Quite a few of my teachers have told me that I’m eligable to enter the chidon hatanach. I’m from a very frum Bais Yaakov (and family) so I cannot represent my school. I haven’t said anything to anyone. I wanted to know, what are your feelings on the topic?

October 2, 2011 4:03 am at 4:03 am #814168tickle toe eitusMemberI just googled it. I would definitely stay away from it.
October 2, 2011 4:38 am at 4:38 am #814169am yisrael chaiParticipantI was in it as were several other very frum people…wonderful experience and learned a lot
October 2, 2011 8:06 am at 8:06 am #814170aries2756ParticipantShouldn’t you be proud of what you learned? And if your teachers are suggesting it knowing who you are and who you represent, why is it bad for you? If your teachers think you should, and it is something you would like to do, then why are you trying to find a negative in it rather than the positive in it? If you were the adult and it was your child what would you advise?
October 2, 2011 12:19 pm at 12:19 pm #814171ToiParticipantnot for the right reasons. stay away.
October 2, 2011 6:23 pm at 6:23 pm #814172ItcheSrulikMemberGo. Enjoy. The more visible shomrei mitzvos there, the bigger the kiddush Hashem.
October 2, 2011 6:25 pm at 6:25 pm #814173twistedParticipantWhats Tanach? Just kidding. I was a contestant in the national 40-somthig years ago, and there were GIRLS there, but that didn’t hit my radar because there were GIRLS in school too, a school with a sort of chareidi, very very zionist administration, doing the best they could with the circumstances outside Brooklyn. Would I send my kids (more likely grandkids)? No, they are measurably more chareidi than myself, and ccnsequently, they don’t know enough to compete, and the tanach my boys do know, is because they made it a project to learn by themselves.
October 2, 2011 6:28 pm at 6:28 pm #814174ToiParticipantits not a torahdik’ contest. its purely academic; id be embarassed to go.
October 2, 2011 8:15 pm at 8:15 pm #814175ItcheSrulikMembertwisted: What do you propose to do about that?
October 2, 2011 8:42 pm at 8:42 pm #814176tickle toe eitusMemberThat’s because they focus on Gemorah more than Tanach. What’s wrong with that?
October 2, 2011 8:57 pm at 8:57 pm #814177am yisrael chaiParticipantTeach the boys Tanach! And bekiyus, meaning the names of the parshiyos in order, the dates of the yomim tovim, etc. It’s amazing what the kids are not taught nowadays.
October 2, 2011 9:26 pm at 9:26 pm #814178Queen BeeMemberFirst of all, congrats bekitzur on your eligibility and achievements. That’s impressive.
Best of luck! If you choose not to participate, just be proud of your accomplishments.
October 3, 2011 2:46 am at 2:46 am #814179bekitzurParticipantI’m receiving very conflicting opinions.
Am yisrael chai, there’s no way I could have been taught enough in school. It’s amazing what you can learn just by reading The Little Midrash Says, and similar books…
And yes, my [older] brothers know what to do if two people are holding a tallis and claiming it’s theirs, but they don’t know what Potifar’s wife’s name was, or Og’s father’s name. (Randomly.)
October 3, 2011 5:42 pm at 5:42 pm #814180am yisrael chaiParticipantbekitzur
What do YOU think about it? Would your parents support you either way?
Kol hakavod that you learn on your own, and much hatzlacha no matter what you decide.
October 3, 2011 6:00 pm at 6:00 pm #814181makMemberA brother of mine won in N.Y. many years ago and won a trip to EY to compete there. The program there was mixed and not at all the proper environment for a bas yisroel and especialy a bais yaakov girl.
October 4, 2011 2:22 am at 2:22 am #814182bekitzurParticipantHonestly? I hope they know what school I go to…
They won’t care.
October 4, 2011 2:57 am at 2:57 am #814183shlishiMembermak: If it’s a bad environment for a beis yaakov girl, it is also a bad environment for a yeshiva boy.
October 4, 2011 8:40 am at 8:40 am #814184old manParticipantDear Bekitzur,
Go for it. It will be a wonderful experience and will help you grow in every way. You will meet kids from all over the world and will appreciate that knowledge of our sifrei kodesh is the best uniter of all. Ali V’hatzlichi!
October 4, 2011 7:44 pm at 7:44 pm #814185ToiParticipantposters with first hand knowledge say that its spiritually not safe. what more is there to deliberate.
October 4, 2011 8:06 pm at 8:06 pm #814186am yisrael chaiParticipantPardon me, toi, but I am a poster with first hand knowledge and don’t recall saying such a thing.
I thought it was an absolutely wonderful experience.
The first part is taking a test in your home area- I would have to imagine most people here have done that. So why not start off here and take it one day at a time.
If your deliberation is what happens if Bekitzur wins and gets to travel to E”Y to take a test, what a gift! And spiritually uplifting! (She can go with an adult.)
Her teachers who know her are advising her to participate.
To me it’s a no-brainer.
October 4, 2011 8:15 pm at 8:15 pm #814187shlishiMemberHow does travelling with an adult alleviate a spiritually inappropriate setting?
Also, I’m not sure what teachers she is referring to (who said she is eligible not that they are advising it) since she said her beis yaakov wouldn’t allow it.
October 4, 2011 8:49 pm at 8:49 pm #814188am yisrael chaiParticipantUnless I missed, the ONE poster who participated said that her kids shouldn’t go as they didn’t learn enough to participate.
The people here who say that it’s spiritually inappropriate are the ones who weren’t in it!
How is learning spiritually inappropriate??? Or perhaps the HOLY LAND isn’t spiritual enough? Now how about LEARNING in the HOLY LAND???
That’s SOOO spiritually uplifting.
A great experience.
October 4, 2011 9:06 pm at 9:06 pm #814189shlishiMemberThe people here who say that it’s spiritually inappropriate are the ones who weren’t in it!
Uh, that’s because they were wise enough not to go. If you know it is a spiritual danger you don’t go to double-check. Nor do you need to go to Mass on Sunday to know that it is spiritually destructive.
October 4, 2011 9:10 pm at 9:10 pm #814190am yisrael chaiParticipantUh, that’s not an argument.
I went and it was SO the opposite of “spiritually destructive” and I hear no valid argument here why you claim it is…
October 4, 2011 9:15 pm at 9:15 pm #814191shlishiMemberUh, young boys and girls mixing. I would keep away with a 10-foot pole.
October 4, 2011 9:23 pm at 9:23 pm #814192am yisrael chaiParticipantUh, MIXING?? Sitting by your desk taking an exam?
Ok then, I hope you don’t EVER go on a plane for all that MIXING.
