Do you think it “yeshivishe” to insist on drinking out of a cup? or is it just boorish to drink from a bottle
June 2, 2011 2:46 am at 2:46 am #774248Pac-ManMemberIt’s boorish and am haratzish.
June 2, 2011 2:54 am at 2:54 am #774249yeshivabochur123Participantdrinking out of a bottle is really disgusting. In fact once on a shidduch I saw a girl do it (there was a glass there she just didn’t pour her water into the glass) and I broke off the shidduch. There were other things too but this was like a last straw kind of thing (if she would have used a straw I would have been OK.)
June 2, 2011 3:06 am at 3:06 am #774250wanderingchanaParticipantwater in the middle of the day – OK
wine at any time – not OK
June 2, 2011 3:22 am at 3:22 am #774251real-briskerMemberIt definetly is a better drink out pf a cup.
June 2, 2011 3:46 am at 3:46 am #774252ZachKessinMemberI generally carry a bottle of water with me. Israeli summers are hot and drinking water as you go is just a good idea.
June 2, 2011 4:09 am at 4:09 am #774253cherrybimParticipant“drinking out of a bottle is really disgusting. In fact once on a shidduch I saw a girl do it”
If there was beer in the bottle, the maidle was perfectly within the bounds of proper etiquette.
June 2, 2011 6:09 am at 6:09 am #774254BSDMemberMy toddler does it all the time-can’t fall asleep without it.(no beer though)
June 2, 2011 6:40 am at 6:40 am #774255mamashtakahMemberBeer is meant to be consumed from a bottle or chilled beer mug.
June 2, 2011 6:43 am at 6:43 am #774256Dovid S.MemberGirls drinking beer is also boorish, you wouldn’t say? So it is to the same effect. I personally think drinking out of a bottle is not refined and boorish.
June 2, 2011 8:26 am at 8:26 am #774257basket of radishesParticipantDrinking out of a bottle is practical. Pouring it into a glass is refined. That is not the ultimate way of being refined, but it is a way of refining your talents. But that said, there is nothing inherently “disgusting” about drinking out of a bottle. It might be ok in certain places and if you go to a refined eatery, it would seem like you are going “country”.
June 2, 2011 12:39 pm at 12:39 pm #774258PosterMemberI sometimes drink out of a can of sprite or a 20 oz bottle. I wouldnt have done it on a date though.

I know this isn’t the only reason, but seriously? You have a lot to learn about marriage and relationships…let this be the worst thing you have to deal with in life….
June 2, 2011 1:31 pm at 1:31 pm #774260mikehall12382Member“Girls drinking beer is also boorish, you wouldn’t say?”
Thanks for letting me know, I’ll be sure to let my wife know she has been called boorish…
June 2, 2011 2:03 pm at 2:03 pm #774261ZeesKiteParticipantQuestion:
Does ????? ???? ???? ???? apply to drinking too?
June 2, 2011 2:34 pm at 2:34 pm #774262bptParticipantAt the dinner table? Its poor manners.
At the park or while playing? Nothing wrong with it.
June 2, 2011 2:46 pm at 2:46 pm #774263A Heimishe MomParticipantAgree with bpt: sitting in a lounge with a glass on the table it is very course and unrefined to drink from the bottle. But take the same bottle on a picnic or a walk and it’s totally fine (as long as she doesn’t wipe her mouth on her sleeve!)
Beer from a bottle – well let’s just stop at “beer.”
June 2, 2011 2:56 pm at 2:56 pm #774264Busy As A BeeParticipantthere is a certain refinement in only drinking out of a cup or at least with a straw, but its not always practical… gotta remember that.
June 2, 2011 3:10 pm at 3:10 pm #774266TikkunHatzotMemberWhy waste as much water washing a cup that you would be drinking from it? To me, it seems wasteful to do.
I can understand that it’s not refined drinking out of a HUGE 1-gallon container, but the smaller bottle of water & coke cans are meant to be drinking straight from the bottle/can.
June 2, 2011 3:18 pm at 3:18 pm #774267real-briskerMemberTikkun – Why are cans ‘meant’ to be drank out of, Who decided that?
June 2, 2011 3:18 pm at 3:18 pm #774268Dovid S.MemberTikkun- We are talking about big bottles, of course nobody expects you to use cups with a can of coke!
Yeshivabochur- Man, you ARE picky… I can understand how one can find the act of drinking water from the bottle distasteful, but breaking up a relationship because of it? Ouch…
ZeesKite: Translate “????”. Yep
June 2, 2011 3:27 pm at 3:27 pm #774269showerzingerMemberMy rebbe always said that “a mentch doesn’t drink out of the bottle.” There is a certain refinement to pouring whatever beverage it is (water, soda, beer etc.)into a cup. However, not being “refined” does’t make it “disgusting,” rather just average behavior, and as bochurim (and Yidden I would extrapolate)I assume the goal is to strive to be refined.
June 2, 2011 4:17 pm at 4:17 pm #774270mikehall12382MemberJune 2, 2011 4:31 pm at 4:31 pm #774271goldenkintMembermy mom told me the story about a mother -in -law -to- be who saw the future daughter-in -law come in from a hot, long walk and drink from a bottle. she called off the shidduch. what astounded my mom is that this happened in 1945 to survivors of Auschwitz. and my mom couldn’t get over the fact that after surviving Hitler’s death camps this woman would care about drinking out of the bottle. i felt bad for the girl who had spent the previous 6 years suffering under the Nazis. but obviously that was the type of upbringing the mother in law wanted. my mom and i both agreed that the girl was better off without such a critical mother-in -law. don’t know if we were right or not
June 2, 2011 4:31 pm at 4:31 pm #774272TikkunHatzotMemberTikkun- We are talking about big bottles, of course nobody expects you to use cups with a can of coke!
In Jerusalem, it seems to be expected to drink a can of coke from a cup.
Tikkun – Why are cans ‘meant’ to be drank out of, Who decided that?
The ones that make the cans; Coca-Cola Co & PepsiCo, as seen in the television commericals during the Cola Wars of the 1980’s.
June 2, 2011 4:36 pm at 4:36 pm #774273oomisParticipantOh chill out! Water is often MEANT to be drunk from a bottle (presuming it is a small water bottle and not a Litre size). To break up a shidduch over a girl drinking water from her bottle is just plain foolish. For other reasons, which you only alluded to, fine, but “the last straw” was her drinking out of the bottle????
BPT is right. If you are at dinner in a fancy restaurant, it would look wrong. But there are fast food places that served bottled water and Snapple/soda, and it is perfectly acceptable to drink from the bottle. At a picnic or strolling on a casual date at the zoo or Aquarium, it is absolutely proper. We are so hung up on naarishkeiten, that we cannot see the forest for the trees.
June 2, 2011 4:37 pm at 4:37 pm #774274ToiParticipantWhether cans were designed to be drunk from or not doesn’t mean it would be refined. would you drink out of a can in front of the queen of england?
June 2, 2011 4:47 pm at 4:47 pm #774275apushatayidParticipantIs it more refined to drink from a bottle or from those “hydration packs” they make for hikers where you strap a large bottle to your back and drink through straws that come under your arms up near your mouth?
June 2, 2011 4:53 pm at 4:53 pm #774276real-briskerMemberOh, so the goyisha company decided what is mentchlach.
June 2, 2011 4:54 pm at 4:54 pm #774277shlishiMemberI am disgusted when I see someone open the fridge and drink straight out of the milk or juice bottle. I would think anyone would be so disgusted. (And not just because of the germs for future drinkers of that container. This would be true even if they polish off the bottle.)
June 2, 2011 5:13 pm at 5:13 pm #774278yeshivabochur123Participantwhy would drinking from a small bottle make it better? From a can is even worse, do you know how dirty the tops of cans are and you are going to touch it with your mouth? You don’t know where its been. You might as well lick the top of a garbage can. Also just to clarify there were other things about the shidduch that I broke it off but I have to say that this really bothered me. Even if you do drink from bottles when you are trying to make an impression why do something so disgusting? Even if you are on a picnic or at the zoo whats wrong with using a cup?
June 2, 2011 5:16 pm at 5:16 pm #774279BSDMember“would you drink out of a can in front of the queen of england?”
Only if she makes the initiative. But it would never happen-she only drinks tea.
“Does ????? ???? ???? ???? apply to drinking too?”
You get downgraded from a dog to a puppy. And that’s if it’s from a cup. If it’s from a bottle, I don’t even want to say what you become…
June 2, 2011 5:52 pm at 5:52 pm #774280ToiParticipantDomeh likelev only applies to a substantial food item like a cookie. a drink would not be a problem.
BSD- what i mean is do you feel its respectful in front of malchus. i don’t. i wonder if they only served tea at the wedding
June 2, 2011 6:17 pm at 6:17 pm #774281apushatayidParticipantFor what it is worth, this is from a NY Times article about then President Bush hosting the Queen of England. I doubt the moderators will allow a link to the NY Times. The article appeared on May 4 2007 if you want to search for the articles in the archives on the NY Times site.
Here is a relevent snippet.
Later in the article, when commenting on a visit President Bush made to England…..
In July 2001, the Bushes had lunch with the queen at Buckingham Palace.
And the article concludes….
June 3, 2011 12:31 am at 12:31 am #774282cherrybimParticipantMany times drinking from the bottle is a lot more sanitary than drinking from a glass.
June 3, 2011 1:42 am at 1:42 am #774283HaLeiViParticipantHow about Nir’eh k’Rravson, since you are drinking from more than serving? The Gemara attributes that great title to someone biting into more than a k’Zais.
June 3, 2011 6:31 pm at 6:31 pm #774284apushatayidParticipantHaleivi. In light of the gemara you reference, how should someone eat an apple? the average apple is larger than a kzayis. Same is true of a hamburger a slice of pizza a danish, a bowl of cereal or a doughnut. Do you perhaps mean taking a bite larger than a kzayis as opposed to biting from something larger than a kzayis?
June 3, 2011 10:22 pm at 10:22 pm #774285mewhoParticipantis it ok to drink from a bottle when it is baby formula?
does it matter if the baby is male or female?
June 3, 2011 10:57 pm at 10:57 pm #774286HaLeiViParticipantA bowl of cereal is usually eaten with a spoon. I’m not sure what you had in mind. As for your other examples, they are very good examples, indeed. I’m sure you don’t consider biting into an apple, refined. In the setting that you’d do one you can do the other.
