the omnipod is not that big forever1- its thinner than most cell phone and about the legnth of an egg (not as wide as an egg but you get what im saying…lol) when wearing tights or stockiins, it pushes it in so that it is invisible (….if you are not looking for it of course) the other part of it… the PDM is the size of a blackberry and everyone asssumes thats what it is when i am “playing” with it!
March 9, 2011 1:24 am at 1:24 am #980250allsgr8ParticipantThanks for clarifying coffefan cuz thats what I thought. You wear the pod on your legs? Does the PDM include a glucometer or do u need to have a seperate one?
March 9, 2011 2:58 am at 2:58 am #980251cofeefanMemberi wear the pod on my stomach most of the time, once in a while on my legs. i find it sticks better to the stomach and is more comft for me there too.
and yes it has a meter on the PDM! uses freestyle strips
March 9, 2011 6:22 am at 6:22 am #980253rebbitzenMemberHEY! WERE ON PAGE 2O!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YAY! I GOT IT THIS TIME!
March 9, 2011 6:24 am at 6:24 am #980254rebbitzenMemberDX3, thank you! i appreciate it. i hope they find a cure soon!..anyways, the thryoid is not really a big deal..i just take a pill for it. thats all..but its just ‘another problem’..so it gets me down sometimes..
March 9, 2011 4:23 pm at 4:23 pm #980255forever1MemberCofeefan thanks for clarifying, I was just basing my info from the way it looks, that’s why I was suggesting her to try them and actual see it up close. What do you do with the pdm at weddings? Shabbos when u go out?
Hopefully by the time ill be able to get a new pump they’ll have the cgm integration:).
March 9, 2011 8:30 pm at 8:30 pm #980256dx3Memberreb- well keep up the good work.
forever1- i was part of a research group that was trying to intergrate the pump with a cgm. so hold on tight
March 10, 2011 1:33 am at 1:33 am #980257cofeefanMemberforever1- i dont really go out on shabbos but when i do its just for a short time so i leave it home and dont eat wherever i go or just correct when i come home (i dont use the PDM on shabbos as a general thing i use shots…..) and for weddings i give a time release/extended blous (another gr8 feature but i think a lot of pumps have that)i can say how long i want it to drag out for so that way by the time the meal comes its basically all given already. sometimes i have to drink something sugary before the meal comes bec i drop a bit with the insulin without food…. but that doesnt always happen. and then i leave the PDM in my coat or in the bathroom in the corner if its the summer…
its great bec the PDM doesnt need to be close to the pod all the time. only when programming a bolus! so i can leave it wherever i want…..
dx3- i am WAITING for the CGMS combo with omnipod!!! i wish i knew how long we have to wait!!!!!
reb- my ENTIRE family has thyroid issues so i asked my doc abt it and she said that diabetics are at a higher risk for thyroid problems. so dont worry its connected…. but i understand what you are feeling….. i’m waiting for my thyroid issues to start lol….. i feel so left out from my family being the only one with normal thyroid! 😉
March 10, 2011 2:38 am at 2:38 am #980258rebbitzenMemberyea, supposedly all auto immune diseases are connected..i have so far three..hopefully that will be it. (diabetes, celiac, hypothyroid)
March 10, 2011 2:42 am at 2:42 am #980259dx3Membercofeefan- we asked a rov and he told us that you could use the remote on shabbos. also i have my pump (medtronic) clipped on to my belt which is also ok, so wherever i go (even to kiddushim) i am covered.
about integrading a cgm with the pump, they told us the an ifusion site can only be in you at most for three days, as apposed to the cgm which can be in you for a week (since there is no flow of liquid). so the companies don’t want to intergrade them bec. you eill have to change the whole set after three days when the cgm part can be in for a week. so it all boils down to MONEY!!!!!! 🙂
March 10, 2011 2:44 am at 2:44 am #980260dx3Memberrebbitzen – what are the symtoms, if there are any , of hypothyroid?
March 10, 2011 3:38 am at 3:38 am #980261allsgr8ParticipantDx3- i think with hypothyroid one of the major symptoms that someone will notice at first is weight gain because of a slowed down metabolism. Also hair loss and dry skin.
Btw everyone here seems to be very into the CGM. Is there something wrong with me that I dont want it? lol I think ill end up becoming obsessed with my numbers and will probably end up correcting for highs all day and then be low…
March 10, 2011 4:43 am at 4:43 am #980262cofeefanMemberdx3- i also asked a shayla and was also told that its totally fone to use it on shabbos but i dont feel comfortable. of course if i have to i wont think twice about using it! there is no question!! but if i can use a syringe i might as well not touch the buttons… thats just the way i feel i am prob being silly because i could use the PDM….
as far as the cgms…. i personally would thinkit’s worth it to have both even if i have to change it every 3 days… thats what i am doing with the omnipod now…. when i wear the sensor my skin btreaks out from wearing the adhesive fore longer than 3 days anyways so i a lot of times take it off soon after that anyway…. i guess time will tell…..
allsgr8- i am the same way which is why i only wear it for one week every 6 weeks or so because i HATE seeing it go up even though its supposed to… but i like seeing how the basal rates are. its a great thing to have i didnt think id like it but for once in a while i really think it helps me understand D better… you can try one from ur doc prob……
March 10, 2011 6:15 am at 6:15 am #980263rebbitzenMembermy symptoms were not that of weight gain and hair loss…i was just extremely tired…i actually was pretty skinny when i was diagnosed…:)
March 10, 2011 5:02 pm at 5:02 pm #980264allsgr8Participantrebbitzen- interesting that you only had that symptom… either way may you be healthy iyh ad me’ah v’esrim! (and find the right boy very very soon iyh!!!)
March 11, 2011 2:16 am at 2:16 am #980265rebbitzenMemberAMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! to you too! (and e/o else here)
March 11, 2011 3:08 am at 3:08 am #980266cofeefanMemberanyone have any ideas how i could lose weight quickly?! crash diets are not for diabetics and i cant do a ton of exercise either
March 11, 2011 3:18 am at 3:18 am #980267allsgr8Participantreb- AMEN!
Cofeefan- Sorry there’s no such thing as losing weight quickly 🙁 Even crash diets dont work for long so dont feel bad that you cant do them. The only way to really lose weight is to do it slowly and make it last. 45 minutes of exercise and three wholesome meals a day with 8 cups of water and absolutely no snacks (unless u go low- which of course always happens to me when Im on a diet!) works best for me!
Plain yogurt with fresh blueberries for breakfast
salad with a protein for lunch (small carb if you want)
Protein and lots of veggies for dinner.
Dont forget 8 cups of water!!
March 11, 2011 3:20 am at 3:20 am #980268HealthParticipantCF – That is the job of the Diabetes Educator. They will tell you what to eat and what not. They should give you an exact food plan.
Call him/her.
March 11, 2011 4:21 am at 4:21 am #980269cofeefanMemberallsgr8- thats what i eat now… except therea coffee for breakfast and ww pita with lunch of salad and tuna. and i also have a fruit in between. i am so frustrated with the world right now. if im not a size 2 i am considered fat. ot doesnt matter if i am healthy and a good person im fat so i obviously i dont care about myself….. so now i have to go on a big diet even when i eat healthy as is….
March 11, 2011 5:14 am at 5:14 am #980270allsgr8Participantcofeefan- Oy dont think like that..it may be true that to many people weight is everything but you dont want to marry such a person. The man you will marry will not want to marry a girl who’s a size 2 (and neither will his mother!) he’ll want to marry you for what YOU are, for your sensitivity, your kindheartedness, your maturity…. Always remember that, and dont forget that hashem knows exactly what you need in a husband and you will not get anything less than that. He takes care of all of us and wont make you wait even one extra minute for prince charming to come along and take you under his wing!! 🙂 May it be VERY VERY VERY soon to the right boy in the right time!!! Hang in there
March 11, 2011 2:10 pm at 2:10 pm #980271cofeefanMemberthank you for your chizuk! you always know what to say allsgr8!!!
but im not talking just for shidduchim. (though its a huge part!!) people are so insensitive! it always bothers me how they think that the diabetes comes from being not exactly the perfect size/weight. im not saying im a normal weight but im not massive! i wish they would learn the difference between the 2 types so that i dont have to keep explaing it. when i was diiagnosed 9 years ago i was under 100 pounds and way too skinny! now its just my genes that causes me to be the way i am! i eat very healthy i exercise but im never gonna be a size 2 or even close to that! im fine with that id rather be healthy. but im sick and tired of people thinking that im not because they are ignorant to what diabetes really is! (and just btw i am not massively overweight its insane how people think!)
March 11, 2011 4:55 pm at 4:55 pm #980272allsgr8ParticipantCoffean- Oh I see…I would totally feel the same way! it’s noone business to figure out exactly why you have diabetes and how you can “get rid of it” yeah right! …Thats also a reason why im happy my friends dont know about my diabetes cuz they would always be looking at what I am eating and making comments and totally NOT UNDERSTANDING the whole concept! Ignorance it bliss but not when you’re the subject of other people’s ignorance!
March 14, 2011 1:28 am at 1:28 am #980273dx3Memberi did hear that insulin causes one to have a bigger appetite.
March 14, 2011 3:24 am at 3:24 am #980274cofeefanMemberthats interesting…. is there also a thing that diabetics also have a harder time losing weight or is that just me?
March 15, 2011 4:23 am at 4:23 am #980275cofeefanMemberso frustrating!! i had 5 lows today!!! why? because im not eating enough carbs… why?? because im trying to lose weight… why??? because we live in a crazy world that you have to be a size-2 to be considered pretty!! but because of the diabetes i keep having lows so i keep having to eat something but it wont stay up!so i keep having to eat! i am BEYOND frustated!!!! why is it so much harder for diabetics to lose weight?!?!
ok i feel better now just venting lol
March 15, 2011 4:06 pm at 4:06 pm #980276rebbitzenMemberimo anochi batzara!
March 18, 2011 4:44 am at 4:44 am #980277dx3Membercofeefan – i feel so bad that you are having a hard time. today i was 62 and 61 at different parts of the day and it was the ta’anis…and in the middle i am in the 300’s… help

March 18, 2011 5:30 am at 5:30 am #980278rebbitzenMemberdx3, you fast on these fasts? I only do yom kippur! thats what i was told diabetics should do.
March 18, 2011 11:48 am at 11:48 am #980279Elisha-ben-avuyahMemberChance:
Autism and ADD are NOT man made diseases.
All the medical and psychological research indicates a genetic basis for both.
ADD and Diabetes have something in common. Although both have a genetic basis, their symptoms can be ameliorated through behavioral and environmental factors. Certain diseases involve a genetic proclivity or susceptivity, which in the presence of environmental factor result in the disease. For example, if someone with the genetic predisposition to diabetes ex revises, eats properly and monitors his health, he is unlikely to develop diabetes. Although ADD is genetic, that does not mean that a child or adult for that matter, cannot learn to develop focus.
Further, the idea that autism is caused by vaccinations has been disproven over and over again. Vaccinations have made polio and measles and many other diseases dissappear.

March 18, 2011 6:48 pm at 6:48 pm #980281YW Moderator-80Memberi have no idea where elishas post has come from
there was an autism thread on which the poster “chance”, whom elisha is referring to, promulgated that vaccines cause autism. chances last post was in the beginning of november.

March 21, 2011 2:27 am at 2:27 am #9802852qwertyParticipantAsk your doctor about Victoza, its not for everyone, there is a risk, and mostly only for type 2 but you might be surprised how well it works.
People say it works better than insulin and helps with weight loss.
March 21, 2011 4:19 pm at 4:19 pm #980286TheGoqParticipantdoes anyone know where u can get sugar free chocolates for pesach?
March 21, 2011 4:45 pm at 4:45 pm #980287always hereParticipantGoq~ Oh Nuts!
March 21, 2011 4:48 pm at 4:48 pm #980288HealthParticipantGoq – The store. And if they don’t have it under the candy aisle, they will have it under the baking aisle.
March 21, 2011 5:38 pm at 5:38 pm #980290gr82bagrandmaMemberdx3
There is a raisin bread called Ezekiel’s bread, made by Food for Life. It is made with no flour, only from sprouted wheat. I’m not sure about the gluten level but it is quite tasty & low glycemic. They also sell English muffins. It is in the freezer section of Pomegranate.
Pomogranate also has a soy pasta that is incredible. It is low calorie and almost carb free. I use it for EVERYTHING, icluding lukshen kugel, vegetarian (I eat only vegan)meatballs & spaghetti, etc.
I hope this is helpful.

March 22, 2011 2:23 am at 2:23 am #980294HealthParticipantGoq – What- you think you can’t eat baking choclate? If it’s too hard -melt it in a pot.
March 22, 2011 3:25 am at 3:25 am #980295rebbitzenMembergr82beagrandma-im soooooooooooo jealous! (and happy for you)..i’m PETRIFIED to take my a1c. My doctor gets so mad and nervous for me to get married (not that it looks like i’m getting to that stage any time soon-with all the suggestions pouring in.(not 🙁 ) but how do you do it!?
March 22, 2011 3:27 am at 3:27 am #980296rebbitzenMemberalso, whats with the new thread on a1c’s?
March 22, 2011 3:28 am at 3:28 am #980297rebbitzenMemberMAZEL TOV..WE HAVE HIT 1000 POSTS! (I’M WAITING TO BE ON PAGE 21) 🙂
March 22, 2011 3:29 am at 3:29 am #980298rebbitzenMemberHURRAY! WELCOME TO PAGE 21! LOL
March 22, 2011 3:58 am at 3:58 am #980299dx3Membercongrats on hitting over 1000 posts!!!!!!!!!!!!! (ken yirbu)
i did try to fast, but didn’t make it. usually on yom kippur and t’ be’av (at least till chatzos) i do fast the whole thing but i do test every two hours. if i am below 100 or rapidly going down i will suspend the pump. i also decrease my basal (like mosh3 said he does). but as a teen i did not fast even on yom kipper (if i had to eat i would eat less than a kezayis every 9 minutes)
i also have to learn to take a drink of sugar when i have a low and then wait about 15 minutes for it to react. if not, i will eat the whole fridge which of course causes me to go high. tough cycle.
March 22, 2011 4:15 am at 4:15 am #980300dx3Membermy a1c is 7.2.
once i got the pump my a1c went from around 6.5 to 7.2 because the pump is supposed to knock out the lows. this is because the variability is less (which is very good for the body)
2qwerty-what is “victoza” and what does it do?
