“How are you? How is ur day? Isnt it beautiful outside with the sun shining and the birds chirping and hey watz up? Whats new? Havent you heard that i feel absolutly fantabulocious today? How is your afternoon…”
I do and it ticks me off when people say “Hi, how are you” and keep going. It sounds insincere and, well, ignorant, because the person does not seem to understand the meaning of the words they just uttered. It almost sounds like they don’t even care.
Yes, I always wait for the answer. If I ask it’s because I care and am serious about it.
I don’t however get insulted when people ask me and keep going. I kind of expect that because I know this question became quite routine and most people don’t think into it too much and that’s ok with me.
“how are you” functions as a conversation opening. you know there is an agenda coming that doesn’t involve how you are doing. but it makes sure that conversations don’t just start abruptly. that’s how we converse in America. politely fake 🙂
I usually say no matter the time of day, “Good morning, good afternoon, good evening, good night. Well that just covered your whole day. Enjoy!” Then I walk out, because I’m allergic to most kinds of social conversation.
