May 9, 2011 1:46 am at 1:46 am #765539yeshivabochur123ParticipantSkver, I’m also a big fan of all the good stuff Lubavitch does for other Jews but the Skverer rebbe gave me an amazing bracha that changed my life forever.

And it’s amazing to see all you non- chassidim having your opinion about each Chassidus. I wonder what brings you to think so!
May 9, 2011 3:24 am at 3:24 am #765546ZeesKiteParticipantEnglishman: There’s Stolin & Satmar in England?

We even have riots.
May 9, 2011 2:26 pm at 2:26 pm #765553gavra_at_workParticipantSatmar, if only for one of the greatest Gedolim in his generation, Rav Yoel, and what he built.
May 9, 2011 3:15 pm at 3:15 pm #765554adorableParticipantI dont know the difference- all the same to me. But I think I like Babov maybe just not sure
May 9, 2011 3:42 pm at 3:42 pm #765555zahavasdadParticipantI love the name Munkacs
May 9, 2011 5:30 pm at 5:30 pm #765556bptParticipantChabad. Breslov is a close 2nd. Satmer (who does a ton of chesed) is 3rd, but I could never live with the dress code.
Bobov is next, but only because the music is top shelf (dress code still an issue though)
May 9, 2011 7:58 pm at 7:58 pm #765557adorableParticipantbpt- I remember you once mentioning that ppl told you that if you dont be careful your kids are going to end up chassidish or something like that….am i remembering correctly? so what chassidus are they going to follow?
May 9, 2011 8:10 pm at 8:10 pm #765558bptParticipantToo early to tell, as they’re not back from EY yet. Could run from total Brisk to total Toldos or anything in between.
Stay tuned!
May 9, 2011 8:12 pm at 8:12 pm #765559adorableParticipantsounds like what they said about me when i left for sem. now that I am back they say they have to see who I’m going to marry to be able to tell what I’m really all about….He can range from a lawyer to a masmid with huge peyos…LOL just joking
May 9, 2011 8:25 pm at 8:25 pm #765561JCCSGMemberBPT, i love this line: “Satmer (who does a ton of chesed) is 3rd”!!! yes! we’re proud with it!
May 9, 2011 8:33 pm at 8:33 pm #765562Feif UnParticipantbpy: Brisk is not Chassidic. R’ Chaim Volozhin was a student of the Vilna Gaon, who strongly opposed Chassidus.
I don’t have any favorite with regard to hashkaha. For music, a friend got me into the Modzitz stuff.
May 9, 2011 8:48 pm at 8:48 pm #765563bptParticipant“we’re proud with it!”
And I know without a moment’s hesitation,if I got stuck in Willy or Monroe for Shabbos, I’d be placed in a home, meals inc, regardless of how I’m dressed. And, somehow, they would find a suit and tie so I could go to shul feeling like a mentch(not sure about the donw hat, but it would’nt sureprise me if they could find that too).
But if I wanted to join full time, they would expect me (and rightfully so) to dress the part. Wife and kids too.
And that’s a bit much to undertake. Especially June – Sept.
And no, I could not join as a Tuna. If I’m in, I’m in like a brotha!
May 9, 2011 8:53 pm at 8:53 pm #765564bptParticipantI know that, Fief. What I meant was, I’m preparing myself to get them back slightly different than the way I sent them.
And believe me, either swing will be a shock to the system. Not sayin’ I against the change, just bracing for the after-effects
May 9, 2011 9:15 pm at 9:15 pm #765565ItcheSrulikMemberIzhbitz/Radzin for the sefarim. Chabad for the kiruv. Satmar for the chesed.
May 9, 2011 9:29 pm at 9:29 pm #765566OfcourseMemberUsed to be Bobov. My mother used to say that they are the most peaceful and peace-loving of all the Chassidim. They never have Machlokes.
May 9, 2011 10:12 pm at 10:12 pm #765568smartcookieMemberOfcourse- Bobov? Nebach, they used to be at peace. Sadly not anymore.
May 9, 2011 11:08 pm at 11:08 pm #765569msseekerMember“But if I wanted to join full time, they would expect me (and rightfully so) to dress the part. Wife and kids too.”
Correction: Wife and kids only. Satmar never stressed levush for men. There are Satmar chassidim with felt hats, beaver hats, tall hats, wide brims; long frocks, 3/4 length, short jackets; full beards, trimmed beards, even no beards; shtreimels, no shtreimels, etc. Satmar only stresses yiras shomayim, limud hatorah, tznius, shmiras einayim, chessed, tzedaka, emunah and anti-Zionism.
A Mizrachist who was “converted” to Satmar rov’s shita on Zionism thanks to the sefer Likutei V’Yoel Moshe, asked the distributor of the sefer what he has to do to become Satmar. His reply was: “Nothing. Just be an ehrlicher yid.”
May 10, 2011 5:20 pm at 5:20 pm #765570bptParticipantSatmar never stressed levush for men. … trimmed beards, even no beards; shtreimels, no shtreimels.
You must be talking about the post-WW2 people, who were accepted as they are (and truthfully, no one can judge them). Or gevirim / kids of gevirim who are accepted, as long as they bring their wallet.
But a newcomer today? Trying to register in yeshiva? Forget it. Unless you want to be a Tuna. Even then, I doubt they would take in the kids.
Yes, I see many trimmed beards, and many sheers (with seams, of course).
But this is not what Rabenu Yoel Ztl had in mind. Sorry, I’m too old to buy into the new crop you see walking the street that passes for a chossid.
Wanna join? Do so like you mean it!
May 10, 2011 7:06 pm at 7:06 pm #765571msseekerMemberNo, I don’t mean the silly tunas. I mean the oiberlender types. Trying to register in yeshiva a kid with a chup? Forget it takke. But if totty originally wears a bend-down and business suit, not b/c of shkutzerei, I don’t think there’d be a probem. That’s why I said “wife and *kids* only”.
May 10, 2011 7:33 pm at 7:33 pm #765572bptParticipantOberlender types? I knwow them well. If fact, VERY well. And the right yeshiva to try is <not naming names, but there are 1/2 a dozen to pick from in BP / Flatbush, both for boys and girls>
Vayoel Moshe or Bais Ruchel? or Bnei / Bnos Tzion? Or Kehillas Yaakov?
An ice cube stands a better chance on the blech.
May 10, 2011 8:31 pm at 8:31 pm #765573msseekerMemberYou’re arguing with facts. My kids in Satmar have classmates whose parents are litvish-type, BT, gerim, sefardi, teimoni… Fathers w/o shtreimels, mothers with red nail-polish… As long as the kids conform to the dress code and the parents are ehrliche yidden, nobody makes a fuss. In Bais Rochel, KJ, there was a girl from Monroe township, quite modern family but they probably prefered Satmar to public school. She learned Yiddish and was very well accepted. Her father and brothers/uncles, all clean-shaven, were even allowed to attend her graduation. And KJ is Satmar in its most narrow-minded, extreme form!
May 10, 2011 8:38 pm at 8:38 pm #765574HAKOL TOVMembersatmar wins for chessed!! no arguing that!!
May 10, 2011 8:54 pm at 8:54 pm #765575adorableParticipantbpt- cant wait to see what your kids come back like…. keep us updated
May 10, 2011 8:56 pm at 8:56 pm #765576bptParticipantI almost believed you, MS. Even up to the red nail polish, I was keeping an open mind.
But when I got to the “brothers and dad coming to graduation”, I knew you were only joking!
Another dead giveaway? KJ is from the most open minded of the Satmer clan (helps being a stones throw from Woodbury Commons!)
May 10, 2011 8:58 pm at 8:58 pm #765577WolfishMusingsParticipantWhich group of Chasiddus is your favorite, and why?
What horrible things does it say about me if I don’t have a favorite?*
The Wolf
* That’s not to say that I disapprove of chassidim. It just means I don’t favor one group over the other.
May 10, 2011 9:08 pm at 9:08 pm #765578bptParticipantOh, c’mon Wolf. There must have been one experience you had that was head and shoulders above the rest. One tish, where you really got into the zemiros, or one mitzva tanz which brought tears to your eyes.
Not to say the other are not with their merits, but surely one time that you really connected with?
May 10, 2011 9:27 pm at 9:27 pm #765580msseekerMemberbpt: I’m msseeker’s daughter. I was personally offended when you accused my mother of lying. FYI, “msseeker” is truly seeking the emes. One of my friends’ mother wears red nail polish, sleeves that barely covers her elbows, yet her daughter is a true satmar talmidah. And I’m proud to say, she is one of the frummest in our class! You can choose to believe this or not, but like my mother, I too seek the emes.
It really amused me that you think Kiryas Yoel is so open minded. I wouldn’t live there if my life depended on it. Talk about sheltered.
I personally didn’t witness the graduation, but my mother did. She was a young sheltered girl then and thought it hilarious when the girl’s male relatives kissed her.
My mother told me her name, which I can’t exactly post here, but you can verify the truth if you can get hold of anyone who graduated there in 1984.
I appreciate your appreciation of our chessed. Just think, if you would tell MO about the chessed Satmar does, they too would think you were joking.
May 10, 2011 9:29 pm at 9:29 pm #765581WolfishMusingsParticipantOh, c’mon Wolf. There must have been one experience you had that was head and shoulders above the rest. One tish, where you really got into the zemiros, or one mitzva tanz which brought tears to your eyes.
The answer to your question is no. I’ve never been to a tish or a mitzvah tantz. I sing z’miros in my home, but I assume that doesn’t count for the purposes of this discussion.
I have davened in chassidic shuls of various denominations, but none of them really impressed me over any other.
But even if the answer to your question was yes, so what? Is any branch of chassidus so shallow that it’s defined by the mitzvah tantz or tish? If I’m going to make a decision on which I feel most connected to, shouldn’t it be on the basis of something more than a tish or a mitzvah tantz? Shouldn’t it be based on their philosophy, their approach to yahadus or their feelings about what brings you closer to HKBH? Telling me that I should have a favorite chassidus simply because a chassidic zemer might have brought tears to my eyes is, IMHO, very shallow indeed.
The Wolf
May 10, 2011 9:55 pm at 9:55 pm #765582smartcookieMemberMSEEKER- sadly, the fact that parents in Satmar can dress however they wish, but the kids have to abide by exreme rules, is the reason why they have so many teenagers going off the Derech there.
BPT- as Wolf said- seeing a Tish is not a reason to have preference over a specific Chassidus. I am connected to my Chassidus because my Rav has a big influence on us, like only a Chassid can understand. Liking a Chassidus means being fully into it. Otherwise it’s not real.
See the silly reasons that posters here gave as to why they like a certain Chassidus.
I do not know how somebody that’s not Chassidish can have a preference. Besides if they had some kind of specific story that happened to them within a Chassidus.
May 10, 2011 9:59 pm at 9:59 pm #765583bygirl93Membersmartcookie- who said we are non chassidim? just because i dont live in sqver doesnt mean i or my family are not chasidim-
May 10, 2011 10:00 pm at 10:00 pm #765584bptParticipantShouldn’t it be based on their philosophy, their approach to yahadus or their feelings about what brings you closer to HKBH?
Good point, but that would mean incorporating their philosophy into your day-to-day. And in all likelyhood, your own approach is working just fine for you. As well it should.
I’m talking about the momentary effect, like going to a concert or a ball game. It doens’t make you a different person, but for the moment, you enjoy the experience.
May 10, 2011 10:05 pm at 10:05 pm #765585smartcookieMemberSorry- BYgirl- don’t be offended! Of course we have some Chassidim here, but most are not. In any case, I didn’t mean to direct my comment to anyone specifically, just to the general population here!
May 10, 2011 10:10 pm at 10:10 pm #765586msseekerMember“sadly, the fact that parents in Satmar can dress however they wish, but the kids have to abide by exreme rules, is the reason why they have so many teenagers going off the Derech there.”
Huh? More than other groups (percentage-wise)?
May 10, 2011 10:12 pm at 10:12 pm #765587deiyezoogerMemberThere is a difference between “witch chasides you belong” and “whats your favorite chasides”.
