JKR once complained about fans using the nickname “Voldy”. She said something like it makes him sound like a big fluffy teddy bear and fans should realize that he is seriously evil and dangerous.
So I found it funny that she had Peeves use that term at the end:
We did it, we bashed them, wee Potter’s the one, And Voldy’s gone moldy, so now let’s have fun!”
to which Ron remarks:
Really gives a feeling for the scope and tragedy of the thing, doesn’t it?
May 14, 2012 11:45 pm at 11:45 pm #1003986Luna LovegoodParticipant42 – one of my favorite lines in the book.
May 15, 2012 12:18 am at 12:18 am #1003987LogicianParticipantPlease tell us you had a book open when you wrote that, or I will have to seriously doubt the “real life” of the mods which is often asserted here.
May 15, 2012 12:46 am at 12:46 am #1003988Luna LovegoodParticipantof course the mods don’t have a life – they spend all their time reading our posts and in mod 42’s case memorizing the Harry Potter books :):):)
May 15, 2012 12:51 am at 12:51 am #1003989cinderellaParticipantSo which character would I be?
May 15, 2012 2:01 am at 2:01 am #1003990YW Moderator-42ModeratorDid you just accuse me of having a life? I’m offended!
For the record, I didn’t have the book open when I wrote that (I did have Google open though)
May 15, 2012 2:04 am at 2:04 am #1003991YW Moderator-42ModeratorCinderella, you are Harry before his 11th birthday.
May 15, 2012 4:17 am at 4:17 am #1003992cinderellaParticipantAha. I’m trying to figure out what that implies…
May 15, 2012 6:48 am at 6:48 am #1003993YW Moderator-42ModeratorNothing too deep. I’m just comparing the way the Dursleys treated Harry to the way Cinderella was treated by her stepmother.
In terms of the shoe fitting, is it the shoe that chooses the girl?
May 15, 2012 12:53 pm at 12:53 pm #1003994cinderellaParticipantOh I get it. But yes, a shoe is like a wand. It had to look and feel good on you for you to buy it. A gorgeous shoe isn’t right for just anyone.
May 15, 2012 4:21 pm at 4:21 pm #1003995chocandpatienceMemberIf we’re doing HP, how about DWJ?
Nah, I don’t expect to find any fellow fans on an American website.
May 15, 2012 6:35 pm at 6:35 pm #1003996OneOfManyParticipantWhat is that? Doctor Who?
May 15, 2012 6:40 pm at 6:40 pm #1003997chocandpatienceMembernope.
Diana Wynne Jones. Authoress of many fantasy books. Ingenious.
May 15, 2012 6:45 pm at 6:45 pm #1003998OneOfManyParticipantBy the way, welcome back! ^_^
May 15, 2012 6:48 pm at 6:48 pm #1003999LogicianParticipantenjoyed them many years ago, but def. couldn’t play trivia…
May 15, 2012 8:39 pm at 8:39 pm #1004000OneOfManyParticipantOh, I actually know who that is. I have a friend who likes her. She keeps trying to get me to read them… 😛
May 15, 2012 8:41 pm at 8:41 pm #1004001OneOfManyParticipantWell, if we’re talking British fantasy novelists…how about Terry Pratchett? Which Discworld character would you be? ^_^
May 15, 2012 8:50 pm at 8:50 pm #1004002chocandpatienceMemberOOM: thanks 🙂
Logician: So did I, so you may be in my age range.
Many of them have recently become available online.
May 15, 2012 11:39 pm at 11:39 pm #1004003LogicianParticipantI keep trying to come up with a clearly-defined explanation for why i feel that the HP books don’t compare to many other great fantasy novels, but am not quite managing.
The clearest differenc is that she didn’t really create a new world, in the sense of new concepts etc. – all the details of magic are really old known ones, and she just wove them together (the only real exception that comes to mind are horcruxes). So what ? So maybe its a different escape: You don’t go into a magical world, she brings magic into your world. Hmn…
May 16, 2012 1:39 am at 1:39 am #1004004yitayningwutParticipantLogician – That’s gufa her gadlus. Anyone can make up new things, the kuntz is to be able to write a novel that works with all the old mythology.
May 16, 2012 1:59 am at 1:59 am #1004005OneOfManyParticipantI see there are no Discworlders here. That is a very big shame. 🙁 You should all read the series because it is like 100x more awesome than Harry Potter. And even The Guide. Yes, it’s that good.
May 16, 2012 2:32 am at 2:32 am #1004006LogicianParticipant1. No, not everyone can just make things up. There are very many terrible fantasy writers. Its a big talent to make up a new world, that readers will be drawn into.
May 16, 2012 3:33 am at 3:33 am #1004007YW Moderator-42ModeratorI think HP felt more “real” to people because it took place in our world and incorporated known legends into the world we know. So the readers can relate to the characters. Though at the end of the day, I don’t think anybody can purposely reproduce such a phenomena by studying what caused it. It was mostly mazel.
I liked the Inheritance series because the magic all worked very scientifically and was explained well in a good story. I know many people think the characters are very stereotypical etc but I thought it was very well written and entertaining.
Speaking of which, what happened to Toi?
May 16, 2012 1:12 pm at 1:12 pm #1004008chocandpatienceMember“because it is like 100x more awesome than Harry Potter”
you may get lynched
May 16, 2012 4:23 pm at 4:23 pm #1004009OneOfManyParticipantBut it’s truuuuuuuuuuuuuuue.
May 16, 2012 4:53 pm at 4:53 pm #1004010LogicianParticipantMod42 – I agree that’s prob. the popularity. I still think that overall it takes less talent.
August 10, 2012 10:05 pm at 10:05 pm #1004011Doodle-Man™MemberI picture crazybrit as a big fat person since their posts take up the entire page.
August 12, 2012 2:06 am at 2:06 am #1004012ShowjoeMemberOneOfMany: i love Terry Pratchett. hes brilliant! and Hilarious! i just love his books. and it is more then 100 times better then HP
August 12, 2012 4:00 am at 4:00 am #1004013OneOfManyParticipantYeeeeeees a TP fan! I can’t wait for Dodger to come out! ^_^
So which are your favorite Discworld books? Mine are Guards, Guards! and Making Money and Night Watch and Witches Abroad and Mort.
August 12, 2012 7:23 pm at 7:23 pm #1004014mw13Participant‘night watch’ defiantly makes it, ‘making money’ is also good. i also like ‘feet of clay’ and ‘reaper man’ (my first discworld book)and ‘hogfather’ and last but not least ‘Unseen Academicals’ also ‘going postal’. never read ‘Guards, Guards!’ ,’Witches Abroad’, and ‘Mort’. but they are all awesome.
August 12, 2012 7:57 pm at 7:57 pm #1004015OneOfManyParticipantOoh I love Reaper Man. Death + Auditors of Reality = epic adventures. ^_^
Guys, can we start a CR Discworld fan club? With member rankings based on how many you’ve read so far. 🙂
August 12, 2012 9:32 pm at 9:32 pm #1004016ShowjoeMembermods i by mistake posted on my brothers account this post

August 13, 2012 1:25 am at 1:25 am #1004018OneOfManyParticipantAha! I am at 27. So I will be president and you will be vice president.
Soooo…do we have a treasurer? ^_^
January 24, 2013 10:34 pm at 10:34 pm #1004019OneOfManyParticipantBump in the afternoon.
January 25, 2013 1:02 am at 1:02 am #1004020Torah613TorahParticipantI’m trying to think of how I picture people. I guess I really don’t.
And Harry Potter is great. My favorite characters are Dumbledore, Snape and Hermione. I don’t like JK Rowling as a person so much (although she’s done the best she could from where she comes.)
January 25, 2013 1:24 am at 1:24 am #1004021OneOfManyParticipantI’m trying to think of how I picture people. I guess I really don’t.
lol I don’t either. Like, in real life, a friend ask me if their parent or whatever looks like I imagined, and I’ll be like, “Uh…” And the funny thing is I am ordinarily a visual person. hmm
January 25, 2013 11:06 am at 11:06 am #1004022just my hapenceParticipantI’ve read every single TP, twice. Guess that makes me president for life…
January 25, 2013 1:02 pm at 1:02 pm #1004023OneOfManyParticipantAw shucks. And here I thought I was so cool… 😛
So I get to be VP, showjoe is Treasurer, and Luna can be a trainee. ^_^
January 25, 2013 2:33 pm at 2:33 pm #1004024ChortkovParticipantHarry Potter is amazing – ??? ?? ????? ??!!

January 27, 2013 1:30 am at 1:30 am #1004029OneOfManyParticipantpurplicious: I picture you as a Gumball. A purple one. ^_^
Showjoe: Eeeeeeeexcellent. ^_^ (lol I better keep at it if I don’t want to get demoted again :P)
My count does not include non-Discworld. I agree with you that they aren’t as good (Nation comes to mind) – with the exception of Good Omens, of COURSE (Terry Pratchett + Neil Gaiman = BEST BOOK EVER). I do have Dodger on my To-Read list – it sounds pretty good…
😛
January 27, 2013 1:33 am at 1:33 am #1004030OneOfManyParticipantlol I see you are suffering from some doublepostitis. If Dr. Goq or Syag were around, I’d say ask them for a prescription…I’m afraid you’ll have to tough it out. 😛
January 27, 2013 2:24 am at 2:24 am #1004031ShowjoeMemberOOM: well it a good thing u dont count them because i started reading one and it wasnt good (now that u mention it, it might have been /Nation/ (remember mods?)) so i would prefer if they weren’t counted.
P.S. if u look carefully my 2 posted are different. one says i read 21 books, and one says i read 22 books; the first time i miscalculated.
purplicious: how about u,did u count non-discworld books?
for next post :whats that got to do with enything?
January 27, 2013 2:25 am at 2:25 am #1004032YW Moderator-42ModeratorFYI, purplicious is not gumball as far as I can tell.
January 27, 2013 2:32 am at 2:32 am #1004033OneOfManyParticipantlol didn’t really think so…just sounds a lot like her. 😛
January 27, 2013 2:34 am at 2:34 am #1004034YW Moderator-42ModeratorI picture purplicious as Ginny with purple hair.
