September 22, 2009 12:48 am at 12:48 am #670995mosheroseMemberI remember reading an interesting story about R. Kanievsky who determined that someone sitting at a shabbos table wasn’t jewish because he did not eat cholent.

September 22, 2009 9:27 pm at 9:27 pm #671017YW Moderator-80MemberchOlent!!
September 22, 2009 9:33 pm at 9:33 pm #671018YW Moderator-80Memberor CHOLNT is actually preferable
September 22, 2009 9:48 pm at 9:48 pm #671019postsemgirlMemberBeinhasdorim- welcome! I have been in the same situation myself many times.
80- CHULENT all the way!!
I’m getting hungry just thinking about it.
September 22, 2009 9:53 pm at 9:53 pm #671020areivimzehlazehParticipantjmatt= JayMatt ??
No, I checked, two different people, I wonder if jaymatt means something…80
September 22, 2009 9:53 pm at 9:53 pm #671021YW Moderator-80MemberWe haven’t had a formal poll here in a long time. I wonder if the boss (YW Editor) would run one on this topic (the correct spelling of cholent). I’m not going to approach his highness directly. (We know what happened last time someone tried that) but as we know he sees all on YW.
September 22, 2009 9:57 pm at 9:57 pm #671022areivimzehlazehParticipantI offer to be the korbon:
Dear Sir Editer,
With all due respect, there has been a request put in to take a YWN poll on the official spelling of Chulent.
It is obviously spelled as stated above, but for some strange reason we are experiencing opposition from none other then an esteemed moderator!
Please squelch this uprising at the start so that we do not need to deal with any un-pleasantries later on.
Very respectfully yours,
– areivim
NOT EDITED, (but it should have been)…80
September 22, 2009 10:11 pm at 10:11 pm #671023NY MomMemberWhat is the origin for the word chulent?
(I think I once heard it explained, but can’t think of it.)
September 22, 2009 10:21 pm at 10:21 pm #671024Y.W. EditorKeymasterHow about a taste-a-thon for Cholent?
September 22, 2009 10:22 pm at 10:22 pm #671025mybatMemberHere they say chont. I can’t stand it! Its CHULENT!!
September 22, 2009 10:25 pm at 10:25 pm #671026jmattMemberwhoops… sorry about that. as a “lurker” i should have known to pick a different mane.
and i think it means hot. (like how “nonchalant” means cool)
September 22, 2009 10:25 pm at 10:25 pm #671027YW Moderator-80MemberI have no idea what the Editor is talking about, but notice how the final arbiter of all things on YW spelled CHOLENT.
WITH AN O !!
September 22, 2009 10:25 pm at 10:25 pm #671028NY MomMemberWow! Mod 80, I guess you were right – Sir Editor does “see all” on YWN!
But does he know all? The origin of the word?
September 22, 2009 10:27 pm at 10:27 pm #671032areivimzehlazehParticipant[overnight]
September 22, 2009 10:30 pm at 10:30 pm #671033areivimzehlazehParticipantI will only participate in the taste-o-thon of Chulent- not cholent (yik)
Mee la’Chulent aylaiy!
Luckily I passed the Moderation Restraint Course with Advanced Lab.
I am trying so hard not to edit these posts. I may need some counseling. (Or a 2 week vacation.)…80
September 22, 2009 10:36 pm at 10:36 pm #671034NY MomMemberAnd by the way don’t let anyone tell you that the words in blue were added by 80, because I assure you 80 would never stoop to anything so low. And I know 80 very very well. The finest moderator around these parts, I must say.
September 22, 2009 10:44 pm at 10:44 pm #671035NY MomMemberWould any discussion of this culinary delight be complete without a reference to Country Yossi’s classic song?
Everybody now! “Cholent! Cholent! Ch-ch-ch-cholent cholent…”
(I am alternating spelling for the sake of shalom.)
September 23, 2009 2:57 am at 2:57 am #671036NY MomMemberMod 80 – LOL!!! I’d say that 2 week vacation would probably be a good idea for you… 😉
BTW, did everyone stop posting on this thread because a female started “singing”? If so, please mochel me :p I will endeavor to restrain myself though it won’t be easy. (I really like that song)
September 23, 2009 3:08 am at 3:08 am #671037pookieMemberwho cares how u spell cholent the important thing is that it should taste good
September 23, 2009 3:12 am at 3:12 am #671038mepalMemberalternating spelling? Is someone playing tricks?
I think it depends on your affiliation. The chasiddim would call it chUlent, the litvaks, chOlent. Sfardim? You?
September 23, 2009 3:44 am at 3:44 am #671039NY MomMembermepal: Sephardim eat chaMIM (emphasis on the 2nd syllable)
