haha
but seriously- greek is NOT the same as regular! i hate regular yogurt and i love greek. It’s not “cool”- it’s really an excellent food.
November 19, 2013 7:29 pm at 7:29 pm #989013popa_bar_abbaParticipantplite: You can get normal fat-free yogurt as well. That isn’t what the straining does. You are being fed garbage, both literally and metaphorically.
(But you are correct that the protein ratio in greek yogurt is much higher)
November 19, 2013 8:36 pm at 8:36 pm #989014pliteMemberthe straining takes out the acid whey. To make it clear, popa, here are the reasons I like greek over regular:
1. thicker (almost like ice cream)
2. very filling (from protein)
3. versatile (I made a salad dressing from greek once!)
None of these points are contestable! :p
November 19, 2013 9:43 pm at 9:43 pm #989015writersoulParticipantplite: I actually really like regular yogurt. I eat Dannon vanilla all the time when I’m too lazy to eat a real lunch. I just find Greek yogurt too sour, especially as I don’t like fruit flavors so I generally have vanilla. I even dumped about a cup of chocolate syrup into a Chobani vanilla and it was still really not to my taste…
November 20, 2013 4:00 am at 4:00 am #989016Torah613TorahParticipantIt’s a blessing to the lactose intolerant, since Greek yogurt is lower in lactose than other yogurts.
November 20, 2013 2:23 pm at 2:23 pm #989017popa_bar_abbaParticipantmaybe it’s a curse to the lactose intolerant, because it teases them that then they think they can almost eat it.
November 20, 2013 4:26 pm at 4:26 pm #989018pliteMemberMaybe… I tried mehadrin this morning (coffee) and it tasted funny. Definitely did not enjoy it.
November 20, 2013 4:29 pm at 4:29 pm #989019pliteMemberWriterSoul: I can’t eat plain greek as well, too sour…
But I like adding fruits or chocolate chips with splenda or honey. I like it like it like that.
November 20, 2013 5:44 pm at 5:44 pm #989020popa_bar_abbaParticipantI just ate a chobani fat free greek yogurt with pomegranate for lunch. It had pomegranate seeds on the bottom, which seemed strange to me when I crunched them. But it was good.
November 20, 2013 7:47 pm at 7:47 pm #989021WIYMemberPopa
That’s enough of a lunch for you? I would be starving if that’s all I ate.
November 20, 2013 7:58 pm at 7:58 pm #989022popa_bar_abbaParticipantHmm. maybe I’ll eat another mango one.
November 21, 2013 2:50 pm at 2:50 pm #989023pliteMemberPopa: So did you try the mango one? It’s interesting, Chobani actually ran a whole campaign specifically to convince people that the seeds in the pom. were delicious- sales in that flavor had dropped b/c people did not like the texture…
November 21, 2013 3:40 pm at 3:40 pm #989024popa_bar_abbaParticipantNo I haven’t tried the mango one yet. I sure hope it doesn’t have whole mango’s with the pits inside.
November 21, 2013 5:33 pm at 5:33 pm #989025miritchkaMembertried greek yogurt – not a fan. However, Normans lowfat yogurt – not the Bio one – is absolutely delicious! I have never tasted a yogurt that good! I usually only eat 80 calorie yogurts, but one time i accidentally grabbed a lowfat normans and after i took one spoonful, i was hooked!
November 21, 2013 5:56 pm at 5:56 pm #989026pliteMemberHaha!! I hear Norman’s Apple and Honey has a hive…
November 21, 2013 6:20 pm at 6:20 pm #989027popa_bar_abbaParticipantI hear it has Norman
November 21, 2013 6:27 pm at 6:27 pm #989028pliteMemberIs that the 80 Lite, or the regular low fat?
November 21, 2013 9:06 pm at 9:06 pm #989029🐵 ⌨ GamanitParticipantI decided to try it out… it’s really not bad. I think I’ll try it out again tomorrow in a different flavor.
November 21, 2013 9:10 pm at 9:10 pm #989030WIYMemberI want some Cholov Yisroel geek yogurt.
November 21, 2013 9:22 pm at 9:22 pm #989033golferParticipantHave any of you done a side by side taste test of Chobani, Mehadrin, Norman’s, Greek yogurts?
(Please don’t make me add this to the list of questions-left-hanging-unanswered on the CR. It’s getting too long…)
November 21, 2013 9:29 pm at 9:29 pm #989034☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantGolfer, I did a Norman’s/Mehadrin side by side. Mehadrin was a bit thicker, and Norman’s a bit sweeter, but I enjoyed both.
November 21, 2013 9:33 pm at 9:33 pm #989035☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI want some Cholov Yisroel geek yogurt.
Apparently, geek yogurt, at least for the week, doesn’t have active cultures.
November 22, 2013 5:07 pm at 5:07 pm #989036pliteMemberI did a mehadrin/normans/chobani taste test, on your dare! In mehadrin vs norman, normans won hands down with taste. Mehadrins flavor are honestly not that great. They taste like jelly ice pops. Norman’s is definetely more authentic on the flavor. In terms of texture, they both are thick and creamy, but mehadrin adds modified food starch to theirs to make it thick, and normans doesn’t (in their original- non 100 calories- greek), so….
Chobani was, as usual, awesome. But I’m pleasantly surpised to find that norman’s is a close second. They really are the chobani of greek. cholov yisroel sonsumers really are not missing out on much (besides maybe additional flavors) by eating normans!
November 22, 2013 5:44 pm at 5:44 pm #989037popa_bar_abbaParticipantUpdate: I ate the mango chobani. Ny notes are below:
Taste: very good, nice mango flavor well balanced by the yogurt.
Consistency:Good, appoximately the consistency of horse manure on a hot day.
Color: cow urine, after mixing in the mango.
November 23, 2013 1:04 am at 1:04 am #989039squeakParticipantAnd you didnt even mention the smell….
November 25, 2013 2:59 pm at 2:59 pm #989040pliteMemberDid anyone try normans light? I’ve only tried their original. Is it worth the money?
November 26, 2013 12:04 am at 12:04 am #989041writersoulParticipantPBA: I was going to ask where you got this up-close-and-personal access to horse manure, but then I figured it’s probably the same place you encountered cow urine and I decided it was a dumb question.
Have people had success with putting sugar in Greek yogurts to make them less sour? I really want to like them, but…
November 26, 2013 2:02 am at 2:02 am #989042☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantPlite, I tasted the Norman’s lite coffee yogurt. The Splenda didn’t work for me. The regular is better (although I haven’t seen Norman’s coffee regular).
November 26, 2013 4:54 am at 4:54 am #989043Gryffindorable GirlMemberI heard Norman is making a blood orange flavor! Definitely sounds interesting!
November 26, 2013 6:11 am at 6:11 am #989044☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThe blood orange was really good.
November 26, 2013 9:34 am at 9:34 am #989045Geordie613ParticipantMehadrin available in UK now.
November 26, 2013 3:55 pm at 3:55 pm #989046pliteMemberWriter Soul: I always add splenda or honey to Norman’s plain greek, it tastes awesome. I don’t like it plain, too sour. I usually add fruit too.
November 26, 2013 9:38 pm at 9:38 pm #989047streekgeekParticipantApparently, geek yogurt, at least for the week, doesn’t have active cultures.
DaasYochid – That’s the first cryptic post of yours I actually understood 😉
April 27, 2017 12:12 pm at 12:12 pm #1264210☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI don’t remember what I meant.
But I like Norman’s Creamy Blends.
