Is it required to cover your arm wearing Tefilin or can you leave it uncovered?
How is it best covered — with just your shirt sleeve leaving your jacket arm hanging or should the jacket arm be over your arm as well? It is difficult getting the shirt or jacket sleeve over the arm with the Tefilin.
If you have one of those removable boxes with the hole in the center that are made to protect the shel yad you don’t need to cover it. I think covering it is just to protect it. Not a halacha per se.
Pashtus is that it has to be covered. The Gemara might imply that it’s okay if it’s in a place that’s usually covered (the arm) but not actually cover. Many are Machir to cover it completely, including the Retzuos. (This is a Drasha of Ukshartam L’os Al Yadecha- Lecha L’os V’lo L’acherim L’os.)
So one should roll their shirt sleeve and/or jacket sleeve over their arm on top of the Retzuos and Tefilin? Certainly the Tefilin and preferably the Retzuous too?
Also, does anyone else have trouble getting their shirt sleeve over their arm and/or their jacket sleeve over their arm? Any suggestions?
WIY: Just the opposite. The tefillin must be covered by a sleeve or similar (as mentioned by sam2 – ???? ?? ???? ??? ??????). The box with the hole in, is only to protect your teffilin from being damaged as you rub your sleeve over the Teffilin.
In sefer Tshuvas Avigdor Halevi (Rav Nebantzol) on pg 65 was asked if it was hefsek to cover ones teffilin she’ll yad with his sleeve before putting on the rosh,he answered that it is not,the questioner asked why not ,the Rav said because it is a chelek of the mitzvah.
The Rivevos Ephraim chelek 8:362 ,holds to cover after the shel rosh because it might br a hefsek.in chelek 8:12 he brings from the Chazon Ish that he would take the covering off and then put it back on after he made the bracha of the shel yad and made the wrappings.srr it inside for alot of sources on the topic.
