February 21, 2011 4:58 pm at 4:58 pm #980150allsgr8ParticipantWelcome dx3!! Did you try Dr. kazachkova at maimonidies? She’s part of Dr Ten’s group. If you want her phone number let me know.
Just curious..Are you male or female? What does your doc have to say about genetics?
February 21, 2011 5:38 pm at 5:38 pm #980151HealthParticipantRebbitzen – First come -first serve.
February 21, 2011 6:38 pm at 6:38 pm #980152tralalaMemberi guess dx3 is male, that’s what the statistics say…
February 21, 2011 7:56 pm at 7:56 pm #980153rebbitzenMemberwell! i guess i’ll have to be more on top of it! man!
February 21, 2011 8:21 pm at 8:21 pm #980154dx3Memberhi again, tralala guessed right. I am a male! When we got married, almost 7 yrs ago they told us it is not genetic. Now I don’t know what to believe. Still, it doesn’t seem so common for a diabetic parent to have 2 children with D
allsgr8- thanks, we are actually using Maimonidies now. But Dr. Jacobson left :(, then Neesha left 🙁 :(, we really relied on her amazing care. Wtih little kids, and having met Dr. K I just don’t think its a good shidduch.
cofeefan-I actually started out in Mount Sinai w/ Dr. Greg, and then Dr. Rapaport. But now with insurance….
February 21, 2011 9:00 pm at 9:00 pm #980155cofeefanMemberdx3- what about dr. wallach? thats who i use. is the problem with insurance with all of mount sinai or just those doctors? i personally didnt like the Maimonidies group tehy didnt fit with me when i tried them (but that was 5 years ago…) the 1 appointment i had with Dr. Ten was HORRIBLE i would NEVER go back.
i started with Dr. Anhalt who was AMAZING!!!!!! best doc i ever had! but then he moved=(.
out of curiousity. what point did you tell your wife when you were dating about the D? thats something we are all nervous about. i know its a little different for you because you are male but the idea is the same……
February 21, 2011 9:02 pm at 9:02 pm #980156allsgr8ParticipantYes. Dr. K is a bit tough, maybe too tough for little kids ..I guess at my age its better if she’s that way 🙂
February 22, 2011 3:01 am at 3:01 am #980157dx3Membercofeefan, about the dating issue i spoke to my rebbi about it and he advised me that at date three or four depending on how things are going. To tell you the truth i was a little nervous about it however i said to myself that the right one will be the one who will accept me as is(now she is managing three cases!). to tell you the truth not one girl who i had told said no because of the D. so dont worry.
allsgr8 at one point we offered Dr. k to take care of our two year old for the day. try getting a toddler to eat a specific amount of carbs every day and it should be the SAME FOOD EVERY DAY at the same time of day. (of course she declined!)
February 22, 2011 4:01 am at 4:01 am #980158plonyMemberhi dx3- hope u dont mind my asking: does everyone know about you and your childrens D or do you keep it private?
February 22, 2011 5:02 am at 5:02 am #980159cofeefanMemberthanks dx3 that really made me feel more at ease about it! your completely right when you say “the right one will be the one who will accept me as is” thanks so much!
February 22, 2011 8:45 am at 8:45 am #980160forever1MemberCoffeefan, how is the service at mt Sinai? I was with Rappaport for yrs and his cde Lauretta. The service iis that office was really terrible, they only had appointments a yr ahead and when it came to rx it took forever. Dr. Rappaport knows his work tough, although he does have his things. At that time he was not so for the pump….
February 22, 2011 3:05 pm at 3:05 pm #980161cofeefanMemberi love Dr. Wallach. shes really nice and she also knows her stuff but she makes you feel like you know better than she does which to me is very important. yes it is VERY hard to make appointments 9especially cuz i can only go first thing in the morning) so i set up 2 appointments in advance ( i just went last week and now i have appointments through december) otherwise i think i am happy with everything else there
February 22, 2011 4:37 pm at 4:37 pm #980162rebbitzenMemberim positive we discussed this already, but i can’t remember, and i have no patience to start looking thru e/t….someone just wanted to redt me to a guy who just was diagnosed with diabetes. Is that really a prob?
February 22, 2011 4:40 pm at 4:40 pm #980163allsgr8ParticipantWelcome back forev1! Was wondering where you’ve been… 🙂
February 22, 2011 5:42 pm at 5:42 pm #980164cofeefanMemberi dont think its a smart idea to be honest……
February 22, 2011 6:01 pm at 6:01 pm #980165allsgr8ParticipantRebbitzen- Not a very smart idea. Rabbi Meisels does not recommend it. The combined genetics make it more likely to have children with it too.
My brother in law also knew a really good guy that has type 1 but I wouldn’t want to do it at this point.
February 22, 2011 6:03 pm at 6:03 pm #980166tralalaMemberrebetsin, it gives a higher risk for the kids getting it. wanna try?
February 22, 2011 8:25 pm at 8:25 pm #980167dx3Memberphony, yes everybody knows about my kids. for my five year old daughter we went to her class and explained it to them and told the kids that she can do everything that they can do, and that she needs the pump for medicine. we also had to explain to them that she can’t eat everything and that they can’t share snacks. this made things a lot easier for her, so that she doesn’t have to try to keep everything a secret. Most people didn’t know that i had D till my kids got it (not because i specifically tried to keep it a secret). now its harder to keep it a quiet, bec. everyone wants to know where it came from
February 23, 2011 12:29 am at 12:29 am #980168plonyMemberdx3 thanks your answer helps me alot. may you see much nachas from your children. and have an easy time with shidduchim -the same goes for the rest of you on this thread. youre a great group.
February 23, 2011 12:48 am at 12:48 am #980169cofeefanMemberthanks plony=]
February 23, 2011 12:57 am at 12:57 am #980170allsgr8Participantplony- Thank you:)
It sounds like you have a personal interest in this subject…Feel free to join in our discussions- remember we’re all anonymous so noone knows who you are!!
February 23, 2011 3:35 am at 3:35 am #980171dx3Memberplony, sorry about that spelling error 🙂
i have a pump so its a litle harder to keep it away from the public eye, especially on shabbos when i wear it on my belt. do you have a pump or shots?
February 23, 2011 4:14 am at 4:14 am #980172cofeefanMemberdx3- i have the omnipod which is wireless so its virtually invisible (unless you are looking for it/know its there) the PDM which “talks” to the pod (the thing on my stomach that hold the insulin) looks like a blackberry so no one knows what it is. and it doesnt have to be near the pod unless you are giving a bolus. so it just stayed in my bag.i put it in a drawer on shabbos and use shots for bolusing because i dont like to touch it if its not necissary on shabbos.
which pump are you on? what about your kids?
February 23, 2011 5:47 am at 5:47 am #980173rebbitzenMembero well! guess i’ll reject this guy! it just seems ironic to me, that i’m rejecting him because he has diabetes! 🙂
February 23, 2011 2:53 pm at 2:53 pm #980174cofeefanMemberbut rebb its not the same rejection that u r afraid of. you have no issue with the diabetes itself if YOU didnt have it would you go out with him? its jst being a good future mother because you wanna do wtvr you can to spare you children. not that now its a garuntee that they wont have it but you are elliminating HUGE chances by having 2 parents with D. it is kinda funny but its not the same as ppl saying no to you. =] just keep positive!! your ONE STEP CLOSER to the right one!!!!!!!!
February 23, 2011 5:17 pm at 5:17 pm #980175allsgr8ParticipantRebbitzen- I second Coffefan! couldnt have said it bettter!
Btw was it mentioned to the boy already? I wonder if he would even be interested…
February 23, 2011 5:33 pm at 5:33 pm #980176tralalaMembercoffefan, very well written!
February 23, 2011 7:47 pm at 7:47 pm #980177dx3Memberrebb- cofeefan has a good point. i am a Diabetic and my wife is not, and yet i have two kids who have D. (i only have two kids). but on the other hand its not so common. i know of other diabetics who have many kids and yet none of their kids have D.
when my second child was diagnosed someone asked if my wife has a recessive gene. did any of you hear of such a thing?
February 23, 2011 7:54 pm at 7:54 pm #980178dx3Membercofeefan- i am on a minimed, and my kids are both on animas. my daughter until now was on a borrowed pump fron the hospital because the insurance wont let her have a pump until she had D for six months. we just pasted that point and she is supposed to get her own pink pump today. since we are all wired up its harder to hide the pump. both of my kids have the pump in a waist belt and mine is in my pocket (wired through the elastic of an expandable waist). i thought of the omnipod but i am quite active which scares me that i will knock it out.
February 23, 2011 8:26 pm at 8:26 pm #980179allsgr8Participantdx3- funny that you mentioned about the recessive gene cuz I was actually thinking along those lines…but I guess it would be hard for you to if she has those genes or not.
February 23, 2011 11:34 pm at 11:34 pm #980180cofeefanMemberdx3- i also thought it would come off but its pretty secure. i was on the animas and dexcom pumps before this and i have had times when i pulled that off too. but i can hear why this would be more likely to knock off butthe adhesive is very sticky and at times i have to rip it off when i have to change it……. there are always exceptions of course (once it came off when i knocked into the stearing wheel getting into my car lol) ….. but i guess if your very active i understand why you arent so into it…..
February 24, 2011 1:45 am at 1:45 am #980181dx3Membercofeefan-you are right that whatever you have it might br knocked off. even with the madtronic i’ve pulled it out.
i was part of a research project for an israeli company that wants to have something similar to the omnipod but much thinner. it was pretty cool.
February 24, 2011 4:45 am at 4:45 am #980182cofeefanMemberthat is soooo cool dx3! i would totally buy it! what was the result of the reaserch? will they ever have something like that?
February 24, 2011 4:55 am at 4:55 am #980183rebbitzenMemberits interesting. i never heard of anyone with diabetes having kids with diabetes. this scares me…i thought its not genetic!
February 24, 2011 10:25 pm at 10:25 pm #980184cofeefanMemberi thought so too but i guess there are always exceptions i guess! i just remembered that a few years back i had a camper in day camp with D. her father did too. she must be 12 or 13 now… we were close because we both took care of eachother… i wonder what happened to her!
February 24, 2011 11:44 pm at 11:44 pm #980185rebbitzenMemberyoish! bad news for the jews
February 25, 2011 12:58 am at 12:58 am #980186cofeefanMemberwhy? i dont get it reb
February 25, 2011 2:26 am at 2:26 am #980187dx3Membercofeefan- the research team that was from israel, their pump name was called solo. they were working on using a resivior that was about about a 1/2 inch thick that could be detached from a patch that was on the skin. another cool thing they showed us was that they are trying to intergrate into one machine a pump and a cgm. it was pretty neat. otherwise the remote was pretty much the same as the omni.
February 25, 2011 3:23 am at 3:23 am #980188cofeefanMemberso when is it coming on the market?!?!?
February 25, 2011 9:27 am at 9:27 am #980189tralalaMemberI can’t explain in english how it works, i’ll leave that for health, but 1 thing is clear, i know of a few families that the father has it and a child or two. about mothers, I didn’t hear (yet…)
February 25, 2011 8:37 pm at 8:37 pm #980190dx3Membercofeefan- they said that it won’t be out soon. so hold on tight
rebbitzen- about the children i did hear that doctors can do blood test and see if thay possess those antibodies which causes D. if they do find it, thay say that there are things that they can do.(i dont know what it is)
February 25, 2011 9:18 pm at 9:18 pm #980192rebbitzenMemberinteresting dx3…is this something that should be done before getting engaged? also, is your screen name for diabetes x 3?
February 27, 2011 5:01 am at 5:01 am #980194HealthParticipanttralala – “I can’t explain in english how it works, i’ll leave that for health,”
