I was thinking about the words and I realized I’m not sure what “ahavas kallah mesos dodim” means or rather what it refers to. I can translate the words but it doesn’t quite help me. Actually I don’t know what the first part means either. He who understand the speech of the rose amongst thorns? Its all very poetic and I would love to get pshat or if someone knows where I can look it up!

    Thanks 🙂

I’m not sure what it means, but the purpose is for the brother who has a decent voice to get his singing out of the way, to make room for the truly atrocious cousin to sing at dinner.

    Based upon Shir Hashirim:

Mi ban = The One (Hashem) who understands

siach shoshan chochim = the speech of his nation known as the rose among thorns

Ahavas kallah = the love of a kallah (Klal Yisroel linking with the Torah and Hashem)

Mesos dodim = the joy of lovers (Klal Yisroel linking with Torah and Hashem)

Hu yivareich = He should bless (second the motion of the Sheva Brachos. We can say Sheva Brachos all we want but unless Hashem signs on the deal, nothing doing)

Translate the song the way you learn Shir Hashirim. If you think Shir Hashirim can simply be translated without explanation, think again!

Thanks artchill. What does it mean that He understands our speech?

Our tefillos. Based on the words describing Rivkah’s tefilla in the fiedl, “LaSUACH basadeh.”

Thank you artchill, that was a beautiful translation.

    I think you meant Yitzchak’s tefila since it’s ???? ???? ???? ????

It was Yitzchak who was davening in the field. So why do we mention that He understands our Tefillos what’s the point?
