Many Chassidish shuls have kiddush clubs, it’s not something exclusive for Modern Orthodox shuls. There are several shuls near my parents which are known for being basically hangouts for tuna beigels and other near-off the derech Chassidim. They all have unofficial kiddush clubs.
Funniest story was once when my brother overslept and ended up at the 9:30 shteibel minyan. Halfway through Chazaras Ha’Shatz Mussaf he realizes that there’s barely a minyan in shul. The rov stops the chazzan for a second, goes to a nondescript door in the back and bangs on it going “Nu? Nu?”. Door opens to a room packed with men, kugel, cholent and whiskey.

Oh do I want to join that shul
April 25, 2013 12:46 am at 12:46 am #9488572scentsParticipantSo your comparing MO to Chasiddishe hangouts?
April 25, 2013 3:07 pm at 3:07 pm #948858rationalfrummieMemberIn terms of having a kiddush club yes.
April 25, 2013 3:59 pm at 3:59 pm #9488592scentsParticipantSo lets put it this way, it is rare to have a kiddush club in a chasidishe shull. (unless its a near off chasiddishe or tuna beigle shull..)
April 25, 2013 4:18 pm at 4:18 pm #948860Yserbius123ParticipantI would say just the opposite, Chassidishe shuls are much more of a community center than Misnagdish shuls. Mispallelim feel very at home and I could say with absolute certainty that the vast majority of Chassidishe shuls I walked into on Shabbos had a large group of people eating and drinking in a separate room while davening was going on.
April 25, 2013 6:42 pm at 6:42 pm #9488612scentsParticipantYserbius123
This is not true, I have been to plenty Chassidishe shuls, I have not seen any eating and drinking while davening. especially not in any mainstream chasiddishe shul.
April 25, 2013 6:55 pm at 6:55 pm #948862Yserbius123Participant2scents: Really? Nobody standing by the coffee and cake when the chazzan is saying brachos? Nobody walking out early to get a bit of kugel? Nobody (on Yom Tov) sneaking into the smoking sukkah for a quick puff?
April 25, 2013 7:16 pm at 7:16 pm #948863WIYMemberYserb
I think you are talking about the smaller shtieblach and the more “cool” chassdish shuls. I think an actual chassidiusses shul like Bobov or Satmar is much more serious although I cant say for a fact because I dont Daven there but I have seen what goes on at certain Chassidish shuls so I know what you mean.
April 25, 2013 9:13 pm at 9:13 pm #9488642scentsParticipantI cannot recall seeing any cake in a shull during davening, OK maybe when there is a kiddush, they would bring it out at the end of mussaf.
I have davened in plenty of chasiddishe shulls, yet I have never been at a kiddush club. yes, I dont go to those near off chasidishe shulls..
Any decent and serious chasiddishe shull has no ‘events’ going on during davening.
You mentioned coffee, although coffee is not the subject here, I will agree that this is an ‘issue’ in a lot of chassidishe shull, but it is not an event, it only takes a few minutes to drink a coffee and is no way a social gathering.
April 29, 2013 2:28 pm at 2:28 pm #948865Yserbius123ParticipantI’m not talking about smaller shuls (although shtieblech definitely have that issue) I’m talking about the main shuls for various very big Chassiduses. I guess I can be dan l’kaf zchus and assume that those people davened at earlier minyanim, but in most of the Rebbish shuls I’ve seen, you are guaranteed to find at least two rooms where there is a minyan or more sitting around eating and drinking while the main davening is going on.
It’s simply inconceivable that a Chassidus where thousands are davening at their Rebbe that there *aren’t* a few dozen who sit it out. Combine that with the openness that Rebbish shuls usually have, being more of a community center than a shul/beis medrash.
April 29, 2013 2:54 pm at 2:54 pm #948866popa_bar_abbaParticipantOh my, kiddush club this week was awesome. We had a celebrity appearance, but I shan’t say who.
Booze: Dalwhinnie 15; Balvenie 14 (Caribbean cask)
Herring: Matjes herring, homemade by popa.
Crackers: Ritz.
Donuts: Yes, but not telling which; too identifying.
Cupcakes: Excellent ones, didn’t see whom by.
April 29, 2013 2:59 pm at 2:59 pm #9488672scentsParticipantSo now it has changed to a few sitting out from official kiddush clubs.
I have not met an official kiddush club in any mainstream chassidishe shull.
April 29, 2013 3:50 pm at 3:50 pm #948868HealthParticipantPBA – You must have a Minyan in your house and you speak during the Kiddush.
April 29, 2013 4:05 pm at 4:05 pm #948869popa_bar_abbaParticipantI wouldn’t want a minyan in my house, bec then I’d need to be on time.
April 29, 2013 4:08 pm at 4:08 pm #948870Daniel RosenMemberIt is the people who used to be reformed or conservative Jews and are now modern orthodox that join kiddish clubs for the most part.

No, that isn’t the case.
April 29, 2013 6:11 pm at 6:11 pm #948872☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantNo, it’s the alcoholics.
April 29, 2013 7:18 pm at 7:18 pm #948873Yserbius123Participant2scents: Sitting out, “official” Kiddush club, does it make a difference? Fact of the matter is a lot of people come to shul to socialize and drink during davening. In most shuls it’s not tolerated and all the food and drink is locked up until davening is over. In some old fashioned Modern Orthodox shuls, Chassidishe shteibels and Rebbishe batei k’nessiois it’s not only not discouraged, but there is a large enough and kavuah enough chevra to say that it’s almost encouraged.

Hmm, mine is not really any of those three.
December 4, 2019 9:23 am at 9:23 am #1807354RebbeDebbieParticipantWe have one at my current shul.
December 4, 2019 10:51 am at 10:51 am #1807395GadolhadorahParticipantCould someone explain the difference between Rebbishe batei k’nessiois and say small shtieblach in the home of a chabad shaliach?
December 4, 2019 11:41 am at 11:41 am #1807407Uncle BenParticipantWhat’s up with the 6 year gap, were all the Kiddush club members in alcohol induced comas?
December 4, 2019 11:41 am at 11:41 am #1807405☕️coffee addictParticipantMine too
Maybe we go to the same shul
December 5, 2019 12:26 pm at 12:26 pm #1808091hujuParticipantI have always considered any walkout of daveners right before or during the rabbi’s speech/sermon/devar Torah to be an insult to the rabbi. And so (regrettably in my opinion), as long as there are rabbis, there will be kiddush clubs.
