What is a classic Yeshivishe haircut? What kind of haircut do Yeshiva guys get today? Is it different in America and in Israel?

Size 2 and no “chup”. The very yeshivish get a size 1. (Chasidim get a size 0.)

What is “chup”? Isnt size 2 short for peyos reasons?

A chup would be the hair on the forehead. That needs to be all gone.

The peyos, obviously, should be untouched.

Behind the ear or out in front? I see a lot of people with a spiked up chup in front and their hat on the back of their forehead-is that the normal look nowadays?

Payos (behind the ear) should be cut off (unless you are a Brisker which makes it the bushier the better), and leave a side burn like Elvis. A small enough chup so the hat could carefully hang on an angle on the head, but not to much of an angle where it will look bumish.

Peyos in front is more yeshivish but behind the ears is very acceptable.

    A chup is a big no-no.

Isn’t a size #2 long enough for peyos, according to most opinions? I guess you could bend back a #2 hair if you used tweezers or have really good hand-eye coordination.

Basically you suggest a buzzcut with peyos behind the ear. What size buzz? Why do I see a lot of guys with chup?

Most yeshivish guys in most yeshjvish yeshivas (not all yeshivas are yeshivish as weird as that may sound) will have short hair in the front. Its also better to have short hair because long hair in the front can be a chatzizah a separation between your head and the tefillin shel rosh which is a problem. Guys who are more to the cool side will have some kind of chup or hairstyle thing going on in the front. Generally and I know there are exceptions, the longer the hair the more cool or bummy the guy is. So if you are a ben Torah who wants to look like one keep the hair short. No it doesn’t have to be military style it can be a 4 in the front and 3 or 2 on sides. The front shouldn’t be much bigger than a 4…

Thanks WIY! Great description. Isn’t a 2 on the sides too short for the peyos region especially on the sideburns and behind the ear lobe?

You are welcome. For those who have peyos behind the ear will only get a short cut on the parts that aren’t halachically peyos and the area that is peyos will maybe be trimmed and thinned out a drop it really depends on the person how thick he wants his peyos although some are makpid not to thin it out at all meaning if it gets long they may shorten the payos but won’t touch the area close to the head to thin it out in the peyos area. As for those who don’t have peyos behind or in front of ears but just sideburns can take a short haircut as long as his peyos extend to the end of the bone in middle of the ear. There’s no problem taking a 2.

What makes a person keep peyos behind the ear? Does he keep from the temple of the head or just close to the ear?

yeshivish do not get a 2 they get a 4 and scissor cut in front, they dont go with big chup but they dont get short haircuts

WIY, am I correct in assuming that a 1 is too short for the peyos region? Or do some hold that a 1 is OK? I never understood why we can use an electric shaver to get almost a complete shave for the whole beard but the peyos are treated differently.

How can barbers trim around the ear with a clipper less than a 2? I see barbers trim and fix that region with no clip on it.

“What makes a person keep peyos behind the ear?”

Family minhag, its more a chassidish thing so I guess it depends where your family originates.

Does he keep from the temple of the head or just close to the ear?

The proper thing would be to do the whole area that is halachically peyos, but since that looks very briskerish many dont do that. So really those strings behind their ears are meaningless.

yytz- the issurim are different for beard and hair on your head. beard is ossur w/ hashchasa and head w/ hakafa.

Why are the strands of hair behind the ear meaningless? It seems like a chumra to avoid the barber mistakenly cutting the portion behind the ear and the sideburns too short

    WIY:

Just to clarify that long hair is only a chatzitsa for tefilin if it is folded over, but if it is straight then it is a natural growth and is not considered a problem.

It is very possible that those who have a “CHUP” straighten the hair whilst putting on teffilin and brush/comb it after removing them.

so here are my thoughts….how about worrying more about the inside of the person rather than the outside. whether the person has a chup or is a #2 or #1 haircut.

find out what this person is in their heart and soul.

    appearances can be baloney.

i know people who have seen this first hand.

you can dress someone up to play a part but if it is not genuine it is worthless.

This guy WIY has it all wrong. He seems to come from some very “greasy” background at least from the way his posts read. No, many people in the yeshiva world do not follow his description. Many binei torah do not get an “over the top” where the barber mows the front with a 4 and the sides with a 3 or 2. Actually, getting a 4 on top and a 2 on the sides looks like a “step” something pretty unyeshivish. Some do the over the top thing, many get the front cut with scissors. WIY says that the front shouldn’t be longer than a 4 if you want to look like a ben torah. That is silly. A good barber can trim with scissors which suits benei torah fine. And there are many binei torah and talmedi chachamim that never sported peyos. You can get the ben torah look either way.

But the whole thing is overdone. What ever happened to the dictum in Avos, Do not stare at the barrel rather at what is in it?

The topic was yeshivish haircuts. A guy with a chup is not yeshivish. He can be a good boy but if his chup is important to him there’s something missing. If you cant understand that its your issue not mine. Its important to read the op and to see who and what I was responding to.

Can the term “greasy” be explained. Ive heard it offline and not from OTD , Chilonim or MO’s either

ZD – ‘Greasy’ is a derogatory term for people who are so frum that they don’t care about their physical appearance, thereby being less clean and more ‘greasy’ than other people. (Whether a statistically significant larger number of really frum people actually are more greasy or not is a different discussion)

“A guy with a chup is not yeshivish.”

If one would pull together in one place all definitions of “yeshivish” that are found in the coffee room, I have a feeling that just about the only ones who would qualify as yeshivish, are penguins and morticians who shave their heads.

Being a soldier in the Army requires a uniform.

    The uniform includes the haircut.

So does being a soldier in Hashem’s Army.

So stupid… the rules for being a soldier in Hashem’s army are called “Halacha,” tell me if you’ve heard of the concept! They are NOT determined by a bunch of nosy, overjudgmental, arrogant fools who are so insecure with themselves that they need to create superficial rules which they are comfortable abiding by to maintain their own “holier than thou” hargashas – their only source of self-esteem. I’m not saying someone can color their hair blue and grow a mohawk; such a person is also sick, but the whole concept of “yeshivishness” and having to fit an artificial mold that has no real signifiance except being the cookie-cutter style and fashion of a large percentage of today’s frum population is also a disease. People seek to be accepted, even if it is by doing something that they don’t necessarily agree with. Instead of standing up for what they believe in when they are right and not giving a care to those who cry foul with no justification, they just keep quiet and follow the masses resentfully because it’s just easier to do so and not stand out or draw unwanted attention. This is why I would NEVER live in an “in-town” community. The whole thing is such a shame; real values such as mussar, middos, and derech eretz have been replaced by a fake and worthless barometer of holiness known as “yeshivishness.”

But shouldnt someone have the look of a ben Torah? Wasn’t that the whole mahalach of Slobodka-to look in a respectable fashion.

    Public announcement:

Pleeeeeeeease do not judge the definition “Yeshivishness” based on this thread.

Yes there is a Yeshivish “look” but only some close minded people give it the “meaning” they claim it has. And those are the type of people who’d be afraid to be real anywhere, in any society.

Black hat wb- the mahalach of Slabodka was to have kavod habriyos and appreciate that people were created btzelem Elokim. That doesn’t translate into having everyone look, dress, act, and speak in an identical fashion. There is no one mahalach for looking dignified. You can look dignified in a tuxedo if you are at a high class event, you can do look dignified in slacks and an ironed button down shirt if you are an engineer at work, or you can look dignified in your combat uniform if you are a soldier. White shirt, black pants, and no chup haircut is just what the frum world recognizes to be a dignified look for those who have no particular alternative dress code, but nobody ever said there is anything inherently dignified about the way frum ppl dress. If they lived a couple hundred years ago they would look foolish, and so would Moshe Rabeinu if he appeared today. To say someone doesn’t fit with Slabodka because he wears a certain color or parts his hair a certain way is plain old ignorance.
