    I Just wanted to start a Thread on tips, info, facts, and helpful pointers on how to be a Happy driver.

    As most of us know, the driving conditions these days aren’t the most pleasant of tasks. Everything from getting cut-off to traffic jams, gives us just another grey hair to add to the bunch.

    So here’s a thread about helping others and ourselves become calmer, happier, less tense, drivers, through experiences and such.

    Just one less thing to worry about on a daily basis: The stresses of driving a vehicle.

    Let’s help each other out!

    p.s. please no bashing or negativity (unless of course you are giving constructive, respectful criticism). Let’s keep this a stress free zone 🙂

    Have a bottle of childrens bubbles in the car. Next time your stuck in a traffic jam open your window and blow bubbles! Hey presto both you and the drivers around will be smiling. Try it – it works.

    Ever since they paved paradise, there’s not much driving – it’s just a parking lot 😉

    What do you mean ames?

    That squeaks paving paradise post should have been deleted because no one under 50 will understand it?

    I have a suggestion, but implementing it could get you a dee-triple u-ai, IYKWIM.

    If driving causes you stress, keep a stress ball in the car and use it in traffic. It works better than honking your horn, believe it or not!

    er, well

    <gulp>

    <sneeze>

    <wipe nose on sleeve>

    <cough>

    <cough again>

    <wipe nose again>

    ahem…

    well, uh…

    yes- at least once a day, allow a pedestrian to cross (before mowing him/her down)

    /end

    uh, why would that make you a happier driver? (unless the wiping nose on sleeve part makes you happy?)

    areivim, I ALWAYS allow them to start crossing before I mow them down 🙂 And you’re right, it is a huge stress relief!

    squeak, just let us know before you get into the car. So we can be adequately prepared…

    mepal, if you’re ever waiting to cross the street, and a guy with a bow-tie, pinstriped blue suit, horn rimmed glasses, receding hairline, and a gray attache case slows down and waves for you to cross despite the fact that he has the green light, watch out. That’s not me, by the way.

    nah, that’ll never happen. This is NY, dont forget. Its more like, if the pedestrian has the green light, watch out! A car might still be coming thru the red light! Check again, and again, and again…

    I have warned you before about clearing your throat in front of the open-mic, I am a bit surprised that I have to warn you about making yourself presentable when the cameras are rolling…

    ok ok, I straightened my neon green bowtie- better?

    btw- when you’re 7’10”, and need to bend as far down to the mic as I do, the bowtie n’ red beard tend to brush against the mic… my voice is not that muffled (close- but not that muffled)

    Quit driving in New York City. Seriously, its amazing how driving in Iowa or West Virginia is relaxing.

    Someone (a male singer) did a cover fairly recently, I think, or else drs’ offices, etc. are choosing to play it all the time.

    SJS – it is so relaxing that it is dangerous! Counting corn rows is more soporific than sheep.

    squeak i second that!

    although what could be even more dangerous is driving on a trpk for over 200 miles at some unearthly hour… you’re soooo tired and the road just stretches e-n-d-l-e-s-s-l-y….

    But whats more dangerous, is an angry driving.

    Back to the topic on hand.

    any suggestions?

    Yoshi- Try listening to a Torah Tape, Dof Yomi Tape or anything that has Kedusha. This may help put you in a better frame of mind while driving.

    #656403

    MUSIC good tapes relieve driving stress and keep you upbeat!!

    When I first started driving, I took things a bit too personal, and aggressively. If I got cut off, I honked, and got upset. If I saw someone doing something wrong, I got upset. I can go on forever with everything that made me an “emotional” driver.

    But then one day I just learned to “let go.” To detach myself from the rest of the road. To be chilled, and relaxed, with of course STILL being alert and observant of the road around me.

    That’s a big thing many drivers have to deal with. Not to take things so “personally.” If someone cuts you off, honking and screaming wont get you anywhere. If someone passes you up, so be it, you’re going the speed limit so there’s nothing to fuss about. If someone is flashing you, and tailgating, either pull over if you feel too much in danger, or just drive on your merry way and ignore the other persons rantings. If you feel yourself getting angry or heated, then start singing a silly tune in your head, and take some deep breathes.

    I sing along or drum my fingers on the steering wheel to what’s in the CD player (Miami Boys Choir — Shabbos Yerushalayim).

    If I mentioned the other CDs in my car, that would give away my identity.
