I listened to a CD that I haven’t listened to in some time. The last time I listened to it was when I suffered from anxiety. Now that I heard the songs once again, I literally got nauseous and had a stomach ache!
Does this happen to you too?
August 23, 2011 2:11 am at 2:11 am #801399ursula momishMemberSo do certain odors/aromas, or colors, or anything that was associated in your mind with a strong feeling or memorable happening, even if at the time of the occurrence you did not consciously notice those details. Why do they play happy music when you walk to the chuppah? Why do theatrical performances rely on certain types of music to set up the listeners on what to expect in the upcoming scene? Because in our minds certain kinds of tunes are already associated with certain kinds of events (or vice versa), or we want them to be.
Refuah sheleimah!
If you want to get to be able to listen to the tape again without getting sick, maybe when you are in an exceptionally good mood, with a good friend around, listen to one song, then stop and do something you really enjoy. Kind of retrain your brain in regard to this CD. Hatzlachah!

August 23, 2011 2:45 am at 2:45 am #801401Sister BearMemberIf I listen to music or something that I only listened to on a long car trip than it will bring back memories…no symptoms though, just memories.
August 23, 2011 3:18 am at 3:18 am #801402mustangriderMembermaybe it was the music that made you anxious in the fist place? music has intence power and can greatly impact your emotions…
but yes music can bring back memories – again its very powerful.
August 23, 2011 3:28 am at 3:28 am #801403wanderingchanaParticipantDefinitely, 100%. The reverse also happens – try to stick with music that brings back good memories for you.

August 23, 2011 8:42 am at 8:42 am #801407kapustaParticipantYes. I think the brain has a sort of file and the whole “setting” (even the unimportant stuff) gets filed away. I associate a certain CD with a book I was reading the first time I heard it.
August 23, 2011 11:32 am at 11:32 am #801408Moshiach please comeMemberI can’t speak out my emotions so easily with music since I’m deaf, but I play a ton of music and everyone likes what I play forreal!!! I might produce a cd one day.. I’m in the process of compiling songs that I’ve created for this!! I was born with a natural ability for it. I’ve been playing piano since I was 5 naturally!!! Started lessons at 8….
August 23, 2011 12:57 pm at 12:57 pm #801409Moshiach please comeMemberDeaf- selective hearing!!! I block out these emotions… When there’s a will Theres a way!!

August 23, 2011 2:01 pm at 2:01 pm #801411mommamia22ParticipantThere’s a song I used to hear being played in my sister’s kitchen before she passed away. I get all choked up when I hear that song now. You can build new associations with music, if you want to. I would not want to, as it’s one of the few things that keeps those days fresh in my mind.
August 23, 2011 3:13 pm at 3:13 pm #801412happy faceMemberListening to the old Miami Boys Choir songs triggers so many memories!! As a child, i grew up with those tapes playing. When i listen to them now, i remember my wonderful blissful childhood!
August 23, 2011 3:38 pm at 3:38 pm #801413600 Kilo BearMemberYes, but not in a negative way. Some of the older songs just remind me of a simpler time. However, the quality of the recordings and the simple arrangements compared to what the same artists produce today also remind me that in those times the community was not as well off as it is now and that we did not have access to the kind of technology that we use today.

August 23, 2011 6:52 pm at 6:52 pm #801415adorableParticipanti dont only have it with music. have it all the time when I pass certain places or when I go on certain highways.
August 23, 2011 7:24 pm at 7:24 pm #801416Bar ShattyaMemberSometimes I am listening to a fine song and something happens and I think “aw shucks, now every time I hear this song I’m going to think of this.” It can be quite depressing. Really ruins the song.
August 24, 2011 3:46 pm at 3:46 pm #801417adorableParticipantyou are forcing that connection to be stuck in your mind. Not every single time that I hear a song do I know where I listened to it the first time… just SOME songs.
