plonis, how come you spelled it kOmatz?
You can’t win like that 🙂
September 25, 2009 3:48 pm at 3:48 pm #671092postsemgirlMemberJax- you are soooooooooooooooo lucky! I’m not getting CHULENT this week untill Shabbos day!
September 25, 2009 7:34 pm at 7:34 pm #671093NY MomMemberbein_hasdorim: “besides for fried onions beans barley & geshmakeh meat,”
Which cut of meat is this exactly?
How come I never see it at MY butcher?
Is he holding out on me or what?
September 27, 2009 4:08 am at 4:08 am #671094pookieMemberi had a cholent this shabbos out of this world honestly
September 29, 2009 3:10 pm at 3:10 pm #671095mepalMemberYou must’ve been by my table.
September 29, 2009 4:45 pm at 4:45 pm #671096JaxMemberfor some reason right after a fast chulent doesn’t excite me now!
September 29, 2009 4:59 pm at 4:59 pm #671097haifagirlParticipantIs that koogel as in good or koogel as in food?
September 29, 2009 5:14 pm at 5:14 pm #671098bein_hasdorimParticipantsqueak said; “Perhaps that’s why you guys don’t make it”?
….I take great offense to that!
1) I’ll have you know I make my own chulents.
2) Most of my friends make their own chulents as well!
3) (& this will get me in trouble) It is well know fact that most of the world
renown (best)chefs are ALL MEN!!!
4) All the best catered chUlents are made by men (maybe mexican lol!) but men.
NY Mom: Sorry, but it’s the good stuff. (under the counter)
you have to ask for it! But dont say it too loud just creep up to the counter
looking shifty, give the nod & mumble, Geb Mir Di Geshmakeh Fleish(meat).
However, if your butcher calls it chOlent, he’s not holding out on you,
He just aint got it.
September 29, 2009 6:58 pm at 6:58 pm #671099squeakParticipantbh, I apologize for giving you offense. However, unless you are a yekke I was not referring to you. I said that the reason why yekkes don’t make cholent is because they’d call it chow lint, oh never mind – just accept my apology 🙂
September 29, 2009 11:11 pm at 11:11 pm #671100shtarkbocherMemberi pronounce it chu lint and im yekkish
September 30, 2009 1:08 am at 1:08 am #671102bein_hasdorimParticipantsqueak: I aint a yekke, I take great offense to that!
j/k 🙂 we’re cool!
shtarkbocher: really? I wud think a yekke calls it chunt!
cuz It’s takes to much time to say chUlent!
Do you wait like 3 hours between chulent & cheese cake?
September 30, 2009 2:01 am at 2:01 am #671103mybatMemberMmmm… Cheese cake…..

September 30, 2009 2:39 pm at 2:39 pm #671105squeakParticipantLet me know when they start allowing yekke jokes

September 30, 2009 2:54 pm at 2:54 pm #671107squeakParticipantWho resigned and made you mod?
September 30, 2009 3:11 pm at 3:11 pm #671108mepalMemberYou never mentioned that the question was aimed at a mod. You only mentioned yekke’s there, so I figured I’d give you the go ahead.
September 30, 2009 6:58 pm at 6:58 pm #671109bein_hasdorimParticipantmepal;
& squeak; (if ur not offended)
Kabols Torah was called for 8:00am sharp!
The yekkes showed up at 7:59, so they were left with yekkishkeit,
The litvishe showed up at 8:00, so they were left with the torah,
by the time the chassidim showed up.. it was already 8:30 & everyone
was singing & dancing with joy upon receiving the holy torah!
…so the chassidim were left with the singing & dancing.
September 30, 2009 7:03 pm at 7:03 pm #671110mepalMembernah, you killed the joke…
September 30, 2009 7:05 pm at 7:05 pm #671111squeakParticipantnah, you killed the joke
understatement of the year….
Besides, that’s not a yekke joke – it’s a Lubavitch joke
September 30, 2009 7:08 pm at 7:08 pm #671112mepalMembersqueak, we’re all awaiting some yekke humor from you.
September 30, 2009 7:10 pm at 7:10 pm #671113bein_hasdorimParticipantOy Vey! it goes better in yiddish, & it is somewhat lost in translation.
(or I just plain messed it up!)
but it would seem it is Litvishe joke not a Lubavitche joke.
September 30, 2009 7:13 pm at 7:13 pm #671114bein_hasdorimParticipantsqueak: if you post a better version, we’ll put in a request to the mods
to cut my botched attempt (if that is possible)
September 30, 2009 7:21 pm at 7:21 pm #671115squeakParticipantIt is a Lubavitch joke if you tell the whole thing. It’s not a very nice joke, so I have no interest in posting it.
Thank you for saving wear and tear on the delete button.
September 30, 2009 8:23 pm at 8:23 pm #671116mepalMemberwear and tear? Can we eventually break it?? Please?
October 1, 2009 1:37 am at 1:37 am #671117bein_hasdorimParticipantsqueak: I guess I never heard the whole joke!
mods: from what I can tell u prob hav to replace it 3 times a day! 😉
October 1, 2009 1:53 am at 1:53 am #671118haifagirlParticipantI’d really like to hear the whole joke.
October 1, 2009 2:01 am at 2:01 am #671119mepalMemberBut if ultimately it makes fun of particular groups, its best not said at all.
October 1, 2009 2:31 am at 2:31 am #671120JaxMembersaw this at some place recently!

October 1, 2009 2:44 am at 2:44 am #671122plonisalmonisMemberA tzadi with a streichel is a “Ch” (as in cholent) sound.
October 1, 2009 4:19 am at 4:19 am #671123sunflowerMembersqueak, wow i am very impressed! anyways as this is a cholent thread i say everyone mostly says theirs is most heaven. and to all you fellow sefardim, i think the little difference is the ussue with the eggs in it no? a morrocan friend of mine = her cholent is like this- a big bowl of beans, an big bowl of meat/bones, and bowl of potatoes. a persian friend of ours cholent tasted heaven and spicy! its amazing how there are so many varieties!
October 1, 2009 5:10 am at 5:10 am #671124haifagirlParticipantBut is the vav and oo or an oh? (Sorry, I don’t remember the Hebrew names of the sounds.)
October 1, 2009 7:48 pm at 7:48 pm #671126squeakParticipantOn the subject, eggs in the cholent are great! Why eat plain eggsalad, when you can have cholent eggsalad is my feeling 🙂
October 1, 2009 8:56 pm at 8:56 pm #671127JaxMembersqueak: we put potatoes in our chulent! 😉
October 1, 2009 8:59 pm at 8:59 pm #671128mepalMemberYeah, I’ve heard about the eggs in the cholent before (you keep them whole ;))
October 1, 2009 9:00 pm at 9:00 pm #671129bein_hasdorimParticipantsqueak: you must be chasidish!
October 1, 2009 9:01 pm at 9:01 pm #671130squeakParticipantJax – so how’s the potato salad?
October 1, 2009 9:02 pm at 9:02 pm #671131mepalMemberNo b_h, he’s yekkish.
October 1, 2009 9:02 pm at 9:02 pm #671132JaxMembersqueak: i’ve never liked potato salad!
October 1, 2009 9:04 pm at 9:04 pm #671133squeakParticipantmepal – please no personal info in the CR. Besides, you don’t want to end up like Joseph in the Random Questions thread when he made the same assumption……
October 1, 2009 9:06 pm at 9:06 pm #671134areivimzehlazehParticipantsqueak- if you leave out the meat you can have one big chulent tupp of a meal (kinda like the tashlich/kaporos combo)
Recipe for chulent tupp shabbos meal:
fish (any type)
carrot
eggs
onions
cold cuts (any type)
some lettuce (for the ladies)
beans
potatoes
parve kishke
kugel
coleslaw
compote
ketchup- optional
BBQ sauce- optional
salt, pepper & paprika to taste
Put all ingredients in pot erev shabbos, keep hot plate on medium setting, and by the time shabbos day comes around- presto- you’ve got your entire meal.
**Serve with barf bags.
October 1, 2009 9:06 pm at 9:06 pm #671135bein_hasdorimParticipantJax: hey whats up? Although potatoes rock in a chulent, Idk if they would compliment
a potato salad. 🙂
squeak: do u put mayo in the eggsalad, or oil?
October 1, 2009 9:07 pm at 9:07 pm #671136areivimzehlazehParticipantb_h: I’m not following your line of thought there… (eggs= chassidish?)
October 1, 2009 9:08 pm at 9:08 pm #671137squeakParticipantareivim – too bad I follow the Shulchan Aruch, who doesn’t want me to put the fish in with the cold cuts. Or are the cold cuts parve too? If so, serve with extra barf bags.
October 1, 2009 9:11 pm at 9:11 pm #671138JaxMemberbein_hasdorim: hey! it’s Thursday and i’m having Chulent & hot potato keeegil for dinner later! should i count you in?!
October 1, 2009 9:12 pm at 9:12 pm #671139areivimzehlazehParticipantsqueak: no- they’re soy 😉
October 1, 2009 9:12 pm at 9:12 pm #671140mepalMemberB_H: eeeeeeeeeew!
squeak: I apologize.
October 1, 2009 9:14 pm at 9:14 pm #671141JaxMemberareivim: since your talking about soy….i heard that Freund’s Fish store on boro park now makes Gefilta Fish sushi!
October 1, 2009 9:14 pm at 9:14 pm #671142mepalMemberDid I just hear sushi?
