low- and very low-flush toilets (1.6G and 1.28G) that were rated 10 for flushing power.

    just a follow up:

    after four weeks of use, the toilet adapter is still working as advertised. The boys seem to be pushing the right button, and I am quite happy with this product.

    I will let you know more when we receive our next water bill.
