Anyone live in Miami Beach area? My kids are going home and I can finally take care of myself. I feel like I’m drowning and can’t stop coughing. It is time to go to the doctor after 2 weeks of suffering.

February 6, 2011 7:00 pm at 7:00 pm #738912aries2756ParticipantOnly “wintering” here, but it grows on you, kinda hard to go home.
February 6, 2011 7:44 pm at 7:44 pm #738913HealthParticipantAries -It’s called a Snowbird. You don’t need a pulmonologist. You’re wasting your time and your money. Go see a PCP! Do you have fever, aches, shakes, chills or night sweats? Have you been getting progressively worse or are you just coughing? You definitely should go to a doctor, but if you answered no to all the above, I posted before most cases of bronchitis are viral. If it’s viral, antibiotics aren’t indicated. Breathing in steam, drinking hot clear liquids and using a vaporizer or a cold humidifier at night will help you get over it quicker. I’d also just lay in the sun all day, since you’re in Miami. Just don’t forget to use sunscreen and drink a lot of liquids (Cool or hot).
Ask your friends there who they use for a PCP, you can even just use a neighborhood clinic. Most cases of viral bronchitis, by two weeks you are feeling better, but you have this nagging cough. If you’re still bringing up stuff, do the things above. If the cough is dry & hacking, you can try an OTC cough remedy containing dextromethorphan. There are also Rx products for coughs like codeine/hydrocodone syrup. These will help you sleep at night.
February 7, 2011 1:42 am at 1:42 am #738914☕️coffee addictParticipantHealth,
he does that stuff too!
(he treats everyone in yeshiva as a PCP would too!)
February 7, 2011 2:12 am at 2:12 am #738915HealthParticipantmbachur – It’s not a matter of that. It’s a matter of what he will charge her, being she ain’t a yeshiva bachur. Also, can she just get an appt. tomorrow without having to be pushed in?
February 7, 2011 2:18 am at 2:18 am #738916always hereParticipantHealth~ on another thread I had also suggested: “IMO, aries just needs a regular physician. the cough may just be lingering, but it doesn’t hurt to get it checked out if one feels it’s hung on too long, or if there are other symptoms.”
February 7, 2011 2:23 am at 2:23 am #738917☕️coffee addictParticipantidk his schedule but what does it matter if she can be seen tomorrow? got any better ideas?
:p> mbachur <d:
February 7, 2011 2:23 am at 2:23 am #738918☕️coffee addictParticipantaries please tell me how it goes in the end
:p> mbachur <d:
February 7, 2011 2:53 am at 2:53 am #738919HealthParticipantAlways here – Thanks for the second opinion. Are you also in the medical field?
February 7, 2011 2:56 am at 2:56 am #738920always hereParticipantHealth~ nope, just a mother :), bobbe :), & patient 🙁
February 7, 2011 3:03 am at 3:03 am #738921HealthParticipantMr. Bachur – I don’t know how old you are, but there are a lot of factors that going into making an appt. 1. Cost 2. What will the guy/gal do for me?
Most people are hesitant to go for medical care, but I try to guide people here based on what they post. Sometimes even in- person, the diagnosis isn’t that apparent. I gave her the info what to do if she has a viral bronchitis. She obviously is worried, that she has a bacterial infection. A PCP can diagnose a bacterial pneumonia or bronchitis. PCP’s usually charge a lot less than specialists. Also, she is going to get antibiotics if the PCP feels she needs it. It’s better to get them sooner than later and that’s why she should be seen tomorrow.
February 7, 2011 3:05 am at 3:05 am #738922aries2756ParticipantI will let you know how it goes. I am running a low grade fever, the cough is much worse than when this started two weeks ago and I feel like I am drowning in the secretions running down the back of my throat. Seriously drowning. I feel like I gulped in a mouthful of water from the pool or like I went under water. The fever comes and goes and when I feel the fever I also have aches and pains all over my body. Friday night I was shivering.
I cough so hard most of the night that I wake everyone else up and I can’t catch my breath. Then I guess I am so exhausted I pass out for a couple of hours.
I have had bronchitis for two years in a row that lingered and did not go away until I took strong antibiotics and Advair to inhale twice a day. Last year I was tested for pneumonia because it was so severe, it is just as bad maybe worse now, but I didn’t feel like I was drowning before, I just felt like my chest was congested and that my back and chest hurt so much from coughing.
I googled symptoms of bronchitis last night and it clearly states it can be caused by a virus or a bacterial infection. The doctor must determine which.
In all seriousness this is a big nisoyon I am really drained and exhausted and I can’t get any rest. If this Doctor takes my insurance I would rather see a specialist than someone who is not going to take me seriously at this point. I am ready to go to the Emergency Room tonight. I will wait for tomorrow.
February 7, 2011 3:15 am at 3:15 am #738923☕️coffee addictParticipantexactly! i wouldn’t be suprised if she has that too and most doctors here would probably give her zithromycin, and i totally agree that she should be seen on monday and thats why i gave her the info for a doctor that the jewish community trusts this is who I know she can trust because we do! i’m not going to pull any random doctor out of my hat which no one here goes to, regarding price, i dont know how much he will charge her he himself is very resonable and you never know her insurance might be very good and therefore have no costs
February 7, 2011 3:17 am at 3:17 am #738924☕️coffee addictParticipantoy refuah shleimah bkarov
i’m really sorry to hear that!
just confirming are you in the 41st street area? (North Miami Beach and Miami Beach gets confused from out of towners)
February 7, 2011 3:19 am at 3:19 am #738925always hereParticipant<Health~ recently my pain management dr. ordered a chest CT for something else; my PCP saw the results, listened w/ a stethoscope, & said I had mild (walking) pneumonia; I had NO symptoms (cough, etc.); he put me on a 5 dy regimen of antibiotics. THEN I developed a bad, lingering cough. a follow-up chest x-ray came out clear & fine… it’s all good, no bronchitis nor anything else, B’H>
when in doubt, check it out! 🙂
oh! this was written directly after Health’s post. refuah sheleima b’karov, aries!!
February 7, 2011 3:31 am at 3:31 am #738926aries2756ParticipantThank you everyone. Mbachur, I am on Collins so I know where it is thanks again. I will call in the morning. He is on my insurance.
February 7, 2011 3:36 am at 3:36 am #738927☕️coffee addictParticipantany time!
darn i keep on forgetting to put my signature!
:p> mbachur <d:
February 7, 2011 3:47 am at 3:47 am #738928HealthParticipantaries – Like I said, it’s very hard to get a clear picture of what’s going on from your description here. But from what I’m hearing because you say this is different than the last time, is that you had/have a viral URI, possible bronchitis and now it sounds like you have a secondary bacterial sinusitis. To all you armchair docs, Z-pack/zithro isn’t the drug of choice for sinusitis, like it is for bacterial bronchitis. Drugs for this are Amoxil or Omnicef or Vantin. For refractory or severe infection you give Augmentin.
If you start having difficulty breathing or you feel like you’re going to pass out or you start turning blue or gray, call 911!
February 7, 2011 3:53 am at 3:53 am #738929☕️coffee addictParticipanthealth, i dont know if you are referring to me but i’m just stating my experiences with doctors here in Miami Beach, i know it’s not ideal b/c i was given z packs for a “cough that wouldn’t go away” and the doctors kept of perscribing z packs and it didn’t help (the problem actually had to do with a q-tip stuck in my ear which the ENT took out, I felt better after that (sorry for the gross details everyone))
and it should be obvious if she turns blue or grey (or any other color for that matter) that she should call 911
February 7, 2011 3:55 am at 3:55 am #738930eclipseMemberAries,you are worrying me with all those symptoms, please get a CHEST X-RAY PRONTO!!
February 7, 2011 4:05 am at 4:05 am #738931HealthParticipanteclipse – the only time in such situations we order CXR, is if we are not sure if it’s bronchitis or pneumonia. We try to stay away from imaging, unless it’s necessary. If by exam, the PCP determines she does have a sinus infection, there is no reason to get a CXR!
February 7, 2011 4:09 am at 4:09 am #738932HealthParticipantmbachur – Surprising that they didn’t look in your ear during their exams.
February 7, 2011 4:11 am at 4:11 am #738933aries2756ParticipantHealth, thank you I appreciate your concern and advice. I am allergic to penicillin and can’t take codeine either because I have sleep apnea and it can cause me to stop breathing. (Have I told you guys too much about me yet? I feel like I am an open book).
February 7, 2011 4:15 am at 4:15 am #738934aries2756ParticipantHealth, here is something I forgot to tell you. My eyes are also glazed over with mucus.
February 7, 2011 4:18 am at 4:18 am #738935HealthParticipantAries – We have so many pts. claiming nowadays to be allergic to PCN, we now ask what the reaction was? So what was your reaction or did you have an allergy test?
February 7, 2011 4:20 am at 4:20 am #738936aries2756ParticipantI passed out. Two of my children developed a rash immediately.
February 7, 2011 4:22 am at 4:22 am #738938always hereParticipantaries~ you could have conjunctivitis (eyes).
February 7, 2011 4:23 am at 4:23 am #738939☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantR’fuah Sh’leimah!
February 7, 2011 4:28 am at 4:28 am #738940always hereParticipant[SELICHA! oy! Health~ on another thread I thought it was eclipse’s response, but the thread’s been closed. sorry.]
February 7, 2011 4:28 am at 4:28 am #738941aries2756ParticipantAH, that’s what I thought, but I would like to know the connection to what else is happening with me.
February 7, 2011 4:32 am at 4:32 am #738942☕️coffee addictParticipantthey did health! the ENT said it could be a bunch of things one of them was i was allergic to something (which i went to an allergist who said im allergic to aspergillis mold so that might have a part to it (he gave me nasenex too)
February 7, 2011 4:36 am at 4:36 am #738943always hereParticipantaries~ the only connection of the pink eye to everything else that ails you, IMO, would be the germs from coughing, etc. got into your eyes 🙁
February 7, 2011 4:39 am at 4:39 am #738944aries2756ParticipantThat could very well be, or on my pillow, blanket, hands, etc.
February 7, 2011 4:40 am at 4:40 am #738945aries2756ParticipantY O Y???? And I was being so good this year I got my flu shot and everything.
February 7, 2011 4:40 am at 4:40 am #738946HealthParticipantAries – Now you’re really making me work, I had to look it this up in another book -Currents 2009. The other I got from my pocketbook. It says for sinusitis and PCN allergy you use Bactrim or Doxycycline. Some people will give Macrolides for PCN allergy, but it’s probably better to use one of the other two. For refractory cases, you use a newer fluoroquinolone, eg. Levaquin.
February 7, 2011 4:51 am at 4:51 am #738947HealthParticipant“always here
and always on schedule
aries~ the only connection of the pink eye to everything else that ails you, IMO, would be the germs from coughing, etc. got into your eyes 🙁 “
Could be, but more likely the sinus infection spread to her eyes. In other words not a real eye infection!
February 7, 2011 4:58 am at 4:58 am #738948always hereParticipantHealth~ all just IMO; I have no experience with sinus infections, B’H. .. no medical training/ just trying to help.
my best advice: see a doctor, and my best wishes for a complete, speedy recovery!
February 7, 2011 4:59 am at 4:59 am #738949HealthParticipantaries -“because I have sleep apnea”
What do you do for your sleep apnea?
February 7, 2011 5:30 am at 5:30 am #738952aries2756ParticipantPap machine when I get home. BTW I was put on the Levoquin and Advair last year.
February 7, 2011 8:25 am at 8:25 am #738953yankdownunderMemberaires refuah shelaimah-feel better soon. Ask the Doctor you see if he will check your Vitamin D Level. Most people are deficient in this. So important in the Wintertime to be tested, because of the absence of Sunlight. Vitamin D is good for the Skeletal System and Spinal Chord. Very helpful for the Immune System.
February 7, 2011 11:24 am at 11:24 am #738954aries2756ParticipantThanks Yank, vitamin D is part of my morning handful!
February 7, 2011 12:30 pm at 12:30 pm #738955eclipseMemberMy mother had a symptomatic cough at a young age….an x-ray is a clear window to the lungs…Health, please “let” her take an x-ray!!
