Personally, I have no connection or feelings for the Royal Family, but I think there are things and concepts a Jew can learn from. We can better relate to the significance of dynastic ancestry and posterity.

The American way of all men are created equal, and the prevailing moral lewdness in society makes us so far-removed from appreciating the significance of ‘holy seed’.

The Jewish people are called a ‘Kingdom of Priests’, and along this privilege comes the responsibility of being the ‘light unto the nation of the world’.

This child will be born into English Royalty, but every Jewish child is born into the eternal royalty of the King of all kings.

Americans have no royal family. That’s why Obama can get away with same insulting and obnoxious things, and people (many on this site) can say insulting and obnoxious things back at him.

The British monarchy, at least as it exists today (and sort of exists in the commonwealth “realms”) is apolitical. It would be nice if there were someone in Washington who was apolitical (who could be the “adult in the room” when the politicians gather). Even if you ignore the biological connections to the British (almost everyone in Britian other than a recent immigrant is related to the royal family if you go back to its origins a millenia ago), it’s nice to have a family that are public-spirited celebrities that serve the country and the people, but aren’t tools of partisan bickering.

Not to mention babies are inherently good, which is why Ha-Shem makes so many of them.

The British Royal Family is definitely the subject of varying opinions as to whether we say the brocha for seeing a royal person. I certainly hope for the best for the baby and the entire royal family. That’s my point of view as a Jew.

However, as to the tabloid coverage, these are publications that have absolutely no intellectual content, and with the exception of some technicalities are no better than pornography. At the very least, they get into discussions as to the personal lives of “celebrities” that are nobody’s business. So as to their coverage of the Royal Family and the expected baby, I have absolutely no interest whatsoever.

I’d hope the baby and its mother are safe. Other than that, I don’t care any more about this baby than I would any other baby.

“the prevailing moral lewdness in society”

British royalty, and in fact European royalty in general, have long been notorious for their promiscuity and hedonism. You can get away with that when the ordinary rules of society don’t apply to you. Abarvenal was 100% correct in his assessment of monarchy.

That said, I wish the new baby all the best; may he be able to avoid harassment by the Paparazzi as well as public scandals.

I care, in the same way that I care about ANY woman having her first birth experience. Let her be healthy, have a healthy baby, and raise that child (hope it’s a girl, too), to be a GOOD person.

Otherwise, no, not really interested just because she’s a princess. BIG DEAL… I am not interested in so-called celebrities of the secular world. I have no plans to follow the sure to follow insipid and boring press coverage.

    Nope

FYI They changed the law in England and no matter which gender it is , It will be direct in line to be the Monarch . It used to be younger brothers had precidence over older sisters. Not anymore. If its a girl, She will be queen no matter how many susequent brothers she has

zahavasdad: Actually that isn’t yet true. The proposed law only becomes effective once all British Commonwealth nations ratify it into law, something that has yet to occur. Otherwise what could happen is that the different Commonwealth nations could have different Monarchs.

    #968191

I like babies. Babies are cute. But I have no particular attachment to the royal baby just because he/she is the royal baby.

Its actually a bigger issue in Japan, the Emperor there is a line for 1400 years. The son of the Emperor has 2 daughters and no male heir

That’s not technically correct. The Emperor’s *first* son has two daughters. His second son, however, has two daughters and a son.

For a long time, succession was a looming problem in Japan, as no males were born into the royal family in over 40 years. For a time, they were considering changing the rules. However, that became moot when Prince Akishino (the Emperor’s second son) had a baby boy (Hisahito) in 2006.

Eventually, the throne will go from Akihito (the current Emperor) to his first son (Nurahito) and then to his second son and then his grandson.

Actually, I need to correct myself here. Prince Naruhito only has one daughter. My apologies.

If Nurahito has a son in the future that new son will become Emperor rather than Akishino.

That is absolutely correct. However, considering the fact that Princess Masako (Nurahito’s wife) is now 49 years old, the odds are against the birth of a son (or anyone else).

Any opinions on the “Jewishness” of the royal baby? It seems like a load of conspiracies to me from unreliable sources, and yet there has to be some truth within all the garbage. Sad how far back assimilation dates. I’d love to hear from any genealogists out here.

Mammale, I have heard those rumors as well though I have no idea how factual they are.

If the Royal Baby is in fact Jewish then I care for him as I care for any other Jew, even if his father is not a Jew. I would hope that he has a Kosher bris b’kzmano.

I have not heard a rumor about Jewishness, but if so, then MAZEL TOV, sheyigdal (eventually) l’Torah Chuppah, umaasim tovim, and if not, then congratulations to the new parents, may they raise a good child to be a good adult.

To answer the genealogy question – There is considerable evidence that there was a Jewish principality in 9th century Languedoc centered on Narbonne. Contemporary chroniclers have written about it and our own sources, like Binyomin of Tudela writing a few hundred years later describes Narbonne as where the “zera hamalchus” resides when he meets the community’s leaders.

The family of the leaders of this principality, descended from someone named Machir of Narbonne, might coincide with a branch of the family of the Resh Galuta in Bavel being exiled in favour of another branch (see Otzar Hagedolim on the R’G Natronai II) and traveling from Bavel to this part of the Jewish world, as is described in some sources (For this you will have to read the very hard to find “A Jewish Principality in Feudal France” by Columbia U professor Arthur Zuckerman).

Eventually some of the descendants of these leaders assimilated, particularly the descendants of Guillaume De Gellone, of the family of Machir, though he himself apparently did not. These descendants married into several royal families of Europe, including the Boullion family who became “Kings of Jerusalem” during the Masaei Hatzlav, who eventually became the house of Anjou (Think Richard I), and whose descendants are all over Europe today including the British royal family.

From our Jewish perspective, there may be some further support for some of this narrative, including more snippets and fragments from Jewish travelers and from Rabbinic genealogies, and the family of Rav Shmuel Ben Natronai, the Rishon from whom the Margoliyos family ultimately descended, also came from this area of Languedoc, and the name Natronai is clearly from Bavel and exceedingly rare among Ashkenazi Jews. (I have only found it twice among Rishonim, and this is one of them)

Is there some proof to this or did the royals (formerly just rich guys) simply want to prove royalty so they latched on to Beis Dovid, as some have postulated?

Pretty clear that British and other European royalty is descended from the Angevins. Less clear their descent from Guillaume de Gellone, but probable.

On the other side, ancestries of the rashei galuta are also well known.

So the challenging part is the connection between the resh galuta natronai and the house of Machir/Gellone. There is circumstantial and some documentary evidence, as I described above, but it isn’t 100%.

On that note, neither is our tradition of Rashi’s family being descended from Dovid Hamelech. Even accepting the line to R’ Yochanan Hasandlar, the 30 generations from Hillel Hazaken to Shefatyah (I think) are undocumented. We have our mesorah, but as far as documentation goes, no.

It is definitely a momentous occasion in the life of the British nation. Also, possibly for citizens of the realms of Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc. The Monarchy is a stabilising influence on political and social life in Britain.

There was talk that Mrs Middleton, who’s maiden name is Goldsmith may have had Jewish roots. However, this has been disproven.

We now have 3 living direct heirs to the Throne for the first time since Queen Victoria’s time. I’m sure there will be a slight addition to ‘Hanosein Tshua’ this Shabbos.

May the Malchus shel Chesed continue to be benevolent to the yieden, until the time when we enter Malcus shel melech haMoshiach.

I personally feel that the royal baby is very special.

This should be an emotional time for all people living within the UK or the commonwealth.

He may be King one day and we should show the whole family a lot of respect and gratitude for helping lead the country with such passion and patriotism.

Klal Yisroel has a lot to be grateful for.

I really have no idea. But i think we should spend time thinking about other things than goyishe princes…

Because we’re human beings, with varying interests. Yes, I’m interested in the British Royal family. I’m also interested in planetary astronomy, photography, baseball, statistics, history, writing and other things as well.

Yes, you could rightly ask me “Why do you care about photography if you’re not a professional photographer? I couldn’t care less about it.” But you know what? I don’t have to conform to *your* likes and interests. I have my own, thank you very much, and I’m not required to answer to you as to what they are.

Why should anyone care about this baby more than any other baby? Besides, the mother is a commoner. You can be into it but its mamish shtus vehevel following this couple is no different than following any of the other non Jewish celebrities. They are just celebrities nothing more. Do you read EW too? At least the queen is someone respectable.

WIY – like I said before, it’s not cause they may be celebrities, it’s because this baby will be King on day and that’s why everyone make such a fuss over him. In the same way that the parents’ wedding was hyped up because Prince William is the future King. For your information, there was no fuss made over any of his cousins’ weddings, nor when they had children, because they are not in direct line to the throne.

To be honest, I am getting a little tired of repeating myself because people obviously don’t realise the significance of this event.
