I was at a wedding with no band and no singer, instead there was a computerized music system with someone controlling it. The quality of the music was much better then a typical one man band, the dancing was very lively, and its for a fracture of the cost of a one man band and singer. (its oned by the hall so you dont need to rent it and shlep it each time).
Whats your toughts about that being the standard at all weddings?
March 24, 2011 7:52 pm at 7:52 pm #752640popa_bar_abbaParticipantI think it should be.
I think weddings should be in the shul’s social hall, with the meal in your house for immediate family and grandparents.

I hope it becomes the norm just after you take out a 5th mortgage to marry off your last kid.
Hee hee.

can you explain how it can be more expensive?
The hall owens the system, lets say the initial cost was $20,000 so you divide that for the next 500 weddings with a total of $40 per wedding, then you need a man to be there (dosent have to be a professional just needs to know how to use a mouse to change songs and volume as needed) for a cost of $25-$30 an hour so thats like $250 per wedding plus some mantenence and a markup for the hall so its like $500-$600 per wedding. how does that compare to the $2,000 mnimum that a one man band & singer cost?

You have a lot to learn about the art of spinning.

If you think it takes a professional to run the program I’m telling you it was a “kolel yungerman” who for the most part just sits there just in case a grandfather askes for a specific song when dancing, for the most part you just click “second dance” and it goes for the next hour changing smootly from song to song.
March 25, 2011 4:13 am at 4:13 am #752651GrandmasterMemberWhy not just bring a CD player with some nice CD’s for the wedding?
March 25, 2011 4:20 am at 4:20 am #752652deiyezoogerMemberI think the same thing but some people want to have the option on changing songs on demand and the quality of a DJ system is even better then a band. To bring along a CD is like bringing your own camara, it might take nice pictures but its not as good as a photagrapher, and you have to be busy taking pictures/running the music yourself instead of being busy welcoming your geusts.

deiyezooger’s idea, which had a lot of thought, time and money invested into making it so easy and un-costly, does not deserve to be downplayed.
March 25, 2011 4:30 am at 4:30 am #752654GrandmasterMembertbt: That’s a nice thought. But I wanted to know how deiyezooger’s idea is different than bringing various songs on a CD and playing them at the wedding at the appropriate time.

The CD DJ would do the changing of whichever CD’s.

Someone would be dedicated to controlling the CD’s and player just as in the idea in your OP. So no one would be distracted by the task.
March 25, 2011 4:52 am at 4:52 am #752656truth be toldMemberGrandmaster: There is no need to bring CD’s. Professional musicians prepared these “materials” and its available, i believe free of charge. It was done by people who want to help

If a Kollel Guy can do it and is just clicking on the next playlist, it isn’t.
Professional DeeJays are not cheaper than a one man band.

March 25, 2011 3:21 pm at 3:21 pm #752659anon1m0usParticipantA DJ is great, but if you are into music, watching the musician play is inspiring.
March 25, 2011 4:32 pm at 4:32 pm #752660truth be toldMemberanon1m0us: True. But people have to decide whether they would like to inspire their guests, or borrow money.
March 25, 2011 6:35 pm at 6:35 pm #752661anon1m0usParticipantListen to the cords of a violin being played or the keys on a piano, it is truly an amazing sound. Unfortunately, with my age comes the disdain of today’s load music playing at wedding where half of the guests are annoyed it is soo loud. So i agree, do not borrow money to make your guests miserable. If you plan on having an orchestra without drums or electric guitars, give me a call. I’d love to hear them play.

One of the first rules for quality sound is “never use the house audio system”.
March 27, 2011 2:18 am at 2:18 am #752664truth be toldMemberBezalel: Reality is, Shabbsy Parnes and others install their sound systems into halls when they are built. They usually allow their competitors to use it. If its the same deal here, then..
