I heard a godol say that it is prohibited for a yid to publicly criticize the President (and other politicians) as this is a medina shel chesed and such criticism causes sinas yisroel (anti-semitism) and we are still in golus.
December 19, 2011 12:32 am at 12:32 am #836439Sam2ParticipantBava Basra 4a (3a?).
December 19, 2011 12:57 am at 12:57 am #836440sam4321ParticipantSam2: maybe the gemara is davka talking about a king.
December 19, 2011 1:44 am at 1:44 am #836441dash™ParticipantThe Gemorah there is talking about cursing a Jewish king and actually criticizes Herod. It seems that even to curse Herod would have been permisable but wasn’t done due to fear.
December 19, 2011 2:01 am at 2:01 am #836442Sam2ParticipantIf it was Assur I would have said it was Assur. This Gemara shows that it’s a good idea not to regardless.

Seriously, we’re Jews but we are also Americans with the same rights, protections and priviledges as any other American.

December 20, 2011 12:15 am at 12:15 am #836446lesschumrasParticipantJust because the Satmar Rebbe said LT doesn’t make it Torah law
December 20, 2011 12:40 am at 12:40 am #836447passfanMemberJust because a godol said something doesn’t make it Torah law; the godol said it because it is Torah law. (And in this case he explained it with the sources, if you listen to his full comments.)
December 20, 2011 1:35 am at 1:35 am #836448lesschumrasParticipantThe Satmar Rebe’s views are his ( especially on Israel ) but are not Torah law to non-Satmar
December 20, 2011 2:47 am at 2:47 am #836449passfanMemberThe same Torah applies to all of the klal.
December 20, 2011 3:07 am at 3:07 am #836450lesschumrasParticipantBut not his interpretation of it
December 20, 2011 3:19 am at 3:19 am #836451passfanMemberYou can interpret the Torah better than the gedolim or able to judge them?

Must I follow the Satmar Rebbe’s interpretation in everything? If my Lithuanian Rosh Yeshiva allows me to shave, does that mean I am violating the Torah since the Satmar Rebbe forbids it?
As we both know, there are seventy faces of the Torah. You and I can follow different faces, yet the same Torah.

December 20, 2011 8:22 pm at 8:22 pm #836456ED IT ORParticipantI think that just like the halocho of if one person does not want the chazan no’one is yotzei,
if one person is president and NOBODY wants him ….. (even if we are British)
but we must still respect him if we want pollard and rubashkin freed…
so yes, we must not (publicly) criticise the president (or anyone else)
