February 6, 2009 8:11 pm at 8:11 pm #1082154qwertyuiopMemberwell since the title was changed by mod##, i think moish wears a hat only when he’s in pajamas, as was being discussed afew pages back.
February 9, 2009 3:29 am at 3:29 am #1082155teenMembermoish01: whats with you and the milkshakes did i miss something?
February 9, 2009 6:22 am at 6:22 am #1082156anonymisssParticipantteen, yup, seems like you did miss something. BIG! This might be the coffee room for people like you and me, but for our good friend moish, this is the “milkshake room.” That sounds weird, I don’t like it. Moish, I think you’re going to have to start drinking coffee. sorry.
~a~

February 9, 2009 8:28 pm at 8:28 pm #1082159areivimzehlazehParticipantmoish- you have no idea how creepy this weekend was for me. Every step of the way there was something that happened to remind me of you. I went to a speech and there was a part that I wished I could have copied down- twas very inspiring and expressed what I want to say PERFECTLY. I listed to some music on motzei shabbos and every song had a theme that was so applicable and insightful- as if it was written with us in mind…. I read an article in the paper that gave me the chills- that’s how accurate it was…. on and on…
I don’t know if it’s because I’m more intuned or Hashem is sending me message after message that I just can’t ignore. Either way, Hashem won’t let me forget about you and I’m still davening for you….

February 10, 2009 10:04 pm at 10:04 pm #1082171areivimzehlazehParticipanti read General Shmooz- don’t remember a question though. Please post here (mods please allow- thanks! 🙂

February 10, 2009 10:15 pm at 10:15 pm #1082172areivimzehlazehParticipantfahget it- responded in general shmooz already
February 10, 2009 10:19 pm at 10:19 pm #1082173moish01Memberhere but i’m gonna add to it
is it better to know a halacha and then to go against it, or not to know it altogether? either way you’re gonna be doing the same thing.
i’m remembering a few points.
A) if you know someone won’t listen you’re not mechuyav to tell them. does that apply to yourself?
B) but on the other hand, that story with the cofeitz chaim with that guy who didn’t wanna buy his sefer because he said it’s impossible to not speak loshon hora. the CC answered him that even if he would just sigh after reading it, it’s worth it.
February 10, 2009 10:57 pm at 10:57 pm #1082174SJSinNYCMemberif you know someone won’t listen you’re not mechuyav to tell them. does that apply to yourself?
If you know yourself, but don’t tell yourself, you are just LYING to yourself. How can you know but not know?
February 10, 2009 11:29 pm at 11:29 pm #1082175CuriousMemberI’ll go with choice B.
It shows the desire to have the knowledge available for the time when you want to implement it, as opposed to never even wanting that opportunity to utilize the knowledge.
February 11, 2009 12:55 am at 12:55 am #1082176moish01Memberyeah but then it’s b’mezid – which is far worse than a shoggeg. so you’re basically setting yourself up.
February 11, 2009 3:06 am at 3:06 am #1082177moish01Membersjs – contrary to popular belief, i don’t know everything. but i could find out if i asked or tried learning (not likely, but it’s possible)
February 11, 2009 4:08 am at 4:08 am #1082178mw13Participantmoish, i’m pretty sure it’s better to know it, because as you said, you get schar for just feeling guilty.
February 11, 2009 4:29 am at 4:29 am #1082179CuriousMemberI don’t think it’s a shogeig if you had the opportunity to learn the correct thing and yet decided against it.
It’s lke saying “I’d prefer not to learn Hilchos Shabbos so that I am not knowingly over an aveirah.” No go…
BTW I posted that CC story, can’t believe you (not you specifically, but rather anyone) remembered enough to be able to repeat it. 🙂
February 11, 2009 5:06 am at 5:06 am #1082180moish01Membercurious, but some things are technical. you needa learn them through. not like “can i turn on the light?” “no.”
mw13, that’s what the CC said in that scenario. but what about the other side?
and curious, don’t doubt my memory here… i wish it were weaker. you know what it’s like doing something wrong and in the middle you have all the mefarshim and halachos and punishments and what not running through your mind? you don’t wanna know. i can’t even enjoy it half the time. trust me, i wish i could forget some stuff.
February 11, 2009 5:13 am at 5:13 am #1082181moish01Memberhey curious, i don’t remember you posting that story. (jk!)
happens to be, i knew it from before
February 11, 2009 5:17 am at 5:17 am #1082182asdfghjklParticipantmoish: you know what it’s like doing something wrong and in the middle you have all the mefarshim and halachos and punishments and what not running through your mind? you don’t wanna know. i can’t even enjoy it half the time. trust me, i wish i could forget some stuff.
i had that too, it’s torturous!!! i’m not ganna get in details with my thing, put the memory is painful!!!
February 11, 2009 5:18 am at 5:18 am #1082183CuriousMembermoish: curious, but some things are technical. you needa learn them through
Agreed. I am far from a perfect person. There is so so much that I need to improve. Be it mitzvos between me and G-d, or me and fellow man. Just thinking about where I can use improvement makes me dizzy. So I’ve decided to pick one thing that I’d like to make a real effort to improve. In essence I am putting a lot of other faults/weakneeses on the back burner, temporarily (hopefully). However, as long as I am making some sort of effort, I know I’m in the right direction.
If I would decide to now learn hilchos brachos, hilchos shabbos, methods to improve prayer, techniques to combat laziness, etc.. I’d never start anywhere and I’d accomplish nothing.
Pick one thing, the smaller and easier the better. Success in a small area gives you confidence to succeed at something tougher.
…Gosh, did I just sound like areivim??
BTW, I use this psychology when I’m too lazy to run. I tell myself, just do 1 mile. Then when I finish that I feel so good, I try another mile, and then another…
February 11, 2009 5:21 am at 5:21 am #1082184CuriousMemberGuess what moish. I’ve learnt that English sefer 3x and each time I read the stories/anecdotes it’s like I’m hearing it for the first time again… Talk about short-term memory.
February 11, 2009 5:24 am at 5:24 am #1082185moish01Membercurious, is that your aspiration?
asdfghjkl, maybe you get it. maybe you don’t.
is this what you meant? YW Moderator-25
February 11, 2009 5:33 am at 5:33 am #1082188asdfghjklParticipantmoish: i do get it completely!!! i wasn’t always the person i am today!!! it took a lot for me to get back on track!!!
February 11, 2009 5:33 am at 5:33 am #1082189CuriousMemberis that your aspiration?
Which part are you referring to – sounding like Areivim?
If so, no, though I do admire Arevim’s talent in communicating so well. I would never be able to match him.
Regardless, I am the last person to give mussar, I think I was talking to myself mostly 😉 (Realize I stay away from most controversial threads?)
February 11, 2009 5:41 am at 5:41 am #1082190asdfghjklParticipantCurious: you & avairim might be a cr schidduch!!! hee hee!!!

Well, if you are saying that you don’t ask to find out if its treif, thats different than knowing its treif and lying to yourself.
Me personally, I don’t ask for a psak for something I know I am not going to follow. Why? I don’t think its fair to take advantage of the system. So if I know I am going to do XYZ wrong if I am told its wrong, its not fair of me to find out if its right. If I would listen, I ask.
Is this right? Probably not. But I just don’t like to take advantage of the system.
February 11, 2009 7:30 pm at 7:30 pm #1082194moish01Memberoh so looks like we do the same thing!
