I did! In the 1960s!
June 14, 2017 10:56 pm at 10:56 pm #1297029iacisrmmaParticipantWas it really named “after you? Maybe it was named “before you”?
June 14, 2017 10:57 pm at 10:57 pm #1297032JosephParticipantThey only name hurricanes after females. (I wonder why……….)
June 14, 2017 11:33 pm at 11:33 pm #1297038adocsParticipantJoseph
Incorrect. While that was once true, they currently alternate between male and female names. For example, the first several names for hurricanes in 2017 (if they form) will be
Arlene Bret Cindy Don Emily Franklin Gert Harvey
They even alternate the first name from year to year. The first name in 2018 will be male (Alberto)
June 14, 2017 11:58 pm at 11:58 pm #1297048JosephParticipantApparently the politically correct troopers couldn’t stomach the idea of female only named hurricanes.
But no one explained why for many decades they only used female names.
June 15, 2017 7:09 am at 7:09 am #1297060Ex-CTLawyerParticipantThe first ‘modern’ weather professional to name Hurricanes/tropical storms was in Australia and named Clement Wragge
He initially used the Hebrew and Greek Alphabet to name Cyclones and Typhoons, when he ran out of letters he switched to women’s names. His rationale is explained:
For tropical cyclones he chose women’s names
Particularly the “soft dulcet names of the dusky beauties of the South Sea Islands”
Hoped to encourage Australian women to name their daughters with these “pretty, bubbling” appellations rather than ‘Susan’ or ‘Jane’
Cyclones in the Pacific are what we call Hurricanes in the Atlantic. Wragge’s system spread worldwide in the professional weather community.June 15, 2017 8:30 am at 8:30 am #1297070Geordie613ParticipantAdocs, In the UK we don’t have hurricanes or tornadoes (we do have the airplane type, but not the weather ones). Our weather is far too proper for all that wind and water rushing around the place like American tourists. But we have started naming storms. It alternates between male and female names. I think this past winter we got as far as Angus, Barbara, Conor and Ewan. Yes, THE WHOLE WINTER!! 5 storms big enough to be named.
We just have our rain spread out equally throughout the winter ….. and summer.
June 15, 2017 8:30 am at 8:30 am #1297071👑RebYidd23ParticipantIf they use only female names, they’ll run out of names. The name of a major storm is ruined for babies. People don’t name their girls Katrina anymore.
June 15, 2017 8:40 am at 8:40 am #1297101JosephParticipantHow do all the existing Katrina’s handle the embarrassment?
June 15, 2017 9:16 am at 9:16 am #1297104Ex-CTLawyerParticipantThey won’t run out of names because they use a 6 year cycle to repeat names, only retiring names when there is a storm of scientific significance that will continue to be studied and taught about.
Thus Katrina was retired and won’t be back as scheduled in 2 years (if we reach K)June 15, 2017 9:16 am at 9:16 am #1297103👑RebYidd23ParticipantThey probably are known as Kat, Kate, Trina, or some other nickname.
June 15, 2017 9:29 am at 9:29 am #1297107JosephParticipantImagine being known as Katrina all your life when suddenly when you’re 50 years old, or 30 years old, you have to change to a nickname due to a hurricane.
June 15, 2017 9:29 am at 9:29 am #1297108👑RebYidd23ParticipantThey won’t actually run out of names, but they’ll run out of good ones.
June 15, 2017 9:59 am at 9:59 am #1297153LightbriteParticipantiacisrmma: By golly, you’re right!!!
June 15, 2017 10:00 am at 10:00 am #1297154cantthinkoffancyusernameParticipantI wonder which one is LB.
Tropical Storm One.
Hurricane Abby.
Tropical Storm Brenda.
Hurricane Cleo.
Hurricane Donna.
Tropical Storm Six.
Hurricane Ethel.
Tropical Storm Florence.June 15, 2017 10:00 am at 10:00 am #1297155LightbriteParticipantJoseph: Maybe some Katrina’s feel it helps people remember their name?
Next time I meet someone in the US, I want to introduce myself as “______ , you know, like the Hurricane of ______” ☺
Maybe it will help someone remember my name, even if he/she never heard of it prior to our meeting.
June 15, 2017 11:11 am at 11:11 am #1297273Avram in MDParticipantCTLAWYER,
Wragge’s system spread worldwide in the professional weather community.
Correct that he was the first; however, nobody else did it for decades after his retirement. The US government started naming tropical cyclones in 1953, largely to avoid confusion when there were multiple systems ongoing simultaneously. Currently, the US does not control the naming – it is done via 6 year rotating lists maintained by the World Meteorological Organization.
June 15, 2017 11:35 am at 11:35 am #1297276Avram in MDParticipantJoseph,
Imagine being known as Katrina all your life when suddenly when you’re 50 years old, or 30 years old, you have to change to a nickname due to a hurricane.
This may be an issue for some women and girls named Katrina who live along the central Gulf Coast, but probably not elsewhere.
June 15, 2017 12:27 pm at 12:27 pm #1297354apushatayidParticipantwhen will they starts with names like Aidel, Beinish, Genendel…..
