Another woman and i were having a discussion with someone at work. he is part of a chassidik group. (we also are a bit chassidik but not from the same group) the topic of cholov yisroel came up. when he referred to something that wasn’t cholov yisroel he kind of stopped in mid sentence, right after the word “cholov” – so i said “stam?” to which he responded “yeah”. then later he used the expression cholov akum – i said “don’t you mean stam?” he said that cholov stam is a made up word. i explained what i thought was the diff between stam and akum. he still maintained they were the same thing. so i asked if he means that anything that’s not cholov yisroel is treif? at first he didn’t answer and then kind of said “no” (very hesitantly). we could tell he meant “yes”
conversation ended and i went back into my office. the other woman then came into my office and said she felt so badly – she feels like she’s eating treif. i gave her examples of some ppl whom we both know who eat cholov stam. i also mentioned that R’ Moshe Feinstein ZT”L – while he held only cholov yisroel -said that we don’t have to.
then my husband asked his rav if he feels it’s treif. the rav said that chassidim do consider it treif (this rav is chassidish).
so i’d like to hear what ppl on the cr have to say. thanks.

Almost nobody in my community keeps chalav Yisrael, and the major kashrut agencies and the local vaad allows non-CY dairy products. In the US no commercial milk from any animals other than cows, sheep, or goats are permitted to be transported across state lines, so it is basically impossible to substitute non-kosher milk for kosher milk. There is still the concern of non-kosher additives, which has occasionally happened; since all milk has additives you still need supervision. (Note: You an find imported camel milk in some specialty stores, and at a few farms.)

If she can read Hebrew, get her a copy of the Shulchan Aruch (Y”D 115) and the Teshuvos of the Iggros Moshe (Y”D section 1, pages 82-89). They can be found at http://www.hebrewbooks.org
Here’s some informative articles:

The more she knows, the more comfortable she will feel.
