April 24, 2015 1:30 pm at 1:30 pm #1083476Daniell11MemberThe Gateshead community is extremely choshuv. Move there.
April 24, 2015 1:49 pm at 1:49 pm #1083477zahavasdadParticipantGateshead, Manchester and Golders Green / Hampstead (London)
April 24, 2015 1:58 pm at 1:58 pm #1083478yentachayaParticipantObviously this decision is totally yours and has nothing to do with me, but why would you move to a place with such open anti-semitism in the recent months? I know that I would be afraid to move there. People living in England keep saying that they don’t see a future for themselves there. If I were you, I would try to find out specific people in the frum communities (London, Gateshead, etc.) and interview them about what it’s like to live there. I’ve never been to England so all I’m telling you is based on what I hear. My friend in London keeps me updated and I constantly hear things on the news.
Hatzlacha Rabbah!
April 24, 2015 2:06 pm at 2:06 pm #1083479zahavasdadParticipantIve been to Europe quite a few times (including the UK) and did not see any anti-semitism and Ive been to most of the big European Cities.
I even saw a T-shirt that said Belgium stands with Israel (This was in Brussels) last summer
April 24, 2015 2:30 pm at 2:30 pm #1083480ED IT ORParticipantIt really depends on how you define Choshuv, in the really Charedi comunities you have a few choices:
London:
Golders green – expensive
Stamford hill – chassidish and expensive
Edgeware – a healthy mix
Manchester:
Prestwich – Younger Cheaper
Salford – a healthy mix young old and cheapish
Gateshead: – Small – only around 600 families, Cheapest though.
Its definitely worth visiting all these comunities to get a feel before choosing.
April 24, 2015 2:35 pm at 2:35 pm #1083481A jew who caresParticipantThere is no more antisemitism there than anywhere else (firsthand experience)
April 24, 2015 4:39 pm at 4:39 pm #1083482zahavasdadParticipantBe aware that Gateshead is like 400 Miles from London and in a pretty drab area
April 24, 2015 4:54 pm at 4:54 pm #1083483MameshhTov98MemberThanks ever so much for all your fantastic help!See, my wife has just placed a bid on a boyis in a city called Leeds – anyone know anything about the Kehillah there? Our second choice appears to be Gateshead
April 24, 2015 5:30 pm at 5:30 pm #1083484Daniell11MemberI hear your decision. Leeds is quite yeshivish close to Manchester and I hear there’s a new kolel. I do have a good friend in Leeds who is quite yeshivish. But if you want your children to grow up in a frum environment than if I were you I’d go to Gateshead which has many good yeshivas. Obviously its up to you but your desicion is your desicion. Hatzlocha and have a good shabbos.
April 25, 2015 7:07 pm at 7:07 pm #1083485A jew who caresParticipantThe Yeshivish community in Leeds is TINY. Most yeshivish people living there are doing so for kiruv.
April 26, 2015 3:30 am at 3:30 am #1083486147ParticipantGateshead is like 400 Miles from London Zhavasdad:- I assume you mixed up kilometers with miles as 400 kilometers is 248&1/2 miles, and even this is underestimated, as London to Gateshead is approximately 270 miles=434&1/2 kilometers. {Measured from Golders Green, slightly nearer than being measured from Piccadilly Circus in Central London}.
Mameshtov please bear in mind that Motzei Shabbos in Leeds at height of summer is not until 11.08PM, so this may be past your bed time and may make you wish to reconsider moving to Leeds.
April 26, 2015 3:54 am at 3:54 am #1083487cozimjewishMember147 you seem to be living in Israel Australia and England!
April 26, 2015 5:02 am at 5:02 am #1083488147Participantcozimjewish:- Your assertion is on the ball, and so absolutely correct. BTW:- In light of this, I usually end up blessing Birkas haIlanos twice annually, once in Tishri whilst in Australia, & once in Nisson whilst in England or Israel.
I also usually manage to coordinate my schedule, to be in Australia over Shiva Ossur bTamuz, and to be in England over Assoro bTeves.
But the flip-back cozimjewish is having to file taxes in 3 countries, and I require the specialized services of an International accountant, as this is quite complex to say the least.
April 26, 2015 7:43 am at 7:43 am #1083489cozimjewishMember147 – I can’t work out if you’re joking or not….
April 26, 2015 4:35 pm at 4:35 pm #1083490147Participantcozimjewish:- “Your assertion is on the ball, and so absolutely correct.” Implies that I am serious and this is for real, and am not joking.
April 27, 2015 7:10 am at 7:10 am #1083491cozimjewishMemberGood thing u aren’t in England over Yom Kippur :-/
April 27, 2015 12:21 pm at 12:21 pm #1083492ED IT ORParticipantFor that matter scotland…
April 27, 2015 6:27 pm at 6:27 pm #1083493Daniell11MemberSurely one should want yom Kippur to go on for aslong as possible
April 27, 2015 11:05 pm at 11:05 pm #1083494ED IT ORParticipantDUH! it just starts later… *Snort*
May 29, 2015 1:14 pm at 1:14 pm #1083495MameshhTov98MemberJust to update all the Chevra…
We have actually officially moved to Leeds 3 weeks ago following an amazing opportunity for me and the Mishpocha. I have to tell you all…its fantastic here. The week we moved to Leeds,it turned out we had been the forth frum young family to move to the Kehillah that week! We were stunned! Now, 3 weeks into our new lives in England, I can firmly say how delighted I ammove have moved here. I already have an inspirational chevruta who is also studying in the new, exciting Leeds Kollel, started attending the community’s Mishmar session on a Thursday loiloh at one of the Leeds shuls and the Mishpocha have been invited to join one of the Rebbonim of one of the Leeds Shuls for Friday night dinner tonight!
What I’ve found particularly interesting here in Leeds is the fascinating mix of Yehudim. Whilst there is the less religious side of the neighbourhood (like you get everywhere else), there is an ever-growing population of both Yeshivish and Religious zionist families coming to the city.
So we couldn’t be happier!
Thanks for all your support and advice and may we all come together in the coming of Moshiach! Omayn.
