I am 23 years old working in a pharmacy in lakewood. I am considering going back to college in september. I need some advice on what to major in. I have 2 appointments within the next week and a half with career counselors. Anyone have any advice for me?
When i went the 1st time I switched majors to many times. If i go back I must decide beforehand what I am going to major in a have a plan of how to obtain the degree. I am not a science and math person experience has taught me that. any advice?

June 22, 2014 4:19 pm at 4:19 pm #1020742dhl144MemberI would like a degree in the medical field. Pharmacist wasnt an option for me bc too much science and I heard that social work doesnt have much money in the field. But is that a contradiction to believing that heashem provides parnassah? i gotta do what makes sense though
June 22, 2014 4:24 pm at 4:24 pm #1020743OURtorahParticipantdhl- Don’t try to get the easy way out. Soceity might tell you that doing the fastest program is the “frum” thing to do. You need to do what makes you happy and where you think your strengths lie. If you love interacting with people then consider not doing a behind the desk job. If you want to heal people and help reduce their pain consider a job in the health field.
At the end of the day, you want to come home with a smile on your face, and feel accomplished. Don’t let soceity tell you what to do, don’t let us tell you what to do. Don’t take the frum way out. Even if its a longer program, or more money, if you will be amazing at it, Hashem will help you. Have emunah, and really looking into yor own kochos. Hatzlacha rabbah
June 22, 2014 4:30 pm at 4:30 pm #1020744OURtorahParticipantdhl- the options are endless: Occupational therapy, Physical therapy, Physicains assistant, Doctor, Nurse, Nurse practitoner, social work, psychologist, psychotherapist etc.
look up all these jobs, try to shadow people or call them and see what they do.
June 22, 2014 5:44 pm at 5:44 pm #1020745popa_bar_abbaParticipantCharlie, that is terrible advice.
OP is 23 and looking for a career and fast. He is not 17 and looking for a “well rounded (read: garbage) learning experience.”
He is looking for a job that interests him, not a study that interests him. While that might overlap, it certainly is not the same.
June 22, 2014 6:22 pm at 6:22 pm #1020746akupermaParticipant1. Pick a career first, major based on career.
2. If you don’t like science, and are looking for an easy major, don’t expect it to have a high income. The easier the major, the more likely it is to attract many people, and therefore the lower the pay (cf. law of supply and demand)

Why is that a stirah to what Charlie said? He needs to find something which will be realistic and satisfying as a career, AND which he will enjoy studying, otherwise he might never get to the career stage.
June 22, 2014 11:07 pm at 11:07 pm #1020748NechomahParticipantI don’t understand how OP expects to get a job in the medical field considering the fact that, as he puts it, he is not a science and math person. Medical fields involve learning almost exclusively these subjects. If you can find something in the medical field that does not, then run after that option, as it would be suited to you. Otherwise, forget about medicine and find something that suits what you ARE good at, which you did not say in your posts.
June 22, 2014 11:42 pm at 11:42 pm #1020749charliehallParticipant“I would like a degree in the medical field.”
If you don’t like science, that is NOT a good idea. All allied medical fields are highly based on science.
“OP is 23 and looking for a career”
That wasn’t what he said in the OP.
June 23, 2014 2:40 am at 2:40 am #1020750golferParticipantOURT, which options are endless? How do you expect the OP to get a degree as – OT, PT, PA, Dr, nurse, without studying (& getting well above passing grades) in science & math?
June 23, 2014 3:20 am at 3:20 am #1020751OURtorahParticipantGolfer- Sorry I read it wrong- I thot he said he liked science and math and just didnt want to do pharmacy. Thank you for pointing that out
Dhl- dont let time be a factor. People start school when they are 40, 50 etc. You need ti do what you love and its going to come with alot of effort and hard work. If science is not what you like you are not going to like working in the medical field. Or if it is what you like but you arent doing well, consider trying a new work ethic or working harder. Many people do badly simply cuz they get lazy and have poor time managment skills. Anything you are going to do will need time patience and alot of effort! Hatzlacha rabbah!
