It seems like the knee jerk reaction to someone wanting to marry someone good looking, or rich, or from a good family, is that they should look for someone with yiras shomayim.
Is it then true that the ugly poor people with horrible parents have more yiras shomayim?
Well, then maybe I want a terrible wife so that my kids will have more yiras shomayim. And that’s why I’m gunning for good looking one with oodles of cash.
February 3, 2014 4:15 pm at 4:15 pm #1002054☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantLol, when you do get married, popa, I suggest you don’t tell your mother in law your username, otherwise when she sees this post, she’ll disown you.
February 3, 2014 4:29 pm at 4:29 pm #1002055popa_bar_abbaParticipantI’ll be fine. Syag has already seen everything.
February 3, 2014 4:33 pm at 4:33 pm #1002056🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantI thought we agreed to keep this between us. You really ARE horrible.
February 3, 2014 4:41 pm at 4:41 pm #1002057☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantRight. That’s why she keeps on saying she’ll never let you go out with her daughter.
Take my advice on this one, popa. It’s not worth getting on your MIL’s bad side.
February 3, 2014 4:43 pm at 4:43 pm #1002058👑RebYidd23ParticipantIt depends if you consider me good-looking.

February 3, 2014 5:07 pm at 5:07 pm #1002060yungermanSParticipantyes actually they do have more yiraas shamayim, but based on a different reason.
with their low life style & low image they learn how to look at everything positive i.e. look at everything they have & not vice versa, everything they are missing like regular people,
& appreciate everything Hashem gives them every day.
to help you understand this better. here is an example:
February 3, 2014 5:08 pm at 5:08 pm #1002061Torah613TorahParticipantIsn’t there a story that R’ Yochanan said that if he was less handsome, he would have learned more Torah?
February 3, 2014 5:10 pm at 5:10 pm #1002062Little FroggieMemberI am ugly. Do I have Yiras Shomaim?
February 3, 2014 5:16 pm at 5:16 pm #10020632ND OPPINIONParticipantAll of the prophetesses were known to be beautiful… Some were wealthy too.
February 3, 2014 11:21 pm at 11:21 pm #1002064LevAryehMemberThis question makes no sense because I’m super good-looking and I have loads and loads of yiras shamayim.

February 4, 2014 3:30 am at 3:30 am #1002067HealthParticipantUgly people have more YS because they constantly question Hashem -Why me? Why me?
The more you talk to Hashem, the closer you become to him!
February 4, 2014 5:54 am at 5:54 am #1002068👑RebYidd23ParticipantNo, because the person who is considered ugly is fortunate to be behind his face and not facing it.
February 4, 2014 1:26 pm at 1:26 pm #1002069Little FroggieMemberrebyidd23:
Problem is I have to face that face every time I come in close proximity with a mirror. UCH!!
February 4, 2014 2:59 pm at 2:59 pm #1002070Trust 789MemberEvery person is beautiful. There are no ugly people. Only people who have bad middos are ugly. So the answer is no. The opposite. Ugly people are those that have no Yiras Shamayim.
February 4, 2014 3:04 pm at 3:04 pm #1002071Trust 789MemberYungermanS: Your post was beautiful except for this part:
Cell phones are a huge yetzer hara, and people love them. If people would have to be disconnected from their cell 8 hours every day (besides sleeping time), they would appreciate their life a whole lot more and realize that the cell is and should be used for convenience, and possibly it won’t take over their life like has happened to too many people.
February 4, 2014 3:23 pm at 3:23 pm #1002072popa_bar_abbaParticipantAre there also no short people? Only people who have small minds are short. So the answer is no. Short people are those who have no yiras shamayim.
And no poor people. Only those who have poor manners are poor.
And no sick people. Only those who have sick minds are sick.
And no stupid people. Only those who have stupid character are stupid.
And no dictionary meanings. Only those that sound cliche are dictionary.
February 4, 2014 3:39 pm at 3:39 pm #1002073Trust 789MemberShort people. You can measure a person’s height and look at a chart to determine if the person is short.
poor people – are people living in poverty poor? Their are guidelines for who falls under poverty level.
Sick people – A doctor will diagnose a sick person. Insurance has coverage for sick visit or well visit. there are hospitals for mentally ill.
Stupid people. There are measurements for IQ.
I have never ever heard of guidelines, measurements or levels for what constitutes ugliness. Facial ugliness is an opinion only.
February 4, 2014 4:17 pm at 4:17 pm #1002074👑RebYidd23ParticipantThere are many techniques which can be used to eliminate mirrors. I shattered mine by dropping them.
February 4, 2014 4:26 pm at 4:26 pm #10020752ND OPPINIONParticipantTrust- that is so true. “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.”
February 4, 2014 4:57 pm at 4:57 pm #1002076popa_bar_abbaParticipantThere are plenty of ways to measure ugliness in an objective fashion.
BMI, straightness of teeth, smoothness of face, relative size of nose, etc, etc, etc.
But that isn’t the point. Is the dictionary wrong on anything which can’t be measured through objective criteria? Would you say there is no bad tasting food, only distasteful people? Just because you can’t objectively measure whether it tastes bad means the dictionary definition is incorrect and you can substitute anyone you want?
February 4, 2014 5:00 pm at 5:00 pm #1002077Little FroggieMemberrebyidd23:
Again, that ugly face follows me around at all places, all halls where the walls are bedecked with mirrors. Should I go on a rampage and …
February 4, 2014 8:10 pm at 8:10 pm #1002078Trust 789MemberBMI, straightness of teeth, smoothness of face, relative size of nose, etc, etc, etc.
It’s a personal opinion. There are no rules for what constitute prettiness or ugliness. Some people think fat people are more beautiful than thin. You can not determine beauty by how wide the nose is, nor how smooth the skin is.
Would you say there is no bad tasting food,?
Yes, I would say so. All food that Hashem created is good (except if it’s bad for your health). A food can taste very sharp, very spicy, but bad? That is in a person’s personal taste. And I think we should all appreciate all the food Hashem gave us, and not call food bad. I don’t like liver, that doesn’t mean it tastes bad. Other people think it is delicious.
If you call a person ugly, there are others who might think that person is beautiful.
To call a person ugly, is an ugly think to do (even if it’s not to their face)
P.S. I know a few people who don’t have nice straight teeth, and they are gorgeous.
February 4, 2014 8:22 pm at 8:22 pm #1002079popa_bar_abbaParticipantI didn’t call anyone ugly, and I think you are correct that it is a subjective term. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
February 4, 2014 8:39 pm at 8:39 pm #1002080jewishfeminist02MemberA person can look ugly or beautiful depending on the perspective of the viewer. A trait that one person considers ugly may be beautiful in the eyes of another person.
However, there is no denying that there is such a thing as “conventional beauty”. I believe there have been scientific studies analyzing the criteria that make up a conventionally beautiful or classically handsome person.
February 4, 2014 9:13 pm at 9:13 pm #1002081Trust 789MemberI didn’t mean to imply that you called anyone ugly.
You asked “Do people who are uglier have more yiras shomayim?”
I would change that to, “Do people who think they are ugly have more yiras shomayim?”
Unfortunately, there are people who are actually beautiful that think they are ugly.

Even if the food is bad for your health it could still be good (in proportions). Like for simchas, Shabbos or Yom Tov.
In any case, this thread is clearly just a mockery/joke that PBA made, which people took way to seriously (the hashkafa was very nice and true, but PBA was not even close to serious- hence that fact he implied he doesn’t want to have kids who are yirei shamyim).
February 5, 2014 3:53 am at 3:53 am #1002083Torah613TorahParticipantPopa, so trolls have a lot of Yiras Shamayim?

There is no food that Hashem created that is unhealthy (unless an individual person is allergic to it). What’s unhealthy is how we go and prepare that food and ruin any healthy benefits it contained.
February 6, 2014 7:11 am at 7:11 am #1002085oyyoyyoyParticipantnew tactful way to say no to a girl, “she has to much yiras shamayim”
