Chulent used to be an exclusive food for shabbos. Now, people eat chulent all the time. Any time. Day or night.
Yeshivos serve chulent many times a week. lunch, dinner, onegs, melava malka’s, snacks. You name it…
What do you think…?
May 20, 2009 3:28 am at 3:28 am #648091JaxMemberi could eat cholent everyday! i can’t get enough of it!
May 20, 2009 3:29 am at 3:29 am #648092kapustaParticipantnothing wrong with it, but isnt there supposed to be a food special for shabbos?
May 20, 2009 3:35 am at 3:35 am #648093postsemgirlMemberWhen I saw this thread I got so excited. My favorite food is chulent it is really really good! I could eat it everyday. The school where I teach (a boys school) gives chulent out as a prize to the kids and they love it.
-Kapusta the way chulent came into being is that the Tzidokim believed in only Torah shbichsav and they held that you can’t have a fire burning on Shabbos so the Chachamim said that we should eat something hot on Shabbos so that we show we are not like them. In poland and Russia they had a lot of potatoes and…….thats where chulent came from!
People think it’s strange that I am a girl and I love chulent but I don’t see that as a contridiction
May 20, 2009 3:37 am at 3:37 am #648094qawsMemberWhat’s with these mods? 42 can’t get enough kugel and 55 can’t get enough chulent! and 72(me)can’t get enough coffee
Do the mods get food at home?
May 20, 2009 3:38 am at 3:38 am #648095kapustaParticipantpostsem, yes, I’m not saying because of that, just any food thats especially for shabbos.
May 20, 2009 3:41 am at 3:41 am #648096kapustaParticipantwhich mod cant get enough kapusta? trust me when I say that we all have more than enough kapusta
May 20, 2009 3:43 am at 3:43 am #648097JaxMemberqaws: the bosses always shnore food! 😉
May 20, 2009 3:43 am at 3:43 am #648098postsemgirlMemberkapusta-I didn’t think that there is food that you can only eat on Shabbos. In my house we eat leftovers and that is food from Shabbos. I don’t know about you.
May 20, 2009 3:44 am at 3:44 am #648099AnonymousInactiveQaws- The candy machines at YW headquarters have been broken for a while so we are stuck with chulent, kugel (and coffee). :}
May 20, 2009 3:47 am at 3:47 am #648100JaxMemberpostsemgirl: my sisters love chulent too, they can’t get enough of the way i make it!
May 20, 2009 3:47 am at 3:47 am #648101kapustaParticipantuh oh, am I on a mods bad side? (sniffle, sniffle)
postsem, I’m not saying that, I mean shabbos is supposed to be special, like special food you wouldnt have during the week. Cake, better wine, etc
55, try some lasagna.

May 20, 2009 3:51 am at 3:51 am #648103JewessMemberOh, there’s a chuent thread too! Haha.
What day is it today?
May 20, 2009 4:04 am at 4:04 am #648104JaxMemberames: nope, not one bit!
May 20, 2009 4:06 am at 4:06 am #648105YW Moderator-72Participantok, this week I will do something diff, instead of putting my kugel in my chicken soup, I will have my kugel on a plate and I will pour a few spoonfuls of soup on top of it and have a carrot and celery from the soup on the side…
May 20, 2009 4:06 am at 4:06 am #648106postsemgirlMemberames- If it’s good why change?
kapusta- yea I get it
jax- you’re total right. Guys make a better chulent! And don’t worry about your ego! My husband better know how to make chulent!
May 20, 2009 4:07 am at 4:07 am #648107postsemgirlMembermod 72- lol!
May 20, 2009 4:08 am at 4:08 am #648108May 20, 2009 4:09 am at 4:09 am #648109JaxMember72: have you ever tried putting potatoes in the chicken soup while it cooks the soup?! while adding all the soup condiments, add a like 2-3 whole potatoes! it tastes delicious! & can also be served as a side dish too!
May 20, 2009 4:12 am at 4:12 am #648110JaxMemberJewess: everyday is chulent day!
May 20, 2009 4:21 am at 4:21 am #648111JewessMemberAmes, do you eat mazza every week?
Jax, yeah right.
May 20, 2009 4:30 am at 4:30 am #648112JewessMemberAmes, so that’s something we could eat every week and not get bored of. 🙂
May 20, 2009 4:31 am at 4:31 am #648113kapustaParticipantAmes, kugel is a staple, you have variety with meat, chicken and whatever, but not potato kugel.
May 20, 2009 4:35 am at 4:35 am #648114JewessMemberIt’s so funny to me. I never ate potato kugel growing up and I still never really had a good piece (I guess, Jax), but my siblings who also never ate potato kugel love it. I guess I’m kugel deprived.
May 20, 2009 4:37 am at 4:37 am #648115May 20, 2009 4:38 am at 4:38 am #648116JewessMemberThis is so confusing. I posted a kugel comment in the cholent thread.
By the way, is it CHOLENT or CHULENT?
May 20, 2009 4:39 am at 4:39 am #648117JewessMemberAmes, I know I take breaks from it, but technically I could eat it every week.
May 20, 2009 4:39 am at 4:39 am #648118postsemgirlMemberjewess- oy! deprived child!

May 20, 2009 4:42 am at 4:42 am #648122JewessMemberI had cholent on Pesach once with matzah cooked in it. It was mushy and gross.

May 20, 2009 1:37 pm at 1:37 pm #648135noitallmrParticipantHa Ha- you people made my day- starting a thread on Chulent (cholent doesn’t quite have the same ring to it!!!)
