rebbitzen – We’ve been posting since page 1.
Actually it’s embarrassing for us- we’re like such yentas, and I’m not even a female.
February 27, 2011 9:07 pm at 9:07 pm #980199cofeefanMemberlol health youre not yentas u are caring and knowledgable and u want to help! i dont see anything embarassing=] its nice!
February 27, 2011 10:20 pm at 10:20 pm #980200rebbitzenMembertotally not embarrasing! so you could be a ‘macher’..not a yenta if that makes you feel better..
February 28, 2011 1:30 am at 1:30 am #980201HealthParticipantCF- Thanks.
Rebbitzen – I’d rather be called a yenta; my personality is so NOT “Macher” type!
February 28, 2011 4:17 am at 4:17 am #980202rebbitzenMemberthen yenta it is!
February 28, 2011 4:50 am at 4:50 am #980203Bar ShattyaMemberI recently became better frinds with a diabetic. His closer friends taught me how to take his blood when he is stone drunk.
February 28, 2011 7:56 pm at 7:56 pm #980205dx3Memberrebitzen- yes you got that right. there are tree of us who have D. we live D
February 28, 2011 8:34 pm at 8:34 pm #980206tralalaMemberNebech your wife ;-), she’s left out…
February 28, 2011 9:23 pm at 9:23 pm #980207dx3Memberi know, we told her that (but i dont think that she is jealous). in our house we have a club. the D CLUB. ?”? WE TRY TO HAVE A GOOD ATTITUDE
February 28, 2011 10:57 pm at 10:57 pm #980208rebbitzenMemberyea, definitely not worth being jealous of not being in that club! but thats so nice that you make it “fun” for your children…
February 28, 2011 11:24 pm at 11:24 pm #980209cofeefanMemberdx3 i admire your ATTITUDE!!!! it isnt easy living with D but you seem to be making the best of it! its really nice to hear all your positiveness!!
March 1, 2011 12:12 am at 12:12 am #980210rebbitzenMembercofeefan-random question but what does the thing under your name mean-leaves off the f for frumkeit?
March 1, 2011 12:21 am at 12:21 am #980211dx3Memberi can “go on and on and on…”, but the truth is its my wife who is the ceo of this club. it really had to do with that when i got D 18 years ago my family was behind me and i didn’t have to hide behind every pole to hide it. those who knew, knew, and i wasn’t restricted in anything (except for the fact that everybody had to taste my dietetic stuff).
and remember always, lifes your attitude
motivation determines what you do, attitude determines how you do it (in this case D wasn’t a choice)
anyways you guys are a great bunch, and you guys give me a lot of chizuk.
March 1, 2011 12:46 am at 12:46 am #980212cofeefanMemberreb- they were giving out subtitles in a thread a few weeks back so i asked for one thats what mod 88 gave me…. i spelled coffee with one f instead of two (porposely….. it WASNT a mistake…..) idk what the frumkeit has to do with anything and to be honest i dont like it very much but wtvr it is…… =)
dx3- “motivation determines what you do, attitude determines how you do it”
i love that…. thanx so much for saying it…. i’m gonna glue that to the back of my PDM and testing meter and every time i feel upset or down abt D i’m gonna look at it and get chizuk!! thanks!
March 1, 2011 4:08 am at 4:08 am #980213dx3Memberthanks cofeefan =)
March 1, 2011 4:31 am at 4:31 am #980214rebbitzenMemberinteresting cofeefan..you probably could ask them to take it off..i wasnt sure if it meant like youre so frum so you leave off a “f” or what..:O)
March 2, 2011 2:41 am at 2:41 am #980215dx3Memberhow do you measure the carbs in cholent?
March 2, 2011 4:38 am at 4:38 am #980216cofeefanMemberi dont eat cholent but i would say measure the amount you want. lets say a cup…. then figure out how much beans/barley is in that portion and see how many carbs is in that amount. ie: if ur portion if 75% beans/barley that would be like 3/4 of a cup combined.. which i would say is like 40ish carbs (i know a full cup of kidney beans is 40 carbs im not sure about barley though….. so thats why i would assume its around 40) then facture in the potatoes….. basically i would say take each ingredient seperatly…. its all a “game” of trail and error…. im sorry i cant be a real help to u!!
March 2, 2011 4:51 am at 4:51 am #980217allsgr8ParticipantI dont eat that much chulent, probably around 1/2 cup and I count about 30-40 carbs
March 2, 2011 4:57 am at 4:57 am #980218rebbitzenMemberi think e/ week i give a different bolus for cholent. i still don’t know exactly how much it is…but we just hope for the best 🙂
March 3, 2011 1:49 am at 1:49 am #980219dx3Memberthank you all for the advice. i usually guess by looking at it and then check myself about three hours later and if i need i give myself a correction. however for my kids since they weigh a little less than me, so they are much more sensitive than i. if we measure a few carbs off they will be over 300. most of their foods are measured to the gram, so its pretty difficult to measure cholent. what we do is only give them the potatoes and weight them. 5 grams per ounce.our cholent doesn’t have barley, my daughter has ciliac (yes add it to the fun).
March 3, 2011 5:43 am at 5:43 am #980220rebbitzenMemberhey! i have celiac too! plus diabetes! we should be friends! we put rice in instead!
March 3, 2011 8:33 pm at 8:33 pm #980221dx3Memberrebbitzen-thats right we do make a rice cholent too. what do you eat to fill youself up. my daughter seems to have a bottomless pit.
March 4, 2011 4:37 am at 4:37 am #980222rebbitzenMemberoysh…so i have challah from heaven mills, and then fish that has no matzah meal, then cholent, and kugels, and salad…really e/t we have, we make a gluten free substitute for me too…i thought i was the only one with diabetes and celiac! my thyroid aint too good either..:*(
March 6, 2011 7:21 am at 7:21 am #980223rebbitzenMemberpeoples! our forum was not even on the page! i had to go retreive it! where is e/o?!
March 6, 2011 5:08 pm at 5:08 pm #980224cofeefanMembersorry reb!!! thanks for rescuing it!!!
some1 just asked me an interesting question…..
what feels worse? being very high or being very low?
i didnt know what to answer. what do you all think?
March 6, 2011 6:29 pm at 6:29 pm #980225allsgr8ParticipantFor me feeling low is worse! I think if I had to find the worst part about having D it would probably be the feeling of being low ….
When you say high do you mean like ketoacidic? or just regular high cuz that doesnt really feel like anything …maybe a bit airy headed or s/t
March 6, 2011 8:06 pm at 8:06 pm #980226rebbitzenMemberlow feels worse immediately. high feels worse for a while. once you eat suagar, the low doesn’t feel so bad..but high-i can be dizzy and light headed for a while 🙁
March 6, 2011 8:23 pm at 8:23 pm #980227yossi z.MemberCeliac, thyroid, and diabetes are three things that I have learned about due to family having them though of all three I know most about diabetes.
From what I have seen, being low looks like it feels worse and being high doesn’t feel as bad but lasts longer
😀 Zuberman! 😀
March 6, 2011 8:47 pm at 8:47 pm #980228HealthParticipantThere are critical limits in both directions. We in the medical field don’t like either. Don’t let yourself go to either extreme.
But I think -it’s much, much easier to treat a low than the high.
March 6, 2011 9:08 pm at 9:08 pm #980229cofeefanMemberi agree with you health- both r extremely dangerous!! i was talking abt being very high. i think its easier to treat a low too.
for me i think being very high feels worse. because i get extremely nauseous tired dizzy etc and it lasts way too long. being low is also very bad i get soooo disoriented and i cant think but as soon as i get even a little sugar in my system it starts to fade. not so for high- it takes abt an hour for the insulin to take effect. bith r gross in my opinion!!!
March 7, 2011 3:12 am at 3:12 am #980230rebbitzenMemberdoes anyone else have any other diseases? i got loads!
March 7, 2011 5:30 pm at 5:30 pm #980231allsgr8ParticipantRebbitzen- bh no
I’m starting to “consider” the pump..just considering no drastic steps here 🙂 What do you all suggest. Which one is the best? What is your experience with certain pumps?
Also, how long do you think it takes to get used to the pump? is it just a couple of weeks or more like months?
Thanks
March 8, 2011 1:47 am at 1:47 am #980232dx3Memberreb- going back to the celiac, my daughter is 5 and trying to find a bread the tastes good is almost impossible. i think i bought almost every type of bread even dr. goldmans almond bread (~$14.00) and i ended up eating it. the best ine yet is katz’s white bread, which sometines goes when toasted.
what’s with the thyroid? (it must be tough, i feel for you, my wife knows someone (12th grade)who also has thyroid issues)
cofeefan- if i’m high enough that i get keytones then high is worse. but otherwise i think low is worse
allsgr8- i got the pump about 4 years ago. i say that i am totaly more flexable but you are always connected to something, so sleeping i feel like i am in utero wrapped in an umbilical cord. hidding it can be a little more tricky but workable. it took me a while to get used to it.
i am on a medtronic pump and my kids are on animas. i find that the animas can deliver in smaller increments (1/40 of a unit),where the medronic delivers 1/20 of a unit.
however i go with the medronic because its simpler to use.
March 8, 2011 2:12 am at 2:12 am #980233cofeefanMemberallsgr8- yay! considering is a huge step! i’m all for the omnipod… its discreet and for you, having no one know and wanting it to be a secret i think thats a huge plus for you. its very easy to learn how to use it and has a lot of great features. i love that it has a built in food database with calories and carbs etc for a lot of food! it does have its issues, all pummps do! i think that it sometimes has a lot of occlusions if you dont do exactly what ur supposed to but the costumer service is FABULOUS!! they send ppl down to help you and their phone service is great too! i have pulled it out a couple of times buut that is the same with any pump infusion sets!
whatever you chose just make sure that YOU are happy with it and that you are confident in using it! gluck in ur decision!!
March 8, 2011 2:22 am at 2:22 am #980234allsgr8Participantthanks Dx3 and cofeefan!!
cofeefan- like u mentioned i think that omnipod sounds the best as per the “secretive issue”. However, what do u mean by lots of occlusions? and what kind of “issues” have you had with it?
Also, did u use other pumps before- how would u compare the omnipod pros and cons?
Thanks..sorry for the list of Q’s 🙂
March 8, 2011 3:48 am at 3:48 am #980235dx3Memberallsgr8- if you really want to, try out the omnipod at the dr. office. they have fake ones that you can attach to yourself to see how it feels.
whatever you do, you will see that you can be much more in control, and that makes you feel great.
March 8, 2011 4:08 am at 4:08 am #980236rebbitzenMemberdx3, i have hypo thyroid! i was once saying like 3 parts of my body don;t work! but then i was thinking abt the hundreds of other parts that do..so that keeps me happy(ish)…and for bread, the only one that i found which is good is the glutino bagels. its cholov stam. it needs to be toasted of course..but they happen to be very good.
March 8, 2011 4:33 am at 4:33 am #980237dx3Memberrebbitzen- the bagels are milchigs? or are they like ou-de.
i feel so bad for you. i will daven for you. i was going through myself the other day and i have issues from top to bottom, but i remembered that it’s the challenges that we overcome that makes us great (just like by avraham avinu), and it sounds like you are doing great. keep up the good work.
March 8, 2011 4:33 am at 4:33 am #980238cofeefanMemberallsgr8- and occlusion is when the pump for some reason has an air bubble or the tube is bent so it blocks insulin delivery. my issues all had to do with that. its weird i could have like 3 occlusions in a row (SUCH a waste on insulin but i started taking some of it out…. thats a diff story;) and then not have another one for months! BH bli ayin hara i have not had an occlusion in prob 3 months!!! i learned where i can put it that doesnt have scar tissue under the skin cuz thats makes a lot of occlusion probs. and also a few difff tricks, like pushing the bottom of the pod down while it injects itself (another HUGE plus btw… all you have to do is push some buttons and it inserts the tube itself…) there are a lot of hints that you learn with ANY pump over time. remember that anything is gonna be different and therefore difficult to adjust to.
before the omnipod i was on the deltec cosmoniter. i was so thrilled with that. it was big and bulky and i didnt like the long wire it had. before that was the animas pump but that was at least 6 years ago! might have been one between there too…. i cant remember. i have been on the omnipod for 3 yrs now so even if i did rememebr the products well it wouldnt really be helpful if i list them because technology moves sooo fast that the pumps now are so different than the ones a few years back! sorry! but i know abt the omnipod lol!
March 8, 2011 4:41 am at 4:41 am #980239dx3Memberabout the clogging the medtronic insertion that i have never gave me a problem. the cannula (the part that goes into you) goes in to you at a 90 degree angle, as apposed to others that go in on a slant which can cause kinking (clogging). also i have not had a problem with scarring
March 8, 2011 5:13 am at 5:13 am #980240cofeefanMemberi unfortunatly have massive scarring issues for some reason. i have to roatate the site from one place to the total opposite side otherwise its a mess lol
March 8, 2011 3:50 pm at 3:50 pm #980241forever1MemberHi there! Allsg8 abt the pump, I have the medtronic, the great thing abt it is the integrated cgm, it’s the best thing ever. You should really not worry abt the secretive issue, you’ll see it’s so not a problem once you get used to it, whatever pump you go with you’ll have no problem hiding. Personally I wear mine in my tights on my thigh, ii know of girls that wear it in their slip.
All these companies come down to your house to show you their products. If your thinking abt the omnipod try wearing the dummy pod for a few days and see how descret it feels. IMHO it’s more of a challenge to hide than the traditional pumps since it’s not so easy to rotate and you always need to carry a separate bigger device, the controller.
Whatever you go with you’ll love! It does take a good few weeks to get used to…. Gluck!!
March 8, 2011 4:24 pm at 4:24 pm #980242allsgr8Participantcoffefan- thanks for the explanation!!
Forever1- I cant imagine that it could be easier to hide that big medtronic than a little pod. What if u wear a t-shirt dont u see the wiring or in a dress dont u see the pump bulging out?
March 8, 2011 4:59 pm at 4:59 pm #980243rebbitzenMemberthank you dx3! i wish i can give you my tehillim name without telling you and the rest of the internet who i am..:( and yes, the bagels are milchigs. I dont know if you keep cholov stam, but they are excellent. havent found anything this good in all my celiac years (8 years)
March 8, 2011 7:42 pm at 7:42 pm #980244forever1MemberAllsgr8 I guess you haven’t seen the pump up close, it’s not too much bigger than the pod. It’s a smaller than todays average cell phones. To give you the exact measurements it’s 3 1/2″ by 2″ by 3/4″ wide. Besides if you keep in you thigh or slip the small size differences doesn’t matter. Just from the pics the pod looks bulky to me. The best idea would be to try them, see them up close and decide from there.
Don’t worry you’ll love whatever you get. I was also very concerned abt the discreetness, it so not an issue once you find the right place for it.
March 8, 2011 7:46 pm at 7:46 pm #980245forever1MemberOh and neither wiring nor the pump shows through clothing, (considering the fact that you dont wear extremely fitted cloths;))
March 8, 2011 8:16 pm at 8:16 pm #980246allsgr8ParticipantI guess your right I should probably try them both out and take it from there. Thanks for all of your help and suggestions!! Now I have to try to get an appointment with my doc..an impossible task 🙂
March 8, 2011 8:33 pm at 8:33 pm #980247dx3Memberallsgr8- i dont think you have to get an appointment to try out the omnipod dummy. if you can get through to the D educator they should be able to get a dummy right away to try out.
it took 14 years of syringes to finally make the switch, and i don’t regret it.
reb- i davended for you anyway. hashem knows who you are (i daven for all D in general). also what do you do about your thyroid?
March 8, 2011 11:42 pm at 11:42 pm #980248allsgr8Participantdx3- Wow 14 yrs! Im only D for 3 years and everyone’s trying to convince me to make the switch!
I want to meet with my doc bec I never discussed the pump with her at all and she would probably have some good advice as to which pump would work best for me..I only me the D educator once and she doesnt really know me so I think the doc wld be the best person to speak to about it
