When I first came to the yeshiva, there was a certain alter bochur there in the dorm. This fellow didn’t come to the yeshiva’s shachris very often, basically just like once in while to maintain his chazaka on his seat.

So one day the mashgiach comes to him, and says, “yankel, what about the shachris”? (that’s how the mashgiach spoke).

So Yankel says, “rebbe, ich g’paskened k’dvei rebbi yishmael.”

    1. This story is in the past.

    2. I was yentel.

    3. I made up the whole thing so I could say my joke.

yoya: Sorry, I can’t explain. I can’t even say what the background is or it will also ruin it. Maybe in a couple days.

yoya- It means I paskened according to rebi yishmael.

SaysMe: He’s also “admitted” his kids call him “Ima,” so wouldn’t be so sure…Click on his username if you haven’t already.

I only admitted that about one kid.

Yoya:- I 2nd your motion, as Yiddish is an archaic & outdated language. B’H I understand Ivrit, the language of the Torah and Nach & Mishno and numerous Sephorim.

“I’m looking for the sources. My bar ilan is down so I’m having to do some manual learning. It’s in the first perek of taanis I think.”

Definitely sounds like a boy to me!

I know. Isn’t that ridiculous? Just because one person’s friend’s friend thought I am a woman, they changed my name?

It is ridiculous, and quite entertaining. At last, you have managed to thoroughly confuse everyone. For all we know you’re an 11th grader in BY who happens to like halacha.

    yoya:

In kiddush levana, which most men said last night, there is a quote from the school of rabi yishmael that says that if we only had the opportunity to greet Hashem once a month, it would be enough for us.

    147,

Rashi often says “makshin haolam”. We know what “haolam” means as it clearly does not include amei horatzim, rather it referes to the learning world.

With that established, it is clear that yiddish is neither archaic nor outdated.

Torah, Nach and seforim kedoshim are most certainly NOT written in ivrit. No one claims (other than you apparently) that ivrit is Loshon hakodesh. They are vastly different.

Besides, how should I not say it in yiddish, if that is what the people in the story were speaking.

Paroh and Yosef are quoted in the Torah as conversing in Lashon Hakodesh even though we know that Paroh did not speak that language.

And look what the result of that was! Pharoh enslaved yosef’s descendants!

So did this bachur stand the whole shachris when he came? If so, does that count as a chazaka on his seat?

(Side note- you say that most men said kiddush levana last night, my shul said it a week ago Sunday night)

So Yankel says, “rebbe, ich g’paskened k’dvei rebbi yishmael.”

Therefore I don’t buy this story. Any natural yiddish speaker would have phrased this differently, either as “rebbe, ich pasken k’dvei rebbi yishmael.” or “rebbe, ich hab g’paskened k’dvei rebbi yishmael”.

Gamanit: Yeshiva bocherim who don’t know yiddish attempt to speak it anyway all the time. I know it’s painful to listen to (even for bad yiddish speakers like myself) but it happens.
