what is this business of spending so much money on designer brands? i’m curious to hear opinions of why people think they should spend double the price on something just because it says burberry on the label.
March 17, 2010 2:12 am at 2:12 am #681999jphoneMemberTo impress people.
March 17, 2010 2:35 am at 2:35 am #682000GabbyMemberThe most important thing is what’s on the inside… if someone is wearing a juicy sweatsuit, yet is talking about people behind their backs, that doesn’t impress me.
March 17, 2010 2:37 am at 2:37 am #682001hodulashemParticipantnever understood it… i’m curious as well
March 17, 2010 2:39 am at 2:39 am #682002Y.W. EditorKeymasterJust as an FYI, YWN had an “Out Of The Mailbag” in oct 2008 about this.
March 17, 2010 4:17 am at 4:17 am #682003mamisharebbitzenMemberI mamish, mamish agree with smiling!! The labels have definitely gotten out of hand! Why would a frum yid spend so much gelt on a simple and poshut sweatshirt? I remember the days when juicy was when you bit in a fresh orange and D & G were the initials of my friends name and ugg was something you said when you threw up! I mean whats going on here? Who are you trying to impress? Most definitely not me!
March 17, 2010 4:21 am at 4:21 am #682004smilingMemberjphone it doesn’t impress me if someone has something with a designer label just like Gabby said. it’s just so they should feel cool about themself. also people wonder what they’re supposed to do in this economical time well maybe they should spend less money and buy regular companies and they’ll have money for what they really need.
March 17, 2010 5:04 am at 5:04 am #682005qawsMemberI heard that there’s this new company called PHAD that started recently.
March 17, 2010 4:32 pm at 4:32 pm #682006tomim tihyeMemberQaws- maybe you mean the new FAD called PHAT.
March 17, 2010 5:14 pm at 5:14 pm #682007mt mehdiMemberThe better question is, why do you care?
March 17, 2010 5:45 pm at 5:45 pm #682008LAerMembermt mehdi, you’re absolutely right. Who cares? If you don’t like it, don’t do it, but don’t judge other people. Some really do buy it for the quality, some find it for amazing prices (that person whose wardrobe is made up of Ralph Lauren shirts? They may have gotten them for $12 each at Marshall’s), and some people nebach have very low self-esteem and feel the need to prove themselves. If it’s not affecting you, leave it alone!
March 17, 2010 6:17 pm at 6:17 pm #682009qawsMemberTomim thye – no, it is called PHAD. Its brand new. If you google ‘join the PHAD’, you should find their website.
March 17, 2010 6:49 pm at 6:49 pm #682010Ben LeviParticipantMrs, Ben Levi Here, While some brand names are nothing but paying more for the same thing in other cases you are actually getting a better product. I sell headgear for women and I know that while I sell both the cheaper pre-tied bandana’s and the more expensive ones I know that are generally a drop more expensive like DaCee Designs are made far better and will hold up better over time.
March 17, 2010 7:01 pm at 7:01 pm #682011jphoneMember“The better question is, why do you care?”
The same reason they care to impress you.
March 17, 2010 7:06 pm at 7:06 pm #682012movingmountainsMemberNot everyone that wears designer brands pays more for them. I have a friend, who when given the choice, pays more for something if it doesnt have a designer label in order to avoid wearing it. I think obsession in either direction is unhealthy.
March 17, 2010 7:07 pm at 7:07 pm #682013mt mehdiMemberBen Levi, good point. I don’t know woman’s clothing, but for men’s clothing, shoes in particular, there is very large difference in quality among the various brands.
March 17, 2010 7:28 pm at 7:28 pm #682014mt mehdiMemberPersonally, I refuse to wear any clothing with a logo or designer name visible. However, I do pay much more money for my clothing than what the designer names are selling for. I am paying for quality.
March 18, 2010 3:28 am at 3:28 am #682015smilingMemberok people bottom line to pay more for quality is very acceptable. all i meant was is there are people who have an obsession and will pay 60 more dollars for a sweatshirt just because it has a little j now that is insane!
March 18, 2010 4:42 am at 4:42 am #682016rebbitzenMemberit’s seriously out of hand-the name brands. Personally i feel bad for someone who has to spend their life’s savings to get a little j on a sweatshirt. pathetic! and dont give me the excuse that its more comfy…an email went around of all the diff name brands and who the people are behind it, and it was so shocking…no one could believe that it’s actually “cool” to wear these low lives clothing. Half of them are anti semites, and we’re supporting them! pathetic!
March 18, 2010 5:35 am at 5:35 am #682017Ben LeviParticipantI could not agree more, and guess what?
I just don’t do it the extra savings help pay tuition.
March 18, 2010 12:24 pm at 12:24 pm #682018jphoneMemberMost “name brands” are made in the same sweatshops that the labels for Walmart and Target come from. Its not about quality or comfort. Its about your image, what you think about yourself, the image you want to project and the image you want people to get from your projection. If they can afford it, fargin them this indulgence, if they can’t, help them control their spending in an appropriate way. Griping about it on a blog and sniping at them anonymously says to me, your just jealous.
March 18, 2010 12:57 pm at 12:57 pm #682019mt mehdiMember“Most “name brands” are made in the same sweatshops that the labels for Walmart and Target come from.”
Where do you think the non-brand name clothing is manufactured? Shouldn’t you buy clothing that is made in non-sweat shops?
March 18, 2010 2:06 pm at 2:06 pm #682020tomim tihyeMemberHey, Qaws, my comment was just brand name humor!
March 18, 2010 11:01 pm at 11:01 pm #682021jphoneMemberMt. Mhedi. I’m looking to buy a few dress shirts, what label is “socially responsible”?
March 19, 2010 12:08 am at 12:08 am #682022aries2756ParticipantThis is way too funny. Why does a person want to be in Yeshiva “x” instead of “y” when both have great programs and excellent Rebbeim? Is it not to show off that they are in a particular yeshiva? Why do we buy an Artscroll siddur or machzor when a cheaper brand obviously has the same words and tefilos in them? Why do we do whatever is necessary to get our daughters into BJJ or Bnos Chava when there are at least a dozen seminaries just as good?
It is the same answer, it is status and people aim to achieve a certain standard and status for themselves. Why are you picking on clothing and designer brands? If you truly want to ask an important question then ask a question into why people need to acquire everything to the n’th degree or to a higher or highest level attainable. Many will say because “everyone else does and that is the “in” thing to do”. Many will say they want the best money can buy. Many have no clue why they are on the roller-coaster with everyone else. Why do people rush to buy homes in a certain neighborhood or a certain block? Why do they drive the cars that they do? Why do they look for the shidduchim they are looking for? It is all human nature. I don’t agree that we need to or even have a right to look for things to discuss and criticize about our fellow Jews it is not the proper etiquette for Yiddin.
March 19, 2010 12:49 am at 12:49 am #682023shtarkbocherMemberThe brooks brother non iron white dress shirts are amazing quality and you can wash them in the washing machine so you save on the dry clean. you can get them for about 40-50 dollars a shirt and they last a long time
March 22, 2010 8:51 pm at 8:51 pm #682024youngbutnotstupidMembermy little bro thought he was the coolest thing in his brooks bro. shirts…till one day he was like, ma i really dont like these shirts

March 23, 2010 1:43 am at 1:43 am #682025simchallthetimeMemberIf u buy the brooks bro. shirts in an outlet store, sale time u can get them as little as 20-30$ each!!!! Now how’s that for cheap quality?
March 23, 2010 11:24 pm at 11:24 pm #682026bombmaniacParticipanti fail to see the problem with dressing well…if dressing well means buying a brooks brothers shirt, then buy it, if you can afford it. the only thing i can think of that people may have a problem with, is when the people who DO dress well look down upon those that do not or cannot dress as well as them. that is disgusting. I’ll grant you that. however saying that no one should ever wear an article of clothing just because it has a logo that marks it as an above average priced item, is being petulant and jealous and has to realize that not everyone can have everything. there are people in this world that can afford more expensive items, and there are those that cannot. i fail to see why one should be influenced by the other. for those of you who are reading this and shaking your heads in disgust, ill repeat what i said above. if you are doing it because you simply enjoy dressing well, then go for it. however if you are doing it so that you can safely look down upon, and sneer at those not as privileged as you are, then you are disgusting. however pertaining to the former, to all those that cannot afford to buy what they have, be happy with what you have. don’t feel a need to have what they have, you are fine as you are. don’t go around being jealous of what others have that you cannot.
