My husband went to a new Shul and told me about a man he stood near, He davens so special. He has such a melodious voice, and says each word clearly.
So, I asked me did you tell him? He said “No you don’t do such things!”
This got me thinking – Why should we not compliment people when they do something nice, or something kind? Why are we unable to compliment people around us freely and happily? I meant truthful compliments!
August 6, 2009 8:23 pm at 8:23 pm #720909YW Moderator-72Participantgood point estherh.
In addition, it is always a good idea to compliment a young fellow when he starts davening from the amud – even if it wasn’t perfect. and each time tell him how much better he is getting and then if he is making a mistake (usually because they are nervous) you can show gently point it out to him. Sadly, I know adults that will not daven from the amud because of experiences as a recent Bar Mitzvah.

But we can change!
I personally know of so so many people who are who they are today,
JUST BECAUSE OF A COMPLIMENT…
how true…
how scary…
So… i would like to compliment the moderators of YWN CR for doing such an amazing job… Thanx!
Huge compliment to estherh, who if you notice and follow her posts ALL of them are positive, complimentary and by doing such she adds SO much to the CR and I’m sure to life in general! 3 cheers!

Great! Now let’s get this message to all the yeshivos who have their big shebang dinners and heap praise on people who don’t deserve it, but just to get the big bucks. And you know what’s going through the minds of those hearing this don’t you…
August 7, 2009 2:35 pm at 2:35 pm #720915Be HappyParticipantIf you look how I began this thread – I mean truthful compliments! – Complimenting husbands or wives for doing regular tasks. Lets try not to take them for granted eg husband takes out garbage or does the shopping. How many times do we compliment our children? neighbours? for a task well done? How many times have you told someone they look good or you like their dress, shietel, or perhaps even their flowers in their garden? etc.
August 7, 2009 2:52 pm at 2:52 pm #720916feivelParticipantesther if your last comment was towards me, i was also talking about truthful comments.
i agree with you wholeheartedly
i just want to make it clear that one has to use judgment in their actions always, even with such a positive thing as paying compliments

You can use “blockquote” tags around the text you are quoting:
<blockquote>blah, blah...</blockquote>
will make it come up as a quote box. – YW Moderator-42

Todah rabbah. I do not know how to use the blockquote feature Mod 42 mentioned, or how to italicize, or I would have done it by now. My apologies.
August 11, 2009 5:37 am at 5:37 am #720924YW Moderator-42Moderatoroomis, test it out in the laboratory thread. Just copy my post from above. It’s pretty simple, the text has to be surrounded by “tags” which are the things that start with”<” and end with “>”. For italics, put “em” inside, for quote, put “blockquote”, for bold, put “strong”. To make things blue use “a”. The “closing tag” at the end of the text should be the same thing except that there is a “/” added before the word so
</em>
instead of<em>

Ok, I went to the lab thread, took one look at it and lost my breakfast! Life is way too short to try to figure out what any of that meant, so I will just try to really remember to always use the quote marks. Thanks for trying to help. 🙂

being modest in nature coupled with being truly humble servants, Mods do not look for or seek in any manner, shape or form public thanks, however we push aside our own feelings and graciously accept thanks in any and all threads just for you… so feel free to lavish glorious accolades upon us (after all we do deserve it) in as many threads as you desire.

Type this: <X>oomis<Y>
Now in place of the X type: a (remove the X and type a in it’s place.)
In place of the Y type: /a
That’s it.
You can do it in this thread.
Go ahead!

Start and end the line with a backtick.
This tells the browser that you want to display the code “as-is” and not have it interpreted as formatting directives.
