What is it like? What sort of girls? Positives and negatives.
December 28, 2011 4:50 am at 4:50 am #847400TheGoqParticipantWell the award for most seminary related threads created in a 48 hour period goes to zeena!
December 28, 2011 5:25 am at 5:25 am #847401zeena.kastaMemberYes. I am most stressed about the matter. And I have written a lot of comments. Sending your daughter away from your home is hard, I just want to make the right choice. Some people have suggested Darchei Binah in previous topics and I want to know what you all think about the seminary?
December 28, 2011 6:03 am at 6:03 am #847402zeena.kastaMemberWhat seminary would you recommend and why?
December 28, 2011 3:01 pm at 3:01 pm #847403yungerman1Participantzeena- You are not likely to get enough information from the CR to make an informed decision. Every seminary is great—for a certain type of girl. If you want to tell us everything about your daughter, what schools she went to, intellectual capacity, personality, level of frumkeit, what kind of E”Y experience she is looking for, etc… then you might have a shot. Otherwise, good luck!
December 28, 2011 11:15 pm at 11:15 pm #847404zeena.kastaMemberok yungerman here goes. My daughter is an open minded, sweet, funny, yet serious girl. In Australia there is only one frum school that offers a proper year 12 so she goes to Beis Rivka even though she would go to Beis Yaakov if they had one here. My daughter is intensely intellectual. She won the national chidon hatanach for example. She is a little loud, leader of the pack, when she is given work she works harder than required. She is frum, davens everyday, does alot of chesed, but she will listen to non-Jewish music and her skirt will be on her knee for example. She is looking for an intellectual year with e”y life long friends, she needs to have a relationship with her teachers.
December 28, 2011 11:22 pm at 11:22 pm #847405zeena.kastaMemberoh and after seminary she hopes to get a secular education at university so she can support a family if need be.
December 28, 2011 11:36 pm at 11:36 pm #847406zeena.kastaMemberlet me reiterate- it needs to be very intellectual! she knows more pashat torah than the average guy out of smicha…thats what the chidon hatanach did to her.
December 29, 2011 12:12 am at 12:12 am #847407OneOfManyParticipantYou might be interested in Machon Raaya. The course load is very rigorous. Michlala would also be a good choice. Here’s some info in MR:

December 29, 2011 3:05 am at 3:05 am #847408zeena.kastaMemberThanks. There’s not alot of information online about mechon raaya. Even on the pages U sent me. Could U please describe it in details as well darchei binah??
December 29, 2011 3:18 am at 3:18 am #847409OneOfManyParticipantDo you have any specific questions?
December 29, 2011 3:34 am at 3:34 am #847410whatelseisleftMemberI think michalalah might be better.
Darchei binah might be a little less intellectual
December 29, 2011 4:41 am at 4:41 am #847411zeena.kastaMemberIsn’t michala more of a college??
December 29, 2011 4:58 am at 4:58 am #847412OneOfManyParticipantOfficially, they call themselves that. But I wouldn’t equate them to a secular college. Michlala is much bigger than the average seminary, has people of all different backgrounds, and uses more of a inquiry-based (versus hashkafik) method. They are not catering to a “type” per se – their focus is on the learning. This produces a different sort of learning environment. The classes are also a lot less regimented. Outside of that, it’s not much like an actual secular college.
Disclaimer: I didn’t go there, so I don’t have firsthand knowledge. These are just the impressions I got from friends who went there/teachers who taught there. Feel free to add, disagree, etc.
December 29, 2011 5:16 am at 5:16 am #847413KudaliMemberNope. Actually contrary to popular belief Michlalah is not more of a college. Girls who yearn to genuinely grow, learn, and develop into productive and capable young women attend Michlalah. These are girls who eventually become caring and devoted jewish mothers and wives who serve an integral purpose here on earth and make a valuable contribution towards Klal Yisrael. Michlalah has an unbelievably caring staff who give of themselves and constantly cater to their students and each girl’s every need. They are always on call and willing to help and give advice. Though Michlalah does have a large student body, the staff knows of each student, not only by name but by personality and as an individual. They really care. There are many chashuv learned rabanim who teach there and who are apart of their faculty. In addition their are multiple amazing women who give their heart and souls through lectures, classes, and personal attention. Michlalah is a great place and how unfortunate it is that ignorance leads to the misconception of the holiness and amazingness of the intense makom torah that it truly is. Michlalah teaches so much torah and is an extremely respectable place. I, a bais yaakov girl, gained so much from my seminary experience and owe michlalah tons of hakaras hatov. I am not advocating for all to attend Michlalah, for it is obviously not for everyone, but just appreciate the kind of place that it is because it is really one of a kind. Torah is their priority and believe me they know and give so much of it.
December 29, 2011 5:28 am at 5:28 am #847414KudaliMemberMichlalah is the bridge to real life. From high school to the real world. the stepping block in between. You are responsible for stocking your own fridge, cooking supper, making time for accomplishing your errands while balancing everyday life and school work. Everything is not handed to you on a silver platter. you have to figure things out. These are all factors which help the development of an individual. You learn to be independent and self sufficient. Michlalah trusts you to make wise decisions. By the way, tznius is enforced. Skirts that are too short will be confiscated. They care.

January 12, 2012 2:15 pm at 2:15 pm #847421aries2756ParticipantYou might also check Sharfman’s, it sounds like it might be a good fit.
January 12, 2012 3:37 pm at 3:37 pm #847422BTGuyParticipantHI zeena.
I think this is a great place to acquire information. It has the potential of a great random sampling from among all kinds of members of our community.
If someone does not have much to contribute to any given topic, fine. But how can someone predict a poster will not find what they are looking for? Makes no sense.
Hatzlacha in finding the information you need to help you make a decision.
January 19, 2012 3:45 am at 3:45 am #847423zeena.kastaMemberI live in Australia. There aren’t enough people who would know anything. I need to get more opinions.
January 19, 2012 3:48 am at 3:48 am #847424OneOfManyParticipantNu, so ask some questions.
January 19, 2012 4:07 am at 4:07 am #847425brotherofursParticipanti know someone who went to darchei binah and she looked at your post of what type of girl your daughter is and she thinks Darchei binah is perfect for her! she said there were many girls in darchei bina who were exactly like your daughter sounds and they loved it there, it was perfect for them!- very intellectual,-tons of studying and delving into the subjects, made lifelong friends, relationships with teachers, same type of girls,(from beis yaakov, openminded, some listen to non jewish music and same skirt length..)
January 20, 2012 8:14 am at 8:14 am #847426zeena.kastaMemberThank you so much. It makes the decision so much easier, knowing that someone else on the other side of the world is looking in to darchei binah and is of similar hashgafa and background 🙂

January 29, 2012 5:40 am at 5:40 am #847436brotherofursParticipantDarchei binah- said by someone i know:
“I dont think you should base your decision on me, especially because i went there and i didnt think it was the right seminary for me so i might have a negetive perspective but i do know about it and i’ll tell you what i experienced and what i remember:
1. to find out where everything they learned came from so that they know for life. teachers they can get close to, somewhere to grow.
2. important, you have to read a meforash and explain it and get Rabbi Kurland to like you ;)figure out his sense of humor
3. there were all different classes. some with charusos, some lectures and some writing notes, and most were intense.
4&5.from what i remember some classes you have to take like a type of navi class, tzenius, shabbat, gur aryeh, chumash, and others are optional like mesilat yesharim, or kashrut -there are at least 20 different ones to choose from
6. there is at least 1 test a week, quizzes, reports, a lot of homework and studying.
7.getting as much work done was important and work was a biggg factor of importance.
8. what made it hard for me was there were a lot of classes that involved a lot of mefarshim and the text, delving into the subject ex. hatzneah leches (tzenius) and tons of studying.
9. very open-the students would talk to the teachers privately about anything(boyfriends or different halachos) every week there was ‘ask the Rabbi’ where we would accompany the Rabbi at his house and we were able to ask any questions we wanted. the teachers are very experienced and most of them speak around the world and have met a lot of people and are able to talk to the students. such as;Rabbi Orlavsky, Rabbi Nissel, Mrs. Smiles, Rabbi Teller etc.
10. both- growing spiritually through the texts and sources
11. i think 95% of the school are people that grew up towards the right. (very few people that did not grow up religious at all)
12. there are classes on middos and they do focus a lot on dress, but there’s no uniform and most of the classes help the girls love halachot and Judaism and respect and love Torah
13. there were about 80 girls from shana aleph and about 30 shana bet girls, when i attended and there were many different groups and in my opinion, every single girl felt comfortable somewhere, no one seemed left out.
14. yes, theres a big trip to Poland for about a week (i think) in March. -it was an amazing experience and the schedule was well organized and meaningful.
15. rules like: no yaffa street, ben yehudah street or in town past 6 pm. curfew at 12 am, no laptops, yes cell phones and texting(not in class 😉 dress code:skirts, tights, long sleeve shirts, high collar, no slits, – you are able to wear jean and any colors you want.
16. see above 😉
17. 3 buildings. they all have kitchens, the girls are responsible for keeping it clean, very strict with toranut-each girl is responsible for cleaning a specific part in the dorm every week (don’t worry no toilets involved ;)some are spacious others are smaller like the basement. Request 1 roomate ONLY- rather than 2- cuz you’ll be cramped in a bunk bed.
18. you can go out every shabbos and yom tov, except for maybe twice a year, you have to let them know where you are staying-(very strict)
19. 1 meal a day-lunch- consists of salad, vegetables,a carb, a protein, soup, and dessert. you have to go shopping and cook the rest. (there’s a makolet down the block that delivers)
January 29, 2012 12:25 pm at 12:25 pm #847437zeena.kastaMemberWhat are your experiences of Darchei Binah?

January 30, 2012 4:20 am at 4:20 am #847439zeena.kastaMemberThe attitude that the average girl had?? How advanced were your textual skills before you attended? If a girl was intellegent, how intellegent would she have to be to top the class??
January 31, 2012 1:22 am at 1:22 am #847440brotherofursParticipanthmm im not sure the person i know can answer those questions because she wasn’t the average person there, she was one of the few that thought it was really not for her.
January 31, 2012 1:33 am at 1:33 am #847441LBKParticipantis darchei binah the one in tzfat?
January 31, 2012 1:53 am at 1:53 am #847442theeariMemberi havent read all of the posts but i did read about your daughter. Darchei Binah is a wonderful seminary! I would say Darchei Binah is the “step before beis yaakov” and it seems your daughter is just that. Also, the connections with the teachers is the most amazing part of that seminary. The school has Rabbi Orlofsky, Rabbi Nissel, Mrs Smiles and many more of the “top names” in the seminary world. You also mentioned that your daughter really wants an education. there is a wide variety of classes. She can make her schedule however she likes. there are the very textual course and those that are discussion based. again she chooses the courses that she wants. This seminary, i think, makes a very well rounded good frum girl. It is truly an amazing seminary. Best of luck!
January 31, 2012 4:23 pm at 4:23 pm #847443aimhabonimParticipantAttention,Zeena.Kasta- I am very close to a young woman who recently attended Darchei Binah. For answers to your questions, spend time on their website darcheibinah.org. There’s loads of info on it. Next, call Mrs. Kermaier at the sem at 011-972-2-6410266 with any questions. She’s a sweetheart who’ll be honest with you and be very helpful to you. And by the way,the young woman who was there had an outstanding year.
