A number of threads talk about bochurim acting “cool” or “with it”. They describe how in the yeshiva world there are certain actions and ways of talking or dressing etc. which are the unspoken “in” thing to do. I find that really interesting. Can someone give some examples?

December 22, 2010 2:11 am at 2:11 am #720884Ma ChovasoMemberIts something like wearing plum colored burberry crew neck sweaters over the traditional white shirt black pants…
The cool ones also tend to stand out on a limb and do the gray pant thing every few days
December 22, 2010 2:18 am at 2:18 am #720885wag the dogMemberI think one example is zizit hanging out and to what length. Although it is brought down in sifarim to wear it where it can be seen some guys wear it far out, extending real low. I think it is a with it move.
December 22, 2010 4:02 am at 4:02 am #720886not2brightMemberreal-brisker, chill out about the brim-up thing, when you say bochurim are doing it to look cool, you are accusing 1000s of good kids of ignoring their rosh’s speech about not looking cool, when they could just like how it looks better, not want to completely stick out etc.
December 22, 2010 5:02 am at 5:02 am #720887real-briskerMembernot2bright – Why in the world would it be sticking out? Its the normal way how to wear a hat! I never heard of doing something normal that sticks out! Its obviously being done because its cool!

December 22, 2010 5:58 am at 5:58 am #720889wag the dogMemberI think chup size makes a difference. Also the angle of the yarmulka meaning how close to the front or side of head play in as factors. Also Yarmulka size.

the longer the hair (in the front) is , the more cool…
the more deodorant (especially axe) the more cool…
peyos in the front
There is some more but was already mentioned like:
gray pants
yarmulka to the side
yarmulka size

December 22, 2010 11:45 pm at 11:45 pm #720892bptParticipantVery subjective terms, so they really elude definition. In my shul, I’m condsidered “with it”, yet if I went to a place in <take your pick>, I’d be as stale as week-old bread.
Its like trying to define “pretty”. Depends on the yardstick you’re using

December 23, 2010 2:53 am at 2:53 am #720895jewishnessParticipantThen of course there is the form of speech. The more you pepper your talk with really weird Yiddish words or hard core Aramaic lingo….your totally with the in group. Your like in in in.
December 23, 2010 6:02 am at 6:02 am #720896Yanky123MemberIt’s very not cool to post on a nerdy thread as such.

December 23, 2010 6:40 am at 6:40 am #720899Derech HaMelechMemberDon’t listen to the poster above me- he’s still new2thescene.
In EY their chups are so big that they don’t pull their hats down level to their heads they tilt it back enough to not disturb the chup chas v’shalom.
Also if you don’t have stripes on your jacket and pants as well as white on white stripes on your shirt you are probably older than 45 here.
Also if your hat doesn’t have silver on it, you’re probably not from EY. Increases “with it”ness based on size of silver tab.

Oooh, Eclispe, did you hit this one on target. My kids scarves are WAY cooler than mine.
December 23, 2010 3:50 pm at 3:50 pm #720904SacrilegeMemberI think its more about personality and secular knowledge… on the “with it” front at least.
December 23, 2010 3:56 pm at 3:56 pm #720905eclipseMemberBPT,I think it’s an Israeli thing– only the scarf. No?
It got adapted here in America.
December 23, 2010 5:34 pm at 5:34 pm #720906Derech HaMelechMemberMaybe it got started from people that wear there jackets and scarves in the Beis Medrash and then some people dropped the jacket

December 24, 2010 5:55 am at 5:55 am #720908Yanky123MemberDerech Ha’; I’m actually not new to the yeshiva or style scene. I’ve been for last ten years. That was my first screen name, new2 yeshiva world coffee room. Never had a chance to change it yet,
