My 16 y/o daughter has a permit. Can she drive into New York City (with me next to her, of course)? Even though, the age to drive is higher in the city? Where do I find this type of information? I can’t seem to find it on the DMV website.
trak: Is her permit a NYS permit or an out of state permit?
An out of state learner’s permit is NOT valid in New York City. In all areas of the state except New York City, Nassau or Suffolk counties, a non-resident licensee under 18 years of age may operate a vehicle from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. when accompanied by a licensed driver over 18 years of age. You may not drive in New York state if you are under 16, even if you are licensed in another state.
mewho: That isn’t exactly correct. How else does anyone living in NYC with a learner’s permit practice driving in the city? Obviously it is allowed — with various restrictions.
Driving privileges in NYC for permit holders is the same whether the NYS Learner’s Permit holder resides and received the permit from an upstate (or downstate) office of the DMV — or if they reside and received the permit in a NYC location.
