Here’s an easy way to give someone a good feeling – tell them that you appreciated or enjoyed their post, or that you see their point! As Reb Simcha Bunim Cohen says, “it doesn’t cost any money.”

The thing is, this will bump the thread, but will not add to the discussion or collection. Should this not be done for that reason? Let’s talk about that. If you’re adding content anyway, though, you can definitely show some acknowledgment too.

(As a rule, if it’s older than 6 months, let alone a year, there is virtually no circumstance that justifies bumping a thread. I’m not talking about that.)

Thank you! (Looks like it’s helping already, eh?)

I forgot – a good reason to bump an old thread is that it is a humorous/interesting collection. Newer readers may not have seen it,

and if you add content, so much the better. Basically, that type of thread cannot grow old, only die temporarily. But see my next thread!

And regarding Popa, see my next next thread! [An edit, of course.]

Kudos to cozimjewish for bumping the jewish music thread. I just spent over an hour listening to amazing songs that I would t have know we’re in existance without reading that thread.

Kudos to Randomex for starting this lovely thread.

    Oh thanx SIDI 🙂

What’s wrong with bumping old threads? Why not restart an interesting discussion that died for whatever reason? So many new threads get created on a regular basis that older ones tend to just get lost in the shuffle.

    Thank you, Crazybrit. 🙂

    1. How old is old?

    2. Why not just start a new one, and link to an older one if people want to read the opinions of the community that came before them?

What difference does it make how old it is? And I’ll turn your second question around and ask why on earth start a new thread if a relevant older thread already exists? Mods occasionally block new threads if they’re too similar to existing ones. I personally can’t stand the clutter and disorganization of multiple threads discussing the same topic, and if I’m looking for information I really don’t want to have to go jumping from thread to thread, or raise a question in one thread only to find out it’s already been answered elsewhere.

My brother once told me a nice vort (don’t know from whom). In ashrei we say “lhodia lbnei haodom gvurosov”. Pshat is that it’s referring to Hashem. But another way of translating gvurosov= HIS greatness, ie pointing out to a person his own greatness and making him feel good about himself. I liked that one!

I totally agree with jewishfeminist02 on this. And so does the YW Editor! And this whole idea of not bumping old threads goes directly against the Rules of the CR!:

[sticky] [closed] ****RULES OF THE YWN COFFEE ROOM – PLEASE READ****

    Topic and tone

4 – Before starting a new topic do

a quick check to see if the topic

    exists.

I also don’t think it’s right that one or two posters try to make up there own rules and demand others follow them.

    #1067213

    Bump.

(Note: I have revised my stance on old thread bumping.

That doesn’t include doing it for no reason whatsoever, though.)

So what was your reason for bumping this one?

    SiDi™

    #1067215

Bumping is generally either to continue a discussion or

to show threads to newer readers. In this case, it’s the latter.

Oh, I thought you just wanted to keep it safe from your own restriction on bumping threads “older than 6 months.”

As a relatively new kid on the block, I don’t mind the bumps on the road.
