I am considering buying a used model like 10 yrs old give or take. Any opinions on this SUV? One owner told me they pay a lot for gas ($130/week) but then again said that maybe they use it a lot for car pool etc.

That kind of makes a difference. Even the car with the best gas mileage ever made uses a lot of gas if you drive it a lot.
June 14, 2011 6:23 pm at 6:23 pm #777705real-briskerMemberWhat does carpool have to do with anything? If its a gas guzzler it doesn’t matter how much you drive, you are still getting less miles per gallon.

June 14, 2011 7:35 pm at 7:35 pm #777707nachasMemberI have a 12 year old chevy suburban and yes it eats up a lot of gas but not more than any other SUV. The tank holds about 28 gallons so if you fill up it will cost a lot for a whole tank full of gas at one time. I do a lot of carpools and in town driving not highway driving so I cant tell you how it does on the open road.
June 15, 2011 2:57 am at 2:57 am #777708chaplaintzviMemberdear heshy, as long as a certified mechanic takes a look at it(someone you trust explicitly) and you have done your homework with consumers report, and carfax, i would say go for it. I worked for my cousin in nursing homes and he got me a blazer, after that i leased a tahoe and then when i owned my restaurant i kept getting suburbans. They are great trucks. Alot of room for family and luggage on trips, the 4×8’s for building a sukkah and just about everything else. I am waiting to get my next one when i can get enough gelt. Do your homework you can’t go wrong
June 15, 2011 7:34 am at 7:34 am #777709TikkunHatzotMemberSuburbans get around 13-17mpg…that’s actually quite pathetic in terms of mileage. Many smaller cars can get 3-4 times that & the smaller car would cost a lot less in repairs, tires & everything else.
Have you ever driven a Suburban before? I had one that I borrowed in Jersey & Maryland & it was a monster to park & drive. I really didn’t like that, but some people don’t mind it…but then again, they are also the people that double-park.
June 15, 2011 2:31 pm at 2:31 pm #777710HeshyMemberTikkunHatzot,
Believe me, a smaller car isn’t an option. If it was I wouldn’t have asked about a Suburban. It needs to be at least an eight passenger automobile.
Thanks to the others.
If anyone has any other comments I am happy to hear them.
June 15, 2011 7:01 pm at 7:01 pm #777711chaplaintzviMemberheshy just a side thought. I went to new york one year and coming back to chicago i filled up in teaneck and got to chicago on a tank and a half. barely any construction and i was on cruise most of the way.
June 15, 2011 8:12 pm at 8:12 pm #777712BSDMemberHeshy,
Why not get a standard minivan. You get better miles per gallon and you have more options. If it’s a 7 seater, you can have a jumper seat installed for $750 by cso radio in Lakewood. I did it and my kids fight over the jumper seat. May you have lots of nachas from your children (and your vehicle). Get yourself a few cd players with headphones so there’s no arguing about which cd to put in. And get yourself a good pair of ear plugs-it makes for a pleasant ride.
June 16, 2011 1:43 am at 1:43 am #777713ShloimieBParticipantcomment about mileage;
Please consider how much and how you intend to drive it.
If you expect to drive very little, the calculations are not that important, you won’t consume that much gas.
