My husband went to a new Shul and told me about a man he stood near, He davens so special. He has such a melodious voice, and says each word clearly.
So, I asked me did you tell him? He said “No you don’t do such things!”
This got me thinking – Why should we not compliment people when they do something nice, or something kind? Why are we unable to compliment people around us freely and happily? I meant truthful compliments!

In addition, it is always a good idea to compliment a young fellow when he starts davening from the amud – even if it wasn’t perfect. and each time tell him how much better he is getting and then if he is making a mistake (usually because they are nervous) you can show gently point it out to him. Sadly, I know adults that will not daven from the amud because of experiences as a recent Bar Mitzvah.

Huge compliment to estherh, who if you notice and follow her posts ALL of them are positive, complimentary and by doing such she adds SO much to the CR and I’m sure to life in general! 3 cheers!

praising someone in the presence of those who dont like or are jealous of him is avak loshon hara
praising a baal givah can be lifnei iver
praising someone of the other gender, especially if married can be non-tznius, and lead to innapropriate endearment
If someone compliments a close one of yours, f.e. spouse, friend, neighbor etc…and you dont pass it on to them, it indicates selfishness on your part. agree??

Great! Now let’s get this message to all the yeshivos who have their big shebang dinners and heap praise on people who don’t deserve it, but just to get the big bucks. And you know what’s going through the minds of those hearing this don’t you…

i just want to make it clear that one has to use judgment in their actions always, even with such a positive thing as paying compliments
estherh i just wanted you to know that more people are smiling in this world because of you. One of my campers was put in a group with no friends for an hour activity- and dealt with it admirably! After thinking about this thread i decided to call the camper and compliment…

Todah rabbah. I do not know how to use the blockquote feature Mod 42 mentioned, or how to italicize, or I would have done it by now. My apologies.
oomis, test it out in the laboratory thread. Just copy my post from above. It’s pretty simple, the text has to be surrounded by “tags” which are the things that start with”<” and end with “>”. For italics, put “em” inside, for quote, put “blockquote”, for bold, put “strong”. To make things blue use “a”. The “closing tag” at the end of the text should be the same thing except that there is a “/” added before the word so

Ok, I went to the lab thread, took one look at it and lost my breakfast! Life is way too short to try to figure out what any of that meant, so I will just try to really remember to always use the quote marks. Thanks for trying to help. 🙂

Start and end the line with a backtick.
This tells the browser that you want to display the code “as-is” and not have it interpreted as formatting directives.
