there have been fda approved tests for a while. why aren’t these more popular? wouldn’t it make sense that everyone test themselves every day rather than vaccinating 70% of the population?

Presently the kit costs $1.19 so daily testing is kind of expensive and the result isn’t immediate.

I’ve used the at home test kits a few times and have also been tested with the more reliable PCR tests when I felt any symptoms. The costs for at home testing range from $80 to $110 and may not be covered by insurance (whereas the PCR tests administered by health care providers are generally free). Even after being vaccinated, I still may want to get the antibody tests periodically.

maybe not for home tests, but there are also batch tests that amkes testing much cheaper. You combine multiple people’s specimen together and dig further only if at least one is positive. Chinese use that and FDA finally approved some recently

They just approved the first at-home covid tests, which sends results to your smartphone in 15 minutes with 95% accuracy.
