my kid was born right before rosh hashana so when should we make the upsherin, before hes 3, erev rosh hashana (a sunday) or the sunday before yom kippur and why do you think that
August 17, 2012 7:01 pm at 7:01 pm #1086055shlishiMemberOn his third birthday. Why otherwise?
August 17, 2012 7:01 pm at 7:01 pm #1086056WolfishMusingsParticipantIf your minhag is to not cut hair before three, then don’t do it before he’s three. After his birthday? Do it whenever you want… there’s no halacha in this matter. If the day before Yom Kippur isn’t convenient, then do it on a weekday between between RH and Succos or do it after Succos.

August 19, 2012 3:11 am at 3:11 am #1086058smartcookieMemberMazel tov! Upsherins are beautiful!
It depends if you’re planning an event and inviting family, Erev Yom Tov might be a very hard day for that.
How about doing it right b4 the shabbos before Rosh Hashana to avoid the Erev rush?
August 19, 2012 12:15 pm at 12:15 pm #1086059☕️coffee addictParticipantshlishi,
I know people do it on sunday, i dont think its coincidental
thank you smartcookie,
if im planning an event and inviting family (which i am) sunday is the most convenient day and that led to my question
August 19, 2012 7:21 pm at 7:21 pm #1086060smartcookieMemberCoffee, you’re saying Sunday is the most convenitent day which makes sense. However, sunday Erev Rosh Hashana would be difficult for a “party” in my home. You gotta be all ready for y”t then.
I guess it’s up to your wife’s preference.
August 20, 2012 11:14 pm at 11:14 pm #1086061ChortkovParticipantMy yekkishe cousins walked around with short hair from the age of two or something like that, but without a kappul and tzitzis until they were three.
I don’t understand exactly why they didn’t give a kappul and tzitzis before three if they cut the hair before three, but the kids looked like goyim 🙂
I personally only had a hair cut at three because i am litvish on the maternal side and my grandad is makpid but apparently there is no mekor for it at all.
August 21, 2012 6:16 am at 6:16 am #1086062NechomahParticipantI recall my son’s upsherin which was on 8 Tishrei, so the day before Erev Yom Kippur. For me it was harder doing the haircutting (and all of the activities associated with that – going to rabbonim for snips plus a festive meal) than it was to give birth at that time of year. I plan on splitting up the celebrations associated with his Bar Mitzvah in 2 years.
If Sunday is the day you want to do it, then I would suggest doing it the following week since doing it on erev RH, unless you are not making any meals in your house over those 2 days, would be almost impossible for your wife to enjoy.
August 21, 2012 6:46 pm at 6:46 pm #1086063UnderstandMemberWhen I asked my LOR, he told me to cut the hair the Sunday before my son turned three, because as soon as he is 3 he should have a haircut and yalmuka. I was told to push it up not off.

my second son’s upsherin is this sunday (going to the rebbe on tuesday)
June 7, 2015 11:56 pm at 11:56 pm #1086065JosephParticipantWhich rebbe shlita?
June 7, 2015 11:58 pm at 11:58 pm #1086066🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantwhy? do you want to meet him there?
June 8, 2015 1:06 am at 1:06 am #1086067JosephParticipantI’m always ready to join a simcha.
June 8, 2015 1:33 am at 1:33 am #1086068Matan1ParticipantWhat is the source and reason for an upsherin? I’ve always wondered this.

June 8, 2015 2:48 pm at 2:48 pm #1086070Matan1ParticipantSo the hair is like the fruit of the tree?

Except that, I believe, there is no issur to pick the fruit of a tree of orlah. You can’t eat it, of course, and it’s assur b’hana’a, but I believe there is no issur from picking the fruit off of the tree.

June 9, 2015 2:15 am at 2:15 am #1086073Matan1ParticipantAnd what is the source?
June 9, 2015 3:31 am at 3:31 am #1086074☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantMentioned by ??? ???? and ???? ????? here:
June 9, 2015 4:19 am at 4:19 am #1086075Sam2ParticipantThe way I always heard it, which doesn’t make sense either, is that it’s Chinuch on the Mitzvah of Peiyos.
June 9, 2015 11:54 am at 11:54 am #1086076KingShloimeMemberMy minhag is we do cut hair but do not cut fingernails until the boy is 3. Because the fingers are like tree branches, so fingernails are more comparable to tree fruits. At the ushering party we serve the fingernails to the parents and grandparents to eat for the first time (it’s a big kibbud).
