Hi,
Does anyone know of any rav who deals with the halachos of paying taxes on camps and babysitting money? I know most people don’t report it, but i wanted to know the halacha-of how much you need to make to be required to report it?

November 11, 2011 7:51 pm at 7:51 pm #826130brooklynyParticipanti asked a rav, and he told me to ask someone else. The truth is, I don’t really care about the law, I’m just nervous about halacha. I don’t want to end up in gehenum for this!

Dina demalchusa dina would be that if the person gave you a 1099 on this income, then you would be obligated to report it for tax purposes, but since they didn’t, you don’t have to make it up for the IRS. If you did, then they will want to know from whom you got the income, and it could lead to that person getting in trouble for not paying social security, etc, for the wages they paid you. Better not start with unreported income. There is a minimum amount that they have to pay you in a calendar year before there’s any obligation for them to report it to the IRS, so you’re probably in the clear if you never got any tax forms.

November 14, 2011 12:35 pm at 12:35 pm #826134NechomahParticipantI don’t think that unless it was registered as a business you need to worry. There would have to be paperwork processed and it’s obviously beyond the scope of a kid to do this. I don’t think you’re stealing from the government the taxes due on this income, but you could ask your LOR for a clear psak.

However if you make below a certain amount, you dont actually have to pay taxes.
I dont know anymore what Babysitting or camp counselors make, but its likely less than $1000. There is no income tax liability for that amount
November 14, 2011 3:44 pm at 3:44 pm #826136BTGuyParticipantI am certainly not poskinning, but any income, once it reaches a certain level, has to be part of the tax equation. I know we hold to obeying the laws of the land in regards to business/employment. Whether there are halachic consequences, I dont know. I know no one wants to pay taxes on money they earn in a somewhat informal way, but I would ask an astute rabbi as many attitudes in our community vary regarding this topic.
November 14, 2011 9:27 pm at 9:27 pm #826137brooklynyParticipantHi,
zahavasdad, it was more than 1000, and I’m just not sure who to ask. NO ONE else does it, but i know that doesnt make it correct. I want to know different rabbanim’s opinions on these things, and who to contact..
